World Championships: U18 and Women’s

https://teamusa.usahockey.com/news_article/show/1228558

US out shoots Finland 47-11 and wins 5-0. Highlight vid in the attached. Lots of up high goals. Canada was shooting high the day before in Finland but pucks just wouldn’t go in.

This kind of reminds me of the Olympics in reverse. This time it’s Canada fighting things a bit while the US is rolling. No games for US or Canada today.

A good day for the CHA commits yesterday - 2 goals for Rhea Hicks (Cuse) for Canada, and a 4 point night for Tessa Janecke (Penn State) for the US.

More of the same as last night, the US team is just playing at a different level than the others. Finland hung tough, and the final score doesn't reflect that. But US is at a different level.

IDK, getting Mankoto'ed usually isn't defined as hanging tough. The game was clearly over in the first 5 minutes.

But the last time I was in LaBahn it was WCHA playoffs vs Mankato, and both of these teams would have their hands full with that Mankato team, and then some.
I thought you played Bemidji. I remember the Bulldogs going three games with the Mavericks.

You're right. I guess I had in mind the last weekend of the regular season, and what a handful Brittyn Fleming was that weekend.

But was still only 2-0 until deep into the 3rd period.

Yes I shut it off and then woke up saw 5-0!

Perhaps this will be a fatal flaw for the Americans... dominant but letting teams hang around.

Tomorrow’s game is must watch if a person likes the rivalry. There’s no guarantee these teams Will meet in the final (and we don’t know if it will be streamed yet either).

It rained pretty much all day on their off-day today, and I had a friend in town (non hockey fan) who was stuck with what to do with a rainy afternoon. So we ended up walking around WestTown Mall for a short while, one of the two bigger malls in town. A large chunk of the Swedish team, as well as Czech coach Carla MacLeod and other staff members of the Czech team were spotted, and that was just in the one big sporting goods store (Dick's).

Here is a link to the IIHF profile on Carla MacLeod. https://www.iihf.com/en/events/2022/ww18/news/36982/full_circle I have watched her many times as an announcer, and it is awesome that she is able to use her hockey smarts to increase the competitiveness of women hockey.

I checked on ESPN+ and both games will be broadcast tonight even Sweden Finland. Whoever is responsible for getting the games on ESPN+, and the commitment from TSN to professionally cover all these.....just can’t say enough how much I appreciate it.

Above is Victory Press day 2 recap. See the bottom for various scenarios of what Canada needs to do to advance straight to semi.

I think tonight should be a great game. The Americans look great, but the pre tourney game was 3-1 including an empty net goal. Shots 30-26 in favor of USA.

US has come out strong in the first periods, but their second periods haven’t been “no mercy behind the wood shack” haha. If Canada can get a good start they’ve got a chance.

Note to Gargoyle, if Timothy A had spoken to Coach Fargo of Colgate he certainly would have thanked the Wisco faithful for the team's depth which resulted in our getting Dara G. She was a very nice surprise and a warrior around the net for Gate last year. Great to reunite her with her high school linemate, Danielle Serdachny. They have great chemistry. We're hoping this year speedy and crafty USA U-18 Elyssa Biederman among others in a very strong recruiting class can get us back into the semi's at least...Go ECAC...

Such compassion yet still speaking the truth, from Sami Jo Small on the comments made in between periods. Definitely appropriate given the ages and international experience of the players.

USA rolling 5-0 after 2.

For what it’s worth a friend connected with the Canadian team said they knew they didn’t have the best team this year. Something about trying to make the team more “representative” of the whole country, not just Ontario. Who knows. This tournament has definitely been a bit of a let down in terms of competition than previous years. But perhaps it’s better than nothing. ?
maybe since Russia was banned they should have included a team from MN (an OS team coached by Winny?) which would have put up a better game than the Canadians, no doubt.

Interesting. It’s definitely better than nothing. I’ve really enjoyed it, but that’s just me. I was wondering if Covid rules had any impact as well. Like in the 20/21 season how much was the average American player on the ice vs a Canadian player.

credit to the Americans; they are impressive and getting better each game. Even in a blowout it was fun to see their skill.

Waiting to see if USA Hockey announces that the medal games will be streamed. From Nicole’s reporting it sounds like streaming USA Hockey stuff on ESPN+ was part of the deal of ESPN getting the NHL.

I was thinking when watching the the first few games, Like Canada vs Finland, that the Minnesota girls high school hockey championship game between Minnetonka and Andover was played at a higher level then what I was seeing so you might be onto something with your comment.
