Wisconsin Women's Hockey 2023-2024

If you're referring to Curl's penalty with two minutes to go I agree. I just couldn't believe the captain would do something to hamstring any advantage Wisconsin could have had to tie the game.

I find myself very annoyed this morning about the turnovers and that stupid play. The turnover thing is troublesome because we had a few of those gifty plays to Minnesota last weekend but they did not capitalize. Obviously TOSU did on some really nice shots. I mean Wisconsin plays lights out for long stretches of time and then a stupid decision. Very irritating. It was really amazing how this was a possession game last night. It wasn't really about transition it was about not being able to get the puck from the opposing team. And when you're chasing versus having you're burning more energy and you can't change on your own terms, which I think made Wisconsin tired in that third period as it went on. Losing honestly doesn't bother me when you Play really really well and you just get beat, that's life. When you get beat because of your own decisions, that's hard to swallow. I will admit it is therapeutic typing these words this morning.

On Brita's stupid play, she had just blown a golden opportunity to score previous to that and she was looking tired out there. When I saw her heading toward that player I was like uh oh and then wham she did it. What is ironic is the fact that Murphy did that last week and now Curl it this week.

On the play that MJ challenged for contacting the head, certainly there was a penalty there. Roughing interference whatever.

With the game starting later tonight, I wonder if the wrestlers will have the whole lot 91 filled when we get there.

Timothy, I have a parking pass to lot 46 (corner of Johnson and Lake) that you can have in addition to 2 free tickets since I can’t make game.

if interested message me and I could transfer through Badger app

On the head contact challenge: unless the stick got up into Murphy's chin or neck, I really don't agree. It was just after a face-off, a 50/50 puck that the OSU player had actually gotten to and taken possession of. So one could even make an argument for a penalty on Murphy at that point. Again, unless the OSU player's stick got too high. That I couldn't tell reliably from the BTN replay. Live I thought no call was correct, and same after watching replays when I got home.

Glad Murphy was none the worse for the hit. But boy, was MJ hot about it! :-)

It did not look like a clear-cut contact to the head call.

Kotlowski has got her Masters degree so she's done unless she wants to do a double Masters. If I recall correctly OB and Wheeler did not have their Masters.

Got into lot 91. The sold out sign was out but there was spots open and he let us in because I had the parking pass.

Let's go RED!!!

That was better.....

Timothy, great bounce-back win for your team tonight, congrats on that. I want to know who Mark Johnson goes with in net for the postseason? I know, "You'll never tell." If I understand correctly, most of you feel that Gervais is the better tender, but dang, I think McNaughton has had better success when it comes to the games against us. We had to go into OT to beat McNaughton in Columbus and she beat us tonight. I actually think this loss tonight will help us, provided we learn our lessons from it. I really wanted to see us win tonight, but I think it's a tad unrealistic to expect to sweep a great team like Wisconsin in LaBahn.

I'd go with Ava in the NCAA's. I have said that earlier this season I felt like she was a little more steady, but then Jane made some mind-blowing saves over the second part of this season which you will need in the playoffs, however Ava seems to avoid getting in a spot where she needs to make that kind of a save, though she has herself too. I would feel bad for Jane, she's a quality player and a essential to success.

Interestingly, possession seemed to be the key to success, but in reality for Wisconsin it was scoring in transition where everything happened last night. Every goal was a transition goal for Wisconsin.

In the second period Kotlowski was getting the spot that Murphy was in. I wonder if Murphy was injured or if that was just a shake up to get a better overall performance out of the d core. She made an essential play that sprung OB on the first goal.

MJ was also doing mad scientist changes on the forwards as well. Hall was playing wing on the third line, Wheeler was playing center, Eden and Simms flipped spots, Gorbo was seeming to get more playing time than Woz. Pretty amazing that against the toughest opponent on the planet these changes on the fly worked.

After a lackluster 1st period the Badgers played much better in periods 2 and 3. With the victory tonight UW locked up an NCAA top 4 seed

While I think both goalies will split time next weekend, I would like to see McNaughton be the #1 goalie at the WCHA championship and NCAA tournament

I also noticed Murphy was not out there much if at all on Saturday. The concerning thing is that I didn't see her post-game on the ice during the celebration. Could have missed her, but that might lean more toward injury than performance. The Badgers won 2 nattys with Kotlowski on D so it is nice to have such an experienced player step in for Murphy.

I realize that this is a question that doesn't have a single correct answer, but who do Wisconsin fans think is the one forward on your team that you could least do without? I was thinking it was Sims, but last night reminded me just how vital O'Brien is to your success. I'm sure that Eden, Curl, and L. Edwards also have their admirers. If you're picking teams for one game, who is your first choice up front?

Great question. I would go with Curl. The captain brings a physicality to the team that no one else does and can obviously score. She is a 2 time captain for a reason, and brings intangibles that can't always be measured.

While Gorbatenko has a better win percentage (which bodes well for the future), and Pickard has a slightly better win percentage - both on many fewer draws - O'Brien has easily the best faceoff win percentage for a team's 'main' center in the WCHA. MJ never does much line matching that I notice, but when I do notice, it's to get O'B out for the faceoff.

Thinking about the Pairwise and UW's position in it (of course), I think I have this right, and it's good news:

Ohio State is going to be the #1. Wisconsin is currently #2, ahead of Clarkson, Colgate, and Minnesota. So, how far, if at all, might UW fall? If we assume they manage to not lose either game to St Thomas...

... the worst that could happen is a loss to Minnesota in the WCHA semis, and then wait for 'selection Sunday'. To fall as far as 4th, two of those three teams would have to pass them. But Clarkson and Colgate are both ECAC teams, so at least one of them is going to be handed one more loss in their tournament. The Pairwise comparisons with those teams will depend entirely on NPI. And on NPI, I'm pretty sure both cannot catch UW; one maybe, but not both, because of that pending loss.

Can Minnesota catch them? Here's the 'news': Even if Minnesota beats UW in the WCHA semis, I don't think that will mean Minnesota can win the Pairwise comparison with UW.

Right now, UW leads in NPI. Assume that a loss would mean Minnesota's NPI passes UW's (it would if Minn goes on to beat Ohio St, and probably would not if Minn loses to Ohio St in the finals). Wisconsin would still lead 3-2 on head-to-head; 3-2 lead head-to-head plus Minn "plus 1" for NPI means they're tied at 3-to-3, and the comparison gets decided on 'common opponents'. And - if I'm properly assigning the 'right' numbers for OT wins and ties - Wisconsin wins 'common opponent' percentages, even if Minnesota wins the WCHA tournament. Meaning Wisconsin wins the Pairwise comparison and stays ahead of Minnesota.

It is more likely that not that Wisconsin has clinched #2, but I think a certainty that they clinched at least #3.

We'll know more later when Grant's app goes live.

Great analysis. Being #2 could be pretty important because it appears there is a separation in qualify of teams beyond the top 6. Being a #3 seed could bring the Gophers into play for a berth to the Frozen Four. You certainly don't want to be #4 and potentially see OSU in the Frozen Four semi's assuming you get there.
