Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXX: 1 All American at a Time
I can't say for certain one way or another how hard UW even tried to go after Auston Matthews. At the end of the day it all comes down to scholarship availability. What I do know is they graduate 3 forwards and already had four pretty darn good forwards lined up with Seamus Malone, Luke Kunin, Brock Boeser and Matthew Freytag. That's at minimum three full rides and probably another half. Maybe if they could have landed him they they push Freytag back another year. That said, how much time do you want to put in recruiting a kid that's going to be on campus for one season who just as easily could end up picking any of the other elite schools already mentioned? So, I'm not sure it would have mattered even if Don tried pushing him towards UW. I never really heard UW as a player for him anywhere along the line.
I agree with your position here. One would think Don Granato's resume would get Matthew's to look at UW...Of course Don couldn't come out and advocate for UW I don't think w/out risking being fired...
that said...I wonder if Don would consider coming Madison to coach? I think he'd be a kick *** replacement for Eaves.
