Exactly. They've decided how things are going to work and there's nothing anyone can do about it.

Amazing how we're on the same page on this, while diametrically opposed on so many other things. Maybe we should run for office on the same ticket, with the sole goal of fixing the fiscal mess!

I'm more gen x than boomer and do see the financial hole we're in. But I see much of the US position vis a vis the world as driven by progress by developing countries and not deterioration of the US.

Excepting some bad decisions during the last decade, I also get the contributions to society, cuture and technology from 1965 on...which were probably the greatest this country has yet seen.

So no, I don't see the boomers as 'all bad'.

Most of us, Scooby aside, aren't saying they're all bad. Just that the fiscal cliff they are driving us off of makes it harder to appreciate the positive things they've done.

Maybe the boomers can be thought of in terms of the british empire. They succeeded far beyond anyones wildest dream in terms of creating a super model for America. But eventually they became self indulgent and negligent and caused significant damage on their way out. The british will have a great legacy...but have also had significant pain on the backside.

Maybe the boomers can be thought of in terms of the british empire. They succeeded far beyond anyones wildest dream in terms of creating a super model for America. I get the feeling most if not all of the people defending the Boomers are Boomers themselves.

I'm a borderline* Boomer and I can't stand them.

But I'm a borderline New Yorker and I can't stand them, either.

Looking for an event where "thing changed" in the public mind that's also pretty near the typical date. Hiroshima and the JFK Assassination both changed the American mindset, in the way that 9/11 and the Great Depression did. The idea is if you spend your whole life soaking up everybody's reaction to that you become a "child of the event."

I know but there is a big difference between an age of technology and generations. But then again it's just a date any way, everyone understands that most of these are what? +/- 5 years?

One of the more interesting things I rember my mom telling me about was at work one day in the 90s my mom was having a conversation with coworkers about where they were when the challenger shuttle blew up. She asked everyone where they were when Kennedy was shot. That's a great way to age yourself...I think she was the only one who remembers it.

Yes, agreed.

I like your "where were you" question; something like "what was the first significant event you can remember understanding?" Mine is Watergate. I have been told I watched the moon landing live but I was a little too young to "get" it.

there is no denying the fact that Kennedy's assassination had a huge impact on America, I'm just confused about how that day can be the cutoff of a generation. I understand the reasoning why but as I said before generations are about experiences, kids who were 3 yo that day probably have the same experience of it as anyone born in the next few years.

But what about their parents? If their attitude(s) changed, then how they raised their child(ren) may have changed in the process.

JFK's assassination was a big deal, but it was also exaggerated because it was the first really important moment for the Boomers. By the Boomers' Self-centeredness Principle: x matters to me, I am the most important person in the universe, therefore x is the most important thing in the universe. See also the Beatles.
