Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

You know her son is a future badger, right?

I was not aware of that. Fascinating that she would follow a parody account that mocks the coach. In fact, it makes me like her more.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXV: A Season without Chuck

I'm sure his game evolved and got better, though yeah it's not NHL level.

After a couple cups of coffee in the AHL, he's been quite successful in Europe; KHL, SM-Liga (Finland), Swedish Elite League, and most recent in the "Deutsche Eishockey League", as was mentioned. That German team also has long time NHL'er and Milwaukee native Dave Steckel. He likes Euro for now and has raised a family.

Note: Let's fill the frickin' LaBahn Centre for all the women's games. We've got to show the imperial Leader that a successful program puts butts in the sears.

I used to do Center Ice through DirecTV, but have found it much more convenient to go through the NHL direct with Gamecenter just because of device flexibility. My NHL budget is a bit crazy this year (especially if I get to the 4 or 5 Isles games if I am planning on going to.)

Excellent choice as well. I actually looked into it. MCR Jr is a subscriber.

Steckel! I remember him from his Capitals days. When they were down a goal with an empty net, it wasn't uncommon to see him out there with Ovechkin, Backstrom, Semin, Green, etc. Why? That offensive zone face-off. Even the Washington Post was willing to devote space to an article about Steckel's face-off prowess.

Aaaan we already have analogy #2...

Question 3
How much time did you look back at last year to analyze things, or do you just look forward?

Answer
I haven’t looked back at a game. We were so involved on a day-to-day basis last year, that two weeks to a month after, you sit back and reflect that it was a tough year. It really adds up that you only had four wins.

I don’t want to sound naïve or underplay the season, but the fact is the guys hung together and we survived, though not the way we wanted to. You look outside of things and for me, it reminded me a little bit of Ernest Shackleton and his trip to Antarctica. They got locked in the ice and were frozen in for over a year and all 28 men lived to tell about. They didn’t achieve their goal, but because they hung together and there was good leadership, they all survived.

It will be interesting to meet with last year’s group 10 years from now and ask what they remember and how it affected everyone moving forward. What did we all learn?

I love the Shackelton reference, awesome. Way better than the arrow one.

No metaphors today in question #4. :(

Doesn't "dotting ‘I’s and crossing ‘T’s" count.

I suppose that could, though obviously very common that I would not hold that against him.

That will not be too hard to push it to the limit, I'd bet 300 more per non rodent series would do the trick for most weekend. Got my season tickets last week. Overall I'm excited to see the lads and lassies on the ice.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

"We know that we have passion and we have energy"

Every D1 team has passion and energy,
Now we just need some TALENT.

we only seem to have energy for maybe 1 period a game. Those other two.....not so much.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

Can someone confirm this, did we play UW-Oshkosh last weekend in an exhibition match (5-0 win)? My buddy at school said he saw them when he was visiting.

Edit: found the answer. UW-Madison has a club team that plays DII.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The joke is on us losers! No games on TV until the 11th game of the year and 14 out of 34 on tv. 5 games on TV in WI between the start of the season and January *****in 15th. Not 1 game on Fox Sports WI, not one....really???? UW hockey is DEAD to the world. DEAD. I sure hope WPT picks a few games up, but the release does not imply more will get picked up. How can a fan get invested in a team that they cannot see play? The glory years of having just about every home game on TV are long dead. I really feel like my heart is being ripped out of my chest. I love WI men's hockey but I sure feel like I'm just being dumped by my wife of 25 years. This is absolutely PATHETIC, DISGUSTING AND MADDENING. Email Jason King your thoughts. JWK @athletics.wisc.edu.

And don't forget there will be no objective newspaper reporting on the team at all with Baggot gone.

I'm sure more games will be picked up closer to the season starting. That's what heppened last year...

This is what happens when:

* They want hockey to be where they know it could be at UW: a major sport, despite not being as strongly supported as the (by far) biggest college sports in the US, football and basketball.

* They don't fully act like they realize that Wisconsin hockey IS college hockey in the Madison market. The relevance of the program in the minds of the public hinges on what the athletic department does, and if it hinges on what ESPN says, game over.

* That allows people to view hockey as a slightly more popular sport in the category of UW volleyball, soccer, etc - no disrespect to those teams of course, but the ceiling for how "big" those programs can be is lower - rather than one of the "big" sports, without quite as much ubiquity in the national sports scene.

That troll from a while back had the reasons wrong, but the answer correct, about what kind of a program UW would look like over the years.

By the way, Timothy, I really like this comment, and feel the same way. And this comes from someone who was only just beginning to consider Wisconsin when I watched the 2010 title game as a neutral, curious fan who grew up far away from college hockey. I completely agree, right down to every extra "ha" and exclamation mark.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

What happened to FS-Wisconsin, anyway? Didn't they use to show Wisconsin hockey games? Since I started at UW in 2011, they haven't shown a single game on their own. The only ones they've shown have been simulcasts with FS-North and FS-Detroit. Yup, even MSU got a game on FS-Detroit, but the BADGERS can't get a game on FS-Wisconsin. Which program has the capacity to be more prominent? Which program has more to compete with on TV in their region?

Edit: I think Timothy A's reaction is a fair one, even if the numbers go up. It would be a fair reaction even if we were only looking at the last few years as opposed to this year.

I'm not sure FS-Wisconsin is even a thing anymore. I think there are like 3 FS-North stations. At least that's what it is on Directtv.

Well, it's definitely a thing. I passed by it in order to get to BTN to watch tonight's volleyball match. I passed by that terribly-named "Badger Sports Report." (Side note: I get why they'll focus on the sports with broader appeal, but don't act like it's a UW athletics show. It's exclusively football, and then exclusively basketball. "On, Wisconsin" with Brian Posick was everything, then WTSO got rid of it.)

I'm sure it goes back further than this, but I remember when I first started following UW hockey around 2004, there were a lot of games on FSN, even a handful of road games outside of the Goof games.

If you graphed attendance and tv coverage over the last 10-15 years, they'd probably be pretty similar.
