Wisconsin Women's Hockey 2021-2022

There's a very good chance that today will be the final game at LaBahn for this year's class of 'super seniors'. So with that in mind, they managed to:

- win three WCHA regular season titles in five years
- win two WCHA tournament championships in four tries (with hopes of one more yet to come)
- win two national championships in three tries (with hops of one more yet to come)

Pretty darn good. Thanks and congratulations.

They have accomplished much more than other classes have, yes thanks for all the hardware and adding to the Wisconsin hockey legacy. On Wisconsin!

I am fully responsible for the offensive firepower yesterday. Besides putting my pants on with the left leg going on first, wearing white socks instead of black and not wearing my lucky underwear (just a new pair), my wife came along! (Just changing hats yesterday did not do the trick so I went all out). I told her she's stuck going to the ncaa game if there is one in Madison. She was not entirely onboard with that idea.

Great to see some nice goals on backdoor feeds for once. Edwards with a great pass and OB with a great/kinda lucky pass.
Great to see LaMantia with a laser on the PP. She's the most talented goal scoring defenseman since? She has really developed as a player. Dilks mentioned her as a possible Olympian in the next go around. A solid defender with a great shot. She'd give Boob Boom a run for her money on the hard accurate slap shot front.
Great to see Wattage with a low angle sniper shot in traffic and a goal in the first minute of the game just taking the puck to the net.
Hey Maddy Posick in front of the net creating havoc on the PP! How cool was that to see.

I cannot wait for Jungels and Harvey to replace the 5th and 6th D. I'm sure they are doing their best, but there's a reason Posick was getting some of their minutes at D. I'll just leave it at that.

Wheeler coming of an injury seemed to be in the middle of a lot of physical play this weekend. She's a bit of a poke the bear kind of player. That being said, she did not deserve to get hacked like she did. Beebe needs to be suspended next season for the tomahawk chop on Wheeler's neck as she was getting up. Watts a dirty, terrible thing to do.

I saw a bit of an interview this week with an NCAA basketball coach, and the interviewer started to say something about the coach's superstitions, and the coach corrected him by saying "not superstitions, rituals". :-)

IIRC, that amazing glove save that Dowhy made Friday night was on a one-timer from Posick. Overall, probably the best weekend of her career.

Part of the overall shame of Beebe's penalty is that she's been a really good player for a long time; she's a super-senior. That was her final game, there's nothing to suspend her from. A really bad way to end a good career.

I feel awful for Beebe if that’s the case.. it was more foolish, than dangerous... but it had to be called... nonetheless ... no way to end 5 years of blood, sweat and tears...

My comments on this weekend’s games.

I was disappointed that Kronish did not get a start this weekend - after last weekend, she deserved at least one. I thought Blair looked a bit shaky, especially when she got trapped in scrums behind the goal trying to play the puck, leaving the net wide open had a Beaver broken free which one almost did on Friday. I would have hoped the coaches had put this on her NEVER DO list since she got caught in a similar situation that resulted in the game winning goal by MN in their first game here. When there are opposing players in your D zone, stay in net.

The offense generated sustained pressure throughout both games. The scores of both could have been blowouts. That they weren’t was attributable in part their goalie being in good form, but also to the fact that the Badgers narrowly missed numerous rebound chances and passes in close. If Bucky can manage to connect on similar chances next weekend, they may come away with what now appears as unlikely wins.

Posick was a pleasant surprise on offense as well. She was aggressive and spent lots of time with several Beavers embedded on the crease offering screens and options to play rebound pinball for deflections. The Badgers as a whole should join her in this behavior. She also got back several times to make key defensive plays. She has developed into a solid contributor over the past few weeks.

Finally, it seems my understanding of the hand pass rules apparently needs revision. Everything I have read says they are legal by tossing the puck or sliding it on the ice - but only in your own D zone, nowhere outside it. The reactions of a number of players to the officials disallowing them multiple times suggests they may have had the same understanding. I know they had been illegal throughout hockey until relatively recently when the NHL changed its rules to allow them. But I thought the college rules had been changed to match the NHL’s. I thought the refs failed to enforce other rules fairly often, so why not this one. But were they right about this?

From the NCAA Rulebook:

84 - Hand Pass
84.1Hand Pass- A player shall be permitted to stop or bat a puck in the air
with the open hand, or push it along the ice with the hand, and a teammate
may take control of the puck, unless each of the items below have occurred:
1.The puck was deliberately directed (not deflected) to a teammate;
2.This action allowed the offending team to gain an advantage; and
3.A teammate gains possession and control of the puck, either directly or
when deflected off of any player or official.
84.2Defensive Zone- It is not legal to hand pass the puck in any zone. If the
hand pass is initiated in the defensive zone, a change of players shall not be
permitted by the offending team.
84.3Faceoff Location- When a hand pass violation occurs, the ensuing faceoff
shall take place at the nearest faceoff spot one zone closer to the offending
team’s defensive zone from the point of the violation, unless otherwise
covered in the rules.

Predicting the future.....Looks like if UW wins the WCHA they can control their own destiny to be the 4 seed, if not, 5, 6 or 7. If Yale makes the ezac finals, UW is locked out of the top 4 if they beat OSU and lose to UM. If they lose to UM and Q wins the ezac, then they can still be the 4.

If UW wants any chance of being the 4 seed and getting a home ncaa game, they must beat OSU from Watts I have played in in the tourney calculator.

And they *cannot* have what has become their typical slow (very slow) start to the first game of the weekend. The last five Fridays, they have fallen behind; three of them on the opponents' first SOG, and once on the second SOG.

(Maybe they can schedule a scrimmage with St Thomas for Friday night?)

Just got an email for season ticket-holders to request tickets for NCAA quarterfinal game.

Clearly, they know something we don't.

:-)

I wouldn't schedule Mankato!

Both the UW semi-final and the final this weekend will be televised on some channel called "TVW", over-the-air digital channel 3.2. I don't know where that is on cable or Dish, etc.

With Princeton knocking out Hawvard of the ezac, UW's path to the 4 seed if they beat OSU and lose to UM is still Yale has to lose to Princeton in the semi's and Q has to with the tournament.

If UW wins the WCHA and NE loses in the hockey eazy finals and Vermont wins the whole thing, UW can jump to 3.

Having Wheeler back is huge. She could be the key to UW being able to win as she gives them a fully viable 2nd line. OSU has the last change, which is a big plus for them. I'd love to see a minutes chart after this game to see how much the 3rd line and the 3rd D pair actually play.

It's fairly safe to now say that isn't happening. Although the same scenario could happen with UConn instead of Vermont, so the UVM thing was kind of a decoy. It's kind of hard to have it both ways, where you're winning the WCHA Championship in this thread, but lamenting the fact that you have little chance against Muzzy in another.

More than getting to a certain seed, I think the key is to get an advantageous bracket. For example, if UW was #5 while Yale wins the ECAC and is #4, that's a pretty decent bracket for the Badgers. Yes, it would be a road game, but against a team that's never played an NCAA Tournament game. I don't see you losing to Yale. IMO, it would be a slightly tougher road game if Quinnipiac wins the ECAC, because the Bobcats have made the tourney (so long ago that the roster has turned over), but more importantly, they've already played UW on the road. If they get you in their barn, they know what to expect.

#6 might not be awful, because UW can have their regular 'slow Friday start' against Syracuse and come back to win (famous last words), then be ready for #3 Northeastern, or whoever on Saturday.

To me, that #6 seed seems noticeably tougher than #5. First, nobody loses to "Bye." Even when you do advance out of the opening round, now you're playing a team that is more rested if the quarterfinal game should go beyond 60 minutes. More than anything, there is a big difference in playing a quarter against a team that took you to OT in the final a year ago and one that is making its debut in the tourney. You can make the FF in either scenario, but what are the odds in each path? If you say you're a 95% favorite against Syracuse, that still means you go out in the first round 5% of the time. I'd give you a 75% chance of winning at Yale; would your odds be any better than 67% at Northeastern (and I think I'm being generous here)? To get to the FF, that would just be .95 * .67 or 63%. That yields 12% of the time you advance out of the #5 seed when you wouldn't out of the #6 seed (Disclaimer: this is not a scientific survey.)
