Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXVI: Stop looking for the silver lining and ignoring the probl

Close counts in hand grenades, horseshoes and alumni-ship. ;) I sing Varsity @ UW games and I only registered to attend UW Madison, then changed my mind.

No responses about a televised game.....we all know what Mama said, but I'm going to anyway....allowing a 3 on 1 short-handed...Kunin's cross ice pass attempt was a terrible idea, which got intercepted and allowed the 3 on 1. The there was the pathetic back-checking on that play. Kunin just effed up, get you aassss back into the play and clean up your mess.

Both 3 on 1's, where is the 2nd D? Sexton cannot come back soon enough.

Jurusik is just not showing me enough, but he's the best we've got. I was impressed with the shootout win last week, I thought he had tuned the corner a bit, but his technique is a mystery at times and he's over-moving on backside stuff, though last night it did not cost him. I hope that dud who bolted this summer is sucking wherever he is playing. Thanks for nothing (but he's an alumni, right? ;). People gave me **** about the idea of redshirting Petersen (if he would have been open to it) last year so he could compete for the starting job with bail-out-boy, it would have been pure genius. You never know and that would have been a great insurance policy that UW's be collecting on right now.

Allowing 58 sog? Getting outshot 24-3 in the second period? I know a lot of PSU's shots are garbage, and Jurusik stopped all the garbage, but come on, that translates to lack of puck possession for UW.

PSU has traditionally gave UW all sort of problems and I was hoping that UW would show some progress against them, that they are getting better against them, but this game shows no progress. At least they can score enough not to have an embarrassing box score in the end column.

Let's end on a positive. I liked the physical play, I like that they just don't roll over offensively and that they can come back against deficits. They did have a great chance to win in OT right before PSU scored, so I'm not overly PO'ed about the 3 on 1 in OT, though the missing D is an issue...darn, couldn't stay positive.

LET'S GO RED!

Jurusik is what we got. He is keeping us in most games and that is all you could ask for. He is young and will only improve. For a kid no one heard of 4/5 months ago, he has been doing pretty well when you take a step back and look at the situation he was thrown into.

You wanted to know about the kid who bolted for the OHL. He is 19-3-2. 2.32 GAA 92.1 SV%

His team has the 3rd best record in the OHL at 29-6-4.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXVI: Stop looking for the silver lining and ignoring the probl

Good news if Wisconsin can pull a win tonight....they'll take the lead in the all time series over Penn St. That would be very impressive against a program in it's 5th season of D1. The positives from watching last nights game is Eaves trapping style has been replaced by something much more entertaining and the Badgers actually have a couple lines worth of good forwards and maybe 3 quality D men. Bad news is they are atrocious defensively. Penn State may get 70 or 80 shot tonight!!!

Pretty spot on. 4-9-6, Eaves has to know this is the final year for him.

"maybe 3 quality D men" That just doesn't cut it and is the main reason for the record, imo. 3 quality guys playing over 25 minutes isn't the recipe for success. They are being put in a position to fail.

I want this group of players to win so bad. They never give up and have stuck with the program. They just can't close out a game and it is directly related to the above.

PSU coach should be pretty proud, that is a quality team on the ice after 5 years.

On the SHG it was actually a 2-3. Here's a pic:

<a href="http://imgur.com/7gcOKPl"><img src="http://i.imgur.com/7gcOKPl.jpg?1" title="source: imgur.com" /></a>

All Kunin had to do was skate a couple strides up ice and he had Wags in front of him to create a 2-1 entry. Agree it was a terrible, terrible cross ice decision. But to be fair on the rest he is back checking as that's Kunin to the left of Davison. The play is on Luke, but Davison doesn't recognize UW has numbers and he needs to aggressively check Dylan Richard there. Probably should regardless, but he's very slow to react and Richard gets a perfect shot off.

Great example though of just why the Badgers haven't been able to turn the corner. They do a lot of good things, and then they make these kinds of plays. It's not a question of talent, or even effort, to me it's 100% mental. It's adjusting to the speed of the game and the speed at which decisions have to be made and acted upon.

3-1 at the end had Hughes get hammered to the boards and laying on the ice, Kunin was gassed and changing. Eddie jumped up to intercept a pass and missed it, which he can't do with no support, but that's where the other D is. Jurusic gave it up easy but really, any rebound was probably going to go in anyway.

Game could have been 2-3-4 to 0 in the first ten minutes. Badgers missed a lot of open nets in this game. Besse is in a real funk lately and can't get it in. Could have, probably should have, had a hattrick last night. 2nd was just plain awful, but 1st and 3rd, Badgers probably had more quality chances than PSU. Gotta put some in.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXVI: Stop looking for the silver lining and ignoring the probl

On the D, I think Jake Bunz is doing a nice job, all things considered. Tischke just isn't ready yet.
I watch him a lot and I feel like Linhart has worked hard and has really improved his defensive game. He has plenty of room to improve and he's usually physically over matched, but he has gone from "you just can't play that guy" to being reasonably solid over the last several games.

I thought K. Schulze was very weak with the puck last night and gave it up a bunch of times. What do you guys think about his play overall? Two years ago I thought he was one of the 10 best D in the country and possibly headed to an All American type status by now. He's a good player but he's not where I thought he might be. Part of it is maybe a function of his pairings, as he's had to cover a lot of ground, but he's much less of a play maker than I thought he'd be with his superior skating ability. He's solid but has really struggled to advance to a higher level and become a dominant player.

Davison... Now there's a frustrating situation. He's so good with the puck, and so bad without it. Here's a statement: If he could play defense, he'd be a great defensemen.

Eddie did get his first point in two years, so there's that.

Overall I think that some of our gliding forwards are as much to blame as the D on a lot of breakdowns. Guys seem to fall into a comfort zone too often and caught by someone who's feet are moving.

I feel you have seen more games than me this year.

Bunz, the way he came to be on this team. We are pretty lucky that it even happened. He has filled in and worked for what the situation is. The situation is the problem. There was someone on campus that was able to walk-on and get playing time the following season.

Is it a scouting/recruiting/coaching/development issue or a little bit of all of them?

K. Schulze, was very good the first two years. I feel it was the role he was in, he was a very good second/third pairing Dman. Now he is expected to be everywhere on the ice the whole game. He has been set up to fail.

Not much more to say about Davison.

I hope Eddie gets his degree.

.

I could have swore it ended up being an odd man rush for PSU. I am losing my mind.

Schulz looked weak last night, Eddie played hard and physical, Linhart is getting better, he was so over matched last year, Sexton has looked good, Tischke is not as strong as I had hoped he would be, I have no opinion on Bunz yet, have not seen enough, Davison does not jump out at you one way or another.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXVI: Stop looking for the silver lining and ignoring the probl

I felt like they did pretty good against Penn State. Too much sloppy play and way too many stretch passes though, IMO. At least BTN got what they wanted. They spent the whole game pumping PSU's tires about what a great hockey power they have turned into and how great the Penn State fans are. Funny because 90% of the time, the PSU fans were sitting on their hands. Hockey Valley, my butt.

Well... it was full and they are winning.

Not sure what the BTN got wrong.

On another note, scored this poster in perfect condition on eBay this week for $10:

<a href="http://i.imgur.com/5HPGQsJ.jpg"><img src="http://i.imgur.com/5HPGQsJ.jpg?1" title="Hosted by imgur.com" /></a>

Downturns are a great time to score memorabilia on the cheap. ;)

Used to have it tacked to the wall in my college apartments after it happened, but it got trashed and eventually I pitched it.

Been looking for a replacement periodically over the past 15 years.

It's a little weird as I now know 6 of the guys personally and grew up with Kurtz, but whatever. Glad to have it.

Love the Heileman's logo as I went to school in LaCrosse and Heileman's was a big part of that city and my time there. Also - you'd never see that on a college sports poster these days.

It's dry-mounted, framed and up in the cave.

Great find and a nice reminder of the first Championship team that I actively followed - was 12 in '83 and only just beginning to follow sports of any kind.

Bunz wasn't an on campus walk on, he was playing in his 2nd year for the USHL Chicago Steel the first half of last year. Had visited UW previously and it's possible he would have been offered anyway, (he would have been offered somewhere, if not here) but was offered a spot when Keegan Ford quit. His younger brother Davis playing for Middleton HS is a pretty good prospect as well, played on USA select 17's this year and was Team Wisconsin Captain.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXVI: Stop looking for the silver lining and ignoring the probl

I know where we can all meet each other, although the Dane County Sheriff's Deputies will have be there. I've been to many USHL Capitols games, but never on Dollar Beer Night. Holy ****! That place is more rowdy than The Duck Pond. I felt like I was 21 again; I had a blast. It got a LITTLE out of hand when some friends of one of the Cap players from Minnesota () were ragging on the Czech goalie from the Steel, but a Coliseum official calmly walked up to the boys, smiled, talked quietly, everybody laughed, game on. Frickin' stadium horns, pounding on the glass, chants, dancing, you name it. (Except NO Kohl Center Panzer Division or Gestapo.)

I haven't had a great time at a hockey game in Madison like that in years.....just a thought.

Thank you for clearing that up for me.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXVI: Stop looking for the silver lining and ignoring the probl

Three wide open chances for the Badgers on that last PP from inside of 15 feet. None of them even went on net. And I gotta believe Besse scores on that look 99 times out of 100...

Just stick with it boys.
