Wisconsin Women's Hockey 2024-2025

Not only that but game one gets stuck on a Thursday night. A marquee matchup on a terrible night for attendance. We got totally shafted on this one.

I like nothing about the way this series is unfolding - Thursday Night, Cold trip to Chicago, New Years Eve weekend (sorta). But - When my 15yo son was telling me about it, he was excited - I've been to the outdoor games before - and yes it's a cool experience - maybe once - but he's never been, so he's excited about the prospect of going... so re-framing my position and attitude a bit - If it's exciting for many, and can get the game of Women's Hockey more exposure - all be it at IMO the expense of the Badgers -and to some extent the Buckeyes - then so be it. At this point I'm going to have to embrace it as a win for Women's hockey. Go Badgers!

This is a much better attitude about this outdoor game and the adjustment to the schedule. Your son has it right! Think of all the low-end teams and their annual struggles and all they and their fans have to complain about. For people here to spend so much time complaining about this outdoor game is so highly petty. Do you realize how many teams would kill for this type of an opportunity?! It's insane! All the top-end teams and their fans have absolutely nothing to complain about. Your teams are in the NCAA tournament every single year, for the most part. That's why you're teams are getting this type of a special opportunity, one that the players will never forget, yet some people on this board are shallow enough to be complaining about it. Stop overthinking this tremendous opportunity and embrace it for what it really is; a highlight in the lives of everyone involved, including the fans! Btw, it's albeit, not all be it.

Is he excited about the women's game, the men's game, or both.

When they played outdoors at Camp Randall in 2010, the women played Bemidji first, and the crowd was pretty sparse, relatively (from what I remember seeing online, I did not go). The reported crowd for the men was 55K. It was 8200 for the women, and I wonder how many of those happened to arrive before the women's game ended vs how many were there for the whole game.

We're all quite interested in a UW vs OSU women's game. I'll be interested to see how many will sign up to sit through two games outside in Chicago in January, vs how many just show up for the men's game.

I watched one outdoor game. That was more than enough. Awful sightlines. A very long way to the rink. Wind effects. It's just terrible hockey. It didn't help that it was -3 degrees that day.

This stupid gimmick needs to die a quick death.

Maybe you need a different sport to be a fan of. If you were at the Gopher game at TCF stadium, yes that was cold. Sightlines were great. Puck didn't move nicely because it was bitter cold, but the players and the fans had a great time, and it was a good game. My brother and I tried to get something to eat between the women's and the men's game. Everything in the Stadium Village area was packed, with staff frantic and waits for tables in the hour range or longer. Ended up getting a pint of Schnapps and adding that to our hot chocolate. A night of hockey we will long remember! Outdoor hockey? Bring it on!

I can see both sides on the pros and cons and the biggest complaint I hear from people I know with outdoor games is seating is too far away and poor visibility.
Either you're into the outdoor experience or you're not.
I don't go to them because since cheno several years back I can't tolerate extreme cold.

The playing surface of a football field is more than three times the ice surface of a hockey rink.

But for these games, we're not talking about a football stadium; we're talking about a baseball stadium. Unless I'm doing something wrong, fair territory of a MLB field is almost twice as big as a football field. That is, six times the size of an ice rink. The two - baseball and football - are generally 'shaped' differently, so that *might* mean some seats will be a little closer to the ice in Wrigley than in Camp Randall or TCF. But many more will be even farther away.

(Ignoring the space taken up by football sidelines and baseball foul territory.)

And ain't nobody going to be pounding on the glass of the rink...

I've been to three outdoor Wisconsin hockey games (Lambeau Field, Soldier Field, and Camp Randall) and two indoor football field hockey games (2010 Men's Frozen Four at Ford Field).

Lambeau was an amazing experience. That game and Ford Field were actually watchable in person because they wedged the rink up against one side of the field and built bleachers on the field. The action was relatively close if it felt weird with half of the stadium looming over the field bleachers.

Camp Randall and Soldier Field were awful in person. The rink was so far away as to be unwatchable and it was very cold both of those days. (With the wind at Soldier Field a lot of us abandoned our seats for the concourse for several spells.)

That said, players love these experiences since in many occasions they are literally once in a lifetime moments. They are fun as once every several years events, recruits want to be on teams that get these sorts of opportunities, and no one wants to be the program that has to tell their team that they said no to a game at Wrigley Field.

Lambeau had the best weather, 30 degrees during the day dropping to high teens by the end of the game with very little wind. I'm not planning to go, but if I look at the weather report and see a relatively mild day I might head down day of. When done well the atmosphere surrounding the game is pretty incredible.

Cold isn't the only potential weather problem. There have been outdoor games disrupted by rain, and by 'too much sun' reflecting off the ice.

Averages for Chicago in early January are highs of 33-34 and lows of 21. The record high for Jan 4th in Chicago is 64 degrees.

I've been trading emails with the WH reps in the athletic department today. A couple things:

- they said that the $120 price as was quoted last month was $8 per game times 15 games; that the $120 never did include two Ohio State games.

- I pointed out that if that was the calculation back in July, then they knew back in July there would only be one Ohio State game included; they just didn't bother to tell us that. One might think that was a deceptive business practice.

- and if this year's $120 was based on $8 per game, then the price increase this year was not $90 up to $120, a 33% increase; rather it was $5 per game last year up to $8 per game this year. That's a SIXTY percent increase.

Keep fighting the good fight Robert. I've been pressing TDM to talk to Mark Johnson about how we got shafted with this Ohio State deal too. Of course we all know Mark Johnson won't say anything that's not whatever critical. Probably could go up the ladder to Jason King as well.

You're kidding, right? You can't be seriously upset over a three dollar a game ticket increase. Ohio State had a three dollar increase this season too and it's still a bargain for the best hockey in town!

Do they not teach the concept of percentages at Ohio State?
