Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

Re: Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

eff yeah! that's great news!

The responsiblities of a D-1 coach are a lot different than coaching peewee and bantam hockey(Byce's highest level of coaching thus far) I love what Byce has done, but I would want a guy with a little more experience.

Bumped into Matt Murray the other day. I guess there's a lot of rumblings around the Blue Line Club on why they are primarily looking for UW-alumni in their coaching search. They feel that the best possible candidates are not being considered because they have no ties to UW. So there's a good chance they might expand their search if they can't find suitable replacements.

I really want Don Granato regardless if he's only there for a few years. The guy was a helluva recruiter when he was with the Gamblers.

Well, I think I'd want at least one of the two assistants to have a previous connection to the program. It wouldn't need to necessarily be as a player (though that's obviously the most likely connection), but that's certainly part of the equation and selling the school to recruits.

I also think Eaves knows this - the challenge is in balancing the characteristics he'd like his staff to have across two new hires rather than just one. On the previous staff, Oz was an alum and Patrick was not - perhaps now he's shift and have the top assistant be a non-alum. I can't speak to Eaves' thought process, but given everything he's said about recruiting in the past and about his assistants in general, there's certainly value there. Likewise, I don't think Eaves has ever hesistated to hire non-alums either.

Tony's in the off season. I wonder if he'll ever get sick of the pros.

Re: Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

I was wrong on a guess. UAA released their schedule so you can see what it looks like right now. I am very skeptical about the showcase, or at least Wisconsin being involved, after everything I've heard.

You might be right about the showcase. Over on the Women's side, Duluth has released their schedule already and play at Wisconsin the friday and saturday after Thanksgiving (traditionally the time for the showcase) and both of those Women's games are at 7 PM. The basketball team is on the road at a holiday tourney, so if the Men's Hockey team was home hosting the showcase, the Women would get bumped to 2 PM since there would be no reason for the ice not to be down @ 7 PM, but I can't see them getting bumped to Verona or somewhere else to play, because if the Men were home they'd just play earlier in the day at the KC. Maybe the showcase is done, at least this give me a strong feeling that it could be, at least for Wisconsin.

Obviously I'm guessing here OR Duluth's women's schedule is a little premature on the time for their games that weekend.

Re: Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

I agree, I want to travel over to St. Louis for the Ice Breaker, but the FRI/SUN format makes it difficult. Does anyone know where I could get more information on the Ice Breaker though about tix, times, or anything. A Google search comes up empty basically.

Re: Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

Hey cool, we finally have a schedule.
2 things that popped out to me right away:
UAH on a Sunday due to Ohio State football on the Saturday night.
Edited: Not that it matters I guess, but the Packers play at noon on that same Sunday.
WCHA schedule looks a little front loaded, although of course, nothing is ever easy.

Enjoy your trip.

Feel free to bring a couple hundred of your closest friends. The Kohl Center gets a little empty during the New Year's games.

Re: Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

Baggott scooped Chuck, but he is retired I guess....

"UW men's hockey coach Mike Eaves filled the two holes on his staff Friday, naming Bill Butters and Gary Shuchuk as his assistant coaches.

Butters, 59, is a former Western Collegiate Hockey Association defenseman at Minnesota (1971-73) who played 72 games in the NHL. He previously worked as an assistant coach with the Gophers under former coach Doug Woog.

Shuchuk, 43, played for UW (1986-90) and was a All-American center for the Badgers when they won the NCAA title in '90."

Well, I'm a bit underwhelmed. On the surface he hired a washed up rodent coach and a rookie Badger. The details will emerge as we I guess.

Re: Wisconsin Offseason '10: The Aftermath

Congrats to Shu. Let's just hope that they don't have him do the TV interviews like Oz did. :D

Don't know the other guy but he probably has connections that will be beneficial.
