Wisconsin Women's Hockey 2021-2022

Interestingly MJ made no players available for the media yesterday. This is getting serious.

Blair is getting better, but that's all he said. Woz and Wheeler are questionable.

After seeing Kronish, i’m not sure Blair coming back and playing would be the best thing for WI.

Reminder for Tim and others: this weekend is high school boys wrestling tournament at the KC, so parking will be tight, and more expensive. Lot 91 is available for hockey, but whether they'll be any open spaces... same options otherwise - city lots, etc.

Excellent heads up. I had no idea. I'll have to bring cash too. Thanks a ton.

On Wisconsin!!!!

Are you just screwing with us or is she for real?
I know nothing about Kronish except what I saw when I watched the two games against OSU. An extremely small sample size, yes, but she looked really good for the 4 periods she played against a very aggressive opponent.

A great first period ruined by a bad transition d goal. Edwards got beat at the redline, then no forward picked up/caught the backside f and in it went.

Overall great pace by uw and tons of chances blocked or missed the net.

Kronish makes that save. (Winking emoji)

Webster was late recognizing that she needed to rotate back.

Dowhy had at least two facemask 'saves' that I saw, but the second Badger goal kind of makes up for that.

From my low seats a saw Edward's oops it right in front of me but I didn't see how the forwards didn't react. I was surprised to see the d pinching so much in the 3rd period.

She had that crazy great glove save too.

Ss was the best player on the ice for UW. When the hockey gods finally smile on her she's gonna explode with goals. Hopefully it's this season yet.

Wow was MJ po'ed at the end of the game with the officials. At the end of the game he was chewing them out, shook hands with the bsu coaches and left the ice, did not shake hands with the bsu players. They could have called a few on bsu but I thought the watts penalty was legit. I think he was mad about where some faceoffs occurred at the end of the game as well.

There were four BSU fans sitting right in front of me, with two of them wearing legit Dowhy jerseys, so clearly relatives; mother, aunt, etc. Obviously, they were cheering her all night, but really went crazy on that save. A couple Badger fans, including me, gave them a 'thumbs up', etc. after it. I leaned over and said 'now that was impressive'.

There was a faceoff near the end, during the 6-on-5 extra attacker, that got moved into the UW D-zone from center ice after the refs had a conference about it. Don't know what that was about, but I mean to go look at the BTN video to see.

Yes, the Watts penalty was legit. And maybe cumulative. Lately she seems to have gotten fed up with constantly being hacked and hooked and slashed and not getting calls, and she's pushing back. There were others just as legit that should have been called, though. SS got lit up just out from the crease right after getting off a shot. I guess maybe the refs' justification would have been 'well, she got the shot off', but if there's a rebound, she's flat on her back when it comes.

'Bad start Friday night' is over. Saturday will be better.

Adding: the late faceoff, 59 seconds to play, the puck got jammed into the opening between the boot and the blade of a Bemidji skater a few feet inside the Wisconsin D zone. So I guess because the stoppage happened in the zone and wasn't the 'fault' of anything Bemidji did, the faceoff was correctly in the Wisconsin D zone?

MJ was not happy, though. (I have thought this, half-joking and half-serious, at volleyball a couple time watching the team huddled up during a timeout, etc: I should learn to read lips, so I can tell what they're saying. Then I could know what MJ was saying to the refs. :-o )

Solving the parking quandary way easy. Usually the lot off Regent St (I call it the Panera Bread or the Train Track Lot) is a pay parking lot for big events like men's hockey or the wrestling tournament. If you get there early, you can park down by the newish hotel and the walk is doable. I showed up and there was no one to take my money so we just drove in and parked right where I wanted to. I am shocked they weren't taking money last night. Watts is really irritating is in the old days you could always park there for free, then a few years ago, prior to the hotel, they started charging for women's hockey and then that is when I switched to lot 91. One time I showed up with the boat hooked up to the truck as we went fishing before the game and the attendant wanted to charge me double. I would understand if the lot was going to be packed full, but it never was for women's hockey, so Watts the big deal? He relented.

I'm not sure what the rule is supposed to be there. I've seen it where a shot winds up going inside the breezers or jersey of an attacking player and causing a whistle, and the faceoff comes outside the zone. Is this different because the referee didn't lose sight of the puck, and is more like when two players facemasks get locked together? I don't know. The UW student announcers were no help. The color guy was babbling about the play must have been ruled offsides (the puck was nowhere near the blue line) and they must have changed their minds and ruled it shouldn't have been a whistle; so the faceoff should have been on the center-ice dot. My guess is that Johnson was correct and the faceoff should have come outside the zone, but I don't know this for a fact. It wasn't BSU's "fault" that the puck got lodged, but it also doesn't seem right to penalize UW with an in-zone draw.

To be fair to the announcers, it all happened along the 'near' boards where (and you might know better than the rest of us) what they can see from their position is going to be blocked by the boards, etc. I have no idea of they have monitors so as to be able to see what the stream showed from that 'end zone' camera that showed where the puck had gone.

Not sure about the monitors, because I haven't been in the LaBahn pressbox since ~ 2014, so they could have added monitors after that. Your point is good that they likely didn't know about the trapped puck, but you can follow the play well enough to know that it wasn't a question of being offside. I'm probably just cranky and at that point of the season where I wish they would mute all student announcers and just give us a hot mic for game sounds and the PA.

It might take some work, but there will be a radio broadcast of the UW game today available on iHeart radio, with the UW goalie coach as the 'analyst'. You could try to sync that up with the BTN video stream.

Thanks. I have heard the radio voices, and it is a much more professional production. There's a lot of hockey today, with both the college games and the finals in both classes of the Minnesota girls HS, so I'll likely get my fill without needing to be too creative in splicing broadcasts together. Yesterday was BSU's best shot. Today, if I want to see Goliath beating up on David, I can just turn on CNN and watch Russia bully Ukraine.
