Wisconsin Hockey XXXVI: Stop looking for the silver lining and ignoring the problem!!

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXVI: Stop looking for the silver lining and ignoring the probl

...

I was certainly hoping that we'd win, but in 06, I was sure* we were going to win. So much so that I bought Regional and FF tickets well in advance.

...

I did the exact same thing and I agree with you about that 06 team versus the 10 and 14 teams. Never had that feeling with them. In fact the 14 team was not good away from home including the stinkers in Boston that year.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXVI: Stop looking for the silver lining and ignoring the probl

BC's waterbugs seemed to have little difficulty with the ice against our NHL prospects.

Of course, my memory could be shady as I only watched that game the one time.

I just remember thinking during the game though that we weren't gonna score. It was "one of those nights" and it was palpable to me.

I'd say your recollection is accurate. I felt that despite of the way BC was handling UW, if Davies gets it to a 1-1 game at that point, UW had a chance. Up to that point it did feel a little hopeless, then the wheels fell off and that was it.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXVI: Stop looking for the silver lining and ignoring the probl

Actually, to be fair, the "glory years" actually ended in the early 90s with the loss and meltdown against Lake State and the couple of years after.

Really hasn't been the same since and I believe a lot of us thought it was back on track with the slow (4 year) build to the 06 championship. Unfortunately, it couldn't be sustained.

And bone to pick with Eaves?

Yes.

He's overseen the final destruction of a once proud program, turning it from one of the top ten programs of all time (when he took over - it was higher ranked in the mid-80s) to whatever hell hole it resides in now.

And Alvarez is right there with him as Eaves should have been gone by 2012 at the latest.

The attendance don't lie. If they were above .500 most years with some peaks and played a style that wasn't completely gut-wrenchingly boring, the fans would still be there.

Eaves hasn't been able to right the ship in almost 10 years now as the ups and mostly downs started the year after the last title.

Should have been fired last year. One of Barry's many mistakes as an AD.
Agree on Eaves. Its time to move on and find someone who can restore Wisconsin hockey to being something that has a winning record most years and is making the Frozen Four on a regular basis.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXVI: Stop looking for the silver lining and ignoring the probl

I wonder what would have transpired if Sauer hadn't been pushed out. I was an advocate for change back then but think of this...he's got a decent sniper in Alex Leavitt with Burish, mcmurchy, Gilbert, licari, degenhardt etc coming in. Could he have landed Suter? Certainly earl would have gone to Michigan, and maybe joudrey doesn't come to Madison, but I wonder if Sauer could have had a late period resurgence.

Just stuff I think about when Wisconsin hockey has 4 wins to show for itself on January 12th. Christ, in years past 4 wins by the end of November would have been easy as hell.

Any word on Fredric?

In a word... No.

I was at a couple of team banquets towards the end and the level of disrespect that his players showed towards him was disappointing and eye opening. Talking and laughing amongst themselves while he was giving his speech, etc.

I remember Heatley showing up in a suit and wearing flip-flops. Of course he had just signed and was a millionaire, but still.

Sauer was done.

I have fond memories and he's a really nice guy in person, but his time was up.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXVI: Stop looking for the silver lining and ignoring the probl

Switch Hobie Blake with Burish and we definitely don't win in 06.

This could go on and on and it's pointless.

.

Well, of course it's pointless! When have I ever had a good point?

And I'm not sure I'm buying Burish for Blake. I get why you say it, and I know it's almost blasphemous to disagree, but man, Blake produced 28g/50pts. and was still one of the best two-way players in college hockey. 28 goals fills a pretty big hole on a team.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXVI: Stop looking for the silver lining and ignoring the probl

Well here we are at mid-season and while this season has been mildly more entertaining than last season's toilet bowl, here is what we have to show for it.

We have 4 wins which is the same as last season. But alas, 2 of those win came against Arizona State, a first year team without a conference. Take away those two wins and that means ASU has beaten more real teams than Wisconsin! Excluding ASU, the only team nationally with fewer wins than Wisconsin is Niagra.

Attendance is down again, and our fearless leader is talking about making hay when all we are getting is horse apples. Please BA, pull the trigger so the turn-around can begin!

I bumped into him in the concession crowd at APT one night, nearly spilling my coffee, and he was very polite.

I didn't see any recruits with him.

Probably a shock to you burd, but the vast majority of people in the world do not completely lose their minds just because you spill a little liquid on them.

Yeah, I sort of forgot about rhe banquets and the kids showing him no respect.

It was bored musings and a bit of nostalgia because when I started attending games it was just after Sauer took over and it was still a glorious time to be a fan.

Realizing today the team has 4 wins and will likely end up under double digit wins again sent me down memory lane.

As an aside, I hope Burish becomes a coach someday

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXVI: Stop looking for the silver lining and ignoring the probl

Sigh, the 99-00 team flaming out still hurts more than 2010 team losing in the championship.

Agreed. I had higher hopes/expectations for the 99-00 team than I did for 09-10 team or 14 team. Being at the Kohl for the presentation of the MacNaughton Cup was awesome. And then I still remember how queasy my stomach got when the brackets were released and it was evident we'd get BC after the bye. The nervousness set in because I knew we were legit; but, could be tripped up by BC, which proved to be the case. Had they still been playing series though, I think we would have taken it.

I was excited/happy to see the 09-10 team do well; but, I agree that I never really felt like that was a championship team throughout that season, and always felt like a loss was coming somewhere.

Oh, and while I was happy Blake won the Hobey, I think Reinprecht may have been more deserving in 2000 - he really had a great year.

If we don't win 10, Eaves must be fired. I don't think it's too much to ask. That is 6 wins the rest of the way: 3 out of 4 vs Michigan St and Alaska at home (very doable); and 3 other wins (out of 16 games). The big 10 is down, so this really shouldn't be expecting too much. For me to get any confidence in Eaves back, I'd want to see them win at least 12.

Otherwise, let's get a new coach in start building this thing again. Delaying only puts us further behind. Have to think Michigan St will correct the dumpster fire that is Anastos this offseason, and Michigan will be replacing Red soon - it would be nice to not have to compete for a new head coach with them.

Intangibles >>>>>> Decent Production.

I loved Blake, but seriously... Burish was a captain of captains.

Him and the senior class and that little meeting and the rest is history.

And I know you said that you know why I said what I said, but...

I like to read my own writing. :D

There's no way he won't.

At least of his own kids' teams.

And going out on a limb here, but I think he'll be decent at it. :)

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXVI: Stop looking for the silver lining and ignoring the probl

So how many B16 teams will have new coaches within the next 5 years?

Most here would say Eaves will go. So there is 1.
It seems like there is a movement at Minnesota for something new. That could be 2.
There is a similar uproar in the Michigan State world. Maybe we see 3.
How long can Red continue coaching? That could make it 4.
Gadowsky has never been one to stay in a place for too long. Could he leave Penn State make it 5?
Rohlik at Ohio State is young and hasn't been trending in the right direction in his first shot at the head position. Could we see all 6?

I think this topic could support a thread all by itself...gather all of the angst of the B16 fan bases into one location, could this board even handle that?

Wisko published this on the Minnesota page, but does this sound familiar....

http://www.citypages.com/news/what-happened-to-the-university-of-minnesota-hockey-program-7960026

Great points. Lucia may be suffering Jeff Sauer syndrome where the team may need to play with 5 pucks out there, all talent but no discipline aka Wisconsin in 92, 93 and 94.

Also, ha ha ha the big ten sucks. Barry and the boys will never acknowledge that and in the future why would other schools listen if the b10 schools seek realignment

Having no special inside info, I'd put the odds at:
Anastos: 95% likely fired after this year
Eaves: 50% likely after this year; 50% likely fired after next year
Red: 50% likely to retire after this year; 75% likely to retire after next year
Rohlik: 30% after each year (I actually think they may be trending up; but, their admin doesn't seem that engaged which could be good or bad)
TDon: 25% each year
Gadowsky: 5% - I think he's there for at least 2 more years.

Yeah, likely to see a lot of turnover in the next 2-3 years due to firing and/or retirements (or forced retirements)

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXVI: Stop looking for the silver lining and ignoring the probl

Checked my powerball numbers. Sadly, the Chuck Schwartz Suite at the Kohl Center is not happening for us.

Sorry guys.
