Wisconsin Women's Hockey 2025-2026

It's pretty obvious Kaehler and Roth have no idea what spearing looks like.
I wonder if it is something "by definition". Player down on the ice, puck laying on top of him/her. If you try to move the puck with your stick, it's "spearing", no matter how 'gently' you manage to do so.

But the saying in basketball when there's a bad foul call, and then the player missed the free throw: "ball don't lie".

Puck don't lie.

Since when can a ref review a play at their discretion?

I just had a look at the video, and the rule book.

After the puck goes up into the Duluth bench, causing the stoppage of play, one of the linesmen goes over to Kaehler and - I'm guessing - tells him he missed a "by definition" spear. While they're reviewing, the refs call that linesman in to look at the video with them, and then make the call. In the video close up to the boards from the opposite side of the ice, after Picard does what she does, you can see the Bulldog player kind of toss the puck off of her. Meaning she either had it in her hand or it was laying on her stomach.

Even though we've seen players poking at a puck while digging in the corner, etc. a million times, even attempting a poking motion at a player with the end of your stick is "spearing". "Spearing shall mean stabbing an opponent with the point of the stick blade while the stick is being carried with one or both hands. Spearing includes all cases in which a spearing gesture is made, regardless of whether contact occurs."

So, even if Picard is after a puck laying on the Bulldog, or even being held by her. Pico poking at it fits the definition of spearing. AND there is no such thing as a spearing minor. It can only be a major with game misconduct, or a full disqualification (ie next game suspension)

Thanks as always for your thoroughness.

But since when can a ref review a play at their own discretion? Do we really want linesmen going to refs in every single game now pointing out what they missed and then the rough reviewing what they missed and calling it? You can call that a spear by definition, but certainly that was not the intent. I've never seen spearing get called when you're attempting to play the puck. We've all seen spearing and that was not it.

Obviously I got to watch the entire game 2. UW was solid territorially and on SOG, but not a lot of great looks even strength and the PK and PP bailed them out bigtime.

UMD destroyed UW on faceoffs 56 / 44. Kraemer was unreal for UMD, she won 19/26. Hall went from being killed on faceoffs in game 1 to being the best UW player in game 2. Very fascinating. Picard only took 5 f/o and her linemate Halverson 1. Scannell took 12. Sure looks like McCarthy (2 f/o) Scannell Pieckenhagen is the 3rd line. UW had 10 players take faceoffs. That is a wildly high number. The non-centers were 0-8 (Simms, Gorbo, Edwards, Eden Halverson).

I almost decided to make the trip to St. Thomasville to see the Saturday game, but I had bought tickets on black Friday for the women's BB game Sunday to take my daughter to her first college BB game so that ended that thought.

My biggest point of interest this weekend is who is the 3rd line. I think Bucky B has access to TOI data, maybe she/he/it can tell us the info.

The 3rd line charts as
16 18 8 but that doesn’t mean anything as 24 14 2 played just as much.
I’d swap 21 for 22 on tje 2nd D pair although I think they are leary of 3 and think 22 can compensate better
for her.

Picard hard and awkwardly into the goal post, direct hit onto her right knee; maybe the knee cap, maybe a bit below. Clearly in pain, straight to the locker room, little or no weight on the knee. Could be a bad one, fingers crossed it isn't.

UW up 2-0 after one period.

Picard's line was listed as the fourth line and Scannell's as the third today on the line chart.

These Friday afternoon games are stupid! Stop treating women's hockey like it's an afterthought.

Score and sog acceptable, got killed on faceoffs, especially Scannell and Sappy. Those are all lost possessions. If Hall was an Olympian UW would be screwed. No one from the 4th line even took a faceoff. Maybe they double shifted other C's through with them once Picard was hurt?

Nice to see Venusio get a goal and McCarthy get a shorty. Not terribly excited to see it was 2 1 after 2. Gorbotenko is in a bit of a slump it appears. It will be all hands on deck in a couple weeks.
