Wisconsin Women's Hockey 2021-2022

Watts? I think they both were in the morning coffee run picture tweet, so they are in town and have no slings or crutches. Good signs that way.

Let's GO RED!

They're not on the posted line chart, and the UMD TV announcer said 'only three lines'. So I don't know what the deal is.

Webster with a PP goal, and then she missed a 3/4th open net on a backhand a minute later, up over the crossbar. Otherwise pretty even play.

Scramble in front of the net, Wheeler able to poke it in. 2-0, both Wheeler (and could have had a third, as I said).

EDIT: sorry I mixed up my Wheler with my Webster. One for each.

But now Webster does get her second. 20 seconds into a five-minute PP - contact to head on UMD defender Flaherty. End of two periods, 3-0 UW, with about 4:30 left of the PP.

3-0 final. Shutting out Lindenwood and Merrimack is one thing, shutting out UMD much better. Blair and D were really good today.

Per Todd Milewski of the State Journal: Posick has an upper body injury while Picard and Nealey have lower body injuries. Don't say anything about severity

Crap. All three were "noticeable" in a good way on the ice last weekend vs St Cloud. That must have been a rough week of practice!

Well TimothyA, it's OSU/Wisconsin week and I was wondering if you've started having palpitations yet from your usual dread and fear of Coach Muzzy? (Big Grin, Wink)

No, not yet, (I will be though). I'm still trying to digest how UW had only 1 SOG in the first period and how they allowed 4 goals in the game. There is a lot to come to grips with after a solid Friday win. In listening to UMD's weekly presser, their coach said their plan was to get the puck behind the D and make them turn their backs, then get the puck from them and posses the puck, which seemed like a well executed plan. They said they were undone in the second period by sloppy play in the N zone and that let UW back in the game. It will be interesting to see if other teams try that tact. I think if you are going to try that you need some speedy and tenacious F's. Not everyone has those. Obviously UW adjusted, won the 2nd period, tied the 3rd and won the OT, so it was a great gritty win for UW. They took a punch to the face, got knocked down, then got up and duked it out. An excellent win.

It was really great to see all 3 lines scoring. That is excellent. Woz is having a great Fr. year, she is adjusting well. Wheeler is continuing come on as well. Both are registered snipers.

These injuries are a little troublesome with Picard and Posick. I wish TDM would ask MJ who the emergency F is if another goes down.

Well TimothyA, as usual I will not be making predictions on this weekend, Wisconsin and OSU are so evenly matched. I think the deciding factors will be the usual ones, who's hungrier for it, how our respective coaches will try to counter each other, ability to capitalize on opportunities and good old puck luck! I am quite envious that you'll no doubt be present at the games this weekend while I'm relegated to the TV.

Yes I shall be at the games watching the OSU bench with fear and trepidation, but lucky for you they are on tv! Years ago that was not the case.

I think I'm lucky in several ways, first that I can see away games on BTN instead of that horrible Flohockey. And mostly that Coach Nadine has done such a remarkable job building and elevating our program to where we can proudly compete with the traditional powers of women's college hockey such as yours.

So I found the UW lowlights via the UMD twitter feed.

Goal 1 UW was chasing the forechecking UMD around the net and they left Klein all alone under the circle and she ripped it off the pass. Bad D zone awareness on that one. O'B line victimized on that.
Goal 2 UW left Klein alone on the backside in transition and she shot off the pass again and the shot just snuck under Blair who did get post to post in great position to stop it in the butterfly. JUST under her. There were probably skidmarks on her pad from that one. All 5 BADgers were on the same side of the ice on that one. No one honored their backside responsibilities (If UW plays like that). O'B line also victimized on that one too.
Goal 3 2 on 2 in transition Helgeson was covering one and she got outside of her, then Helgeson turned towards that player and the puck got there with her back to it and they got another under circle rip. Toft allowed the cross ice pass, woulda been nice to get the stick in the way of the pass, but it was a reach. Woz was backchecking but didn't really do much to be impactful though she could have. 2 Fr got victimized on that. They will learn from that.
Goal 4 ppg, shot from the high slot off center a bit, I think Blair was screened.

My takeaway. Don't screw up!

This game could not have come at a better time with OSU coming to town. If they screw up like that against OSU it will end in similar outcomes as far as the puck being in the net. It will be fresh in their minds and they will learn from it and be better focused.

Pankowski is doing the color commentary for Sunday's game on the BTN, how cool is that? It will be interesting to see how she does.

I'm really feeling confident that UW will play 2 complete games after the UMD game 2 gut check. That was the perfect primer for the OSU series.

I hope Nealy is ready to go, they will need their most experienced D to log a lot of icetime this weekend.
