Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

Re: Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

Baggott scooped Chuck, but he is retired I guess....

"UW men's hockey coach Mike Eaves filled the two holes on his staff Friday, naming Bill Butters and Gary Shuchuk as his assistant coaches.

Butters, 59, is a former Western Collegiate Hockey Association defenseman at Minnesota (1971-73) who played 72 games in the NHL. He previously worked as an assistant coach with the Gophers under former coach Doug Woog.

Shuchuk, 43, played for UW (1986-90) and was a All-American center for the Badgers when they won the NCAA title in '90."

Well, I'm a bit underwhelmed. On the surface he hired a washed up rodent coach and a rookie Badger. The details will emerge as we I guess.

Wisconsin Hockey: In Eaves We Trust

I'll take it as a compliment that you are saying the local beat writer who is with the team virtually every day of the season is scooping a blogger who usually only can see the Badgers on the road or on TV. :p

Article from the uw site. Was wondering the connection with Butters and see it goes back quite a way with Eaves with the North Stars.

אױ װײ  (Oy Vey)

59 years old, other than running Christian hockey camps, what's he been doing since 1995? I'm baffled by this decision and not real happy.

Does anybody remember him playing? The crowd & band used to go back & forth yelling, "Parkay" ......."Butters" referring to a Parkay margarine commercial that put a stick of butter, or Deacon, against Parkay that "tasted" like butter.

Is there a chance Butters is simply a temporary "fix"? Maybe Eaves couldn't get a guy he really wanted right now, so he hired Butters to fill the spot for a year?

I just edited my post. I totally forgot about Butters. "Stotch"; I believe that is Slovak. Can he tend goal?

He grew up the oldest of five brothers.

Three of them have since died — one run down by a drunk driver at age 7, another killed in a car accident and a third on a snowmobile. The fourth is in prison serving a felony drug conviction.

His mother was divorced for the first of six times when Bill was 4, and his family lived in a couple dozen different homes when he was growing up in greater St. Paul.

Yikes. The guy ought to be able to teach the kids something about life anyways.

Re: Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

Schu will be good to see as an up-and-coming coach. He's done well with TW and it'll be nice to see how that translates at the college level.

Butters... now that's a shock. Did anyone see that coming? He has creds in the WCHA and as a defensive coach (albeit: a long time ago with a school not exactly known for defensive prowess). I have to echo some of the worries that others have expressed here, but we really have no choice but to give him a chance to show what he can do.

Wisconsin Hockey: Huh.

Re: Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

It's currently 4:40. I'm listening to WTSO (1070) in Madison, where Eaves is supposed to be live on-air in a few moments. Tune in or stream if you can.

As expected, nothing said AT ALL about Butters. Eaves spoke about Shuchuk for a minute (said nothing we didn't know) when his cell stayed connected. I was very disappointed in the interview as well as the Butters selection.

Whatever.

Sounds like they will be a couple of good additions to the coaching staff. Shuchuk ran one of the ice rinks (Madison Ice Arena and Harmeyer) that I skate at all the time during the summer months. Thats funny.

Re: Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

Looks like the Badgers have an interesting schedule for the '10-'11 season. Im thankful for having season tickets, because if I could only attend a few games this season it would be difficult to decide which ones Id want to see.
Im looking foreward to the series with the rodents in February. More than anything, Im just looking foreward to the season starting again. Drop the puck!!!

Re: Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

well I'm not sure about Butters for this moment in time for UW but he was on the rat staff from 85 - 95 I think which was a **** fine period of recruiting for them. If he can help UW land some blue-chip Minnesota kids that would be awesome.

I really like Schuchuk as a hire. He might be green compared to a few others that were mentioned...but I like the 90 connection again, and he can probably help in Western Canada.

calling SASKATOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!

Re: Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

I remember going to games where Butters was playing against the Badgers, and the man was hated big time. Over roughly 40 years of Badger games, I can only recall a handful of opposing players that the crowd really hated, and Butters was one of them. Very interesting hire.

Re: Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

I couldn't find this anywhere, but was there any news about what happened to Stepan during the championship game? That was a nasty spill he took and hopefully it wasn't a major injury...

Ah, concussion and separated shoulder I think. He'll be fine.

I was listening to Posic on an interview and he said Butters a "goon" and that the fans really hated him.

Sounds like Eaves and Butters go way back, so I think this was a comfort hire for Eaves, someone who shares similar viewpoints with him.

I'm concerned neither is a bonefied recruiter, but Butters is obviously a guy who doesn't mind travelling, in looking at his current job. And, in the end, Eaves is the main recruiter.
