Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

While we're on the topic of the gigantic downfall, I find it crazy how a school with a bajillion hockey fans* has managed to have those students not care about their hockey team like they used to.

*Walking around campus, it becomes clear that this number is correct.

I suppose I should stop worrying about it, because it becomes increasingly frustrating to watch this program crumble, not being able to do anything about it.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

Last year UW was on tv/internet 26 times...ROOT 1, WI Channel 7, BTN 10, ASN 4, ESPN News 1, FSN 3.
This year so far UW is on tv 13/internet times..........WI Channel 0, BTN 5, ASN 3, ESPN News 1, FSN 0, CN9000 4.

What's with the gigantic drop on BTN? Is it because they sucked last year and may suck this year? We're now relegated to ugly step sister status on BTN? Here's a quick breakdown of BTN schools on TV.

Rodents 27
MSU 18
MI 17
OSU 13
UW 13
PSU 10

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

As the season approaches, I am not even excited. There is a game in two weeks and you wouldn't even know it. It's like the program just fell off the map.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

My oldest daughter keeps asking me when the first game is and when she can start watching Badger games. She's 10 years old and went to her first game when she was less than a month old. Hockey was the first word that she used that wasn't "Momma or Dada."

I'm glad that she's still a fan of Wisconsin hockey and wants to sit and watch the games with me, but I was honestly more interested in watching the Islanders pre-season game, with her, last night than I have been for any of the Wisconsin games this season.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The joke is on us losers! No games on TV until the 11th game of the year and 14 out of 34 on tv. 5 games on TV in WI between the start of the season and January *****in 15th. Not 1 game on Fox Sports WI, not one....really???? UW hockey is DEAD to the world. DEAD. I sure hope WPT picks a few games up, but the release does not imply more will get picked up. How can a fan get invested in a team that they cannot see play? The glory years of having just about every home game on TV are long dead. I really feel like my heart is being ripped out of my chest. I love WI men's hockey but I sure feel like I'm just being dumped by my wife of 25 years. This is absolutely PATHETIC, DISGUSTING AND MADDENING. Email Jason King your thoughts. JWK @athletics.wisc.edu.

And don't forget there will be no objective newspaper reporting on the team at all with Baggot gone.[/QUOTE

I wrote to Jason king. He won't respond because the entire admin doesn't care about hockey.

I emailed him. He has responded to me in the past. He actually called me to discuss concerns about the women's schedule a few years ago. His response to my last email about the men's program was just a rah rah response, which I expect this time as well. There's nothing to rah rah over a 50% reduction in men's games on tv/internet (at this point). Just when I start getting excited about the season I get kicked in the nuts. Even though I'm past wanting to produce another child, it still hurts.

What happened to FS-Wisconsin, anyway? Didn't they use to show Wisconsin hockey games? Since I started at UW in 2011, they haven't shown a single game on their own. The only ones they've shown have been simulcasts with FS-North and FS-Detroit. Yup, even MSU got a game on FS-Detroit, but the BADGERS can't get a game on FS-Wisconsin. Which program has the capacity to be more prominent? Which program has more to compete with on TV in their region?

Edit: I think Timothy A's reaction is a fair one, even if the numbers go up. It would be a fair reaction even if we were only looking at the last few years as opposed to this year.

They still carry some games, but the number of games has certainly declined. I remember being ticked that they bumped a Wild game here in Milwaukee to show a Badger game recently (not saying they shouldn't, my anger had more to do with the fact that Milwaukee is also a blackout area for Wild games on Center Ice. But that is for another discussion).

It seems to me that the coverage of Badger hockey on FSW has declined as Wild coverage has grown. Guessing it is TV ratings related. Lots of Wild fans in Western Wisconsin and also more than you'd think here in Milwaukee.

I think the BTN has had some effect too. Even FSN has cut down the number of Gopher games covered and they have picked up other MN D1 games.

I'm still having a hard time remaining positive about the effects of the conference shakeup. Long term I think it is going to be great for the B1G schools, but the transition has been more painful than I anticipated.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXV: A Season without Chuck

An observation from someone who has vowed to check out on Wisconsin hockey until the ***-hat, better know as Coach Eaves gets the hook from BA.

I look at the program as a business unit of the athletic department with revenue objectives and goals to meet. When your brand (hockey) has been in decline, you can promote it, you can improve the product or discount it. Since the CEO (Eaves) has not improved the product and Corporate (athletic department) has not discounted the tickets....so where is the old excuse maker to generate interest in the program? Have you seen Mike anywhere promoting the program like Bob Johnson did? Has he done anything to arose interest with the general public or student body? All I have to say is Mike Eaves quit stealing your salary and do the right thing for the school which has provided so much for you and your family and QUIT!!! Because that would be the only coaching move you have gotten right in a long time!

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think FSWI is basically run/programmed out of Minny. As an example, any Brewers/Bucks post-game shows where both parties aren't in the same spot, the host is usually in Minnesota, though it says "FSWI Studios". I always looked at FSWI as basically a subchannel of FSNorth. The same stuff and then swapping Brewers/Twins, Bucks/Twolves, etc. I assumed for the last few years that as the Bucks return to relevance and others' interest rises, that will put the squeeze on any Badgers games being aired on FSWI. I think the last few years have borne that out.

Though more games may be added to the TV schedule, it's not going to be what it used to be. I think I wrote this last year, but I originally got Charter back in 2003 specifically because there were so many games on FSWI (then FSNorth I believe). I've since made my way to Uverse due to fewer service interruptions vs. Charter and now of course, I don't get the Wisconsin Channel unless I use rabbit ears, which I still can't figure out how to do on my TV. Between that and the paucity of games on channels I do get (not ASN, whatever the bleep that is?!), it will be hard to gin up the internal interest in really following the team closely. They are losing a generation of fans as the TV coverage declines. I learned about Badger hockey as a child growing up in Milwaukee staying up to watch those late night replays which eventually led to asking for tickets to the Bank One Showdown at the Bradley Center for Christmas presents and subsequently to attending every game for 11 years through college, grad school, and a few years after that. Oh well, I suppose. Perhaps we'll have more than a handful of W's or some hay in the barn or be halfway up the mountain by the time the games make it to TV next year. They haven't lost me yet, but they sure as heck are trying.

Kunin sniped and hit the pipe on a backhand in the AAPG on NHLN. He could be your best player by halfway through the year.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

...not ASN, whatever the bleep that is...

There's actually a good chance you'll be able to find games on ASN if you try. There isn't a channel for ASN, but they wiggle their way onto local affiliates.

I haven't done any extensive surveys, but Badger hockey is pretty much entirely off the map in that area, unless a young hockey fan specifically makes an effort to seek it out. (That's based on what I've gathered from people from that area.) I know I don't need to tell all of you this, but that's why good coverage is so freaking important.

A year ago today, I was expecting a bad year (not as bad as it turned out to be), with the Badgers lack of depth being exposed. I expected 2015-16 to be decent, based on players like Kunin coming in to help bring things together. Of course, we've seen a handful of important players leave, but it's nice to know there are still a few impact players coming in.

Edit: Wait...Kunin is pronounced with a short 'u'? I was pronouncing it "KOO-nin."

It is pronounced KOO-nin. Who's pronouncing it differently?

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

I'm not sure I'm remembering correctly or not but wasn't there some grumblings that Frederic had kind of opened his recuitment back up? Seems like he's still committed based on the line chart.

And apparently I've pronouncing Kunin wrong too. Somebody better tell the PA announcer at the Kohl because he said it wrong too.

This is the only thing I've seen.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey XXXIV: A Season without Chuck

I received an email back from Jason King which was in essence the obligatory "rah rah, thanks for your support, we have a number of games on tv that is generally in line with the other schools"

I wish I could say he knows how distraught the fanbase is (particularly the hardcore season ticketholders from the 70's, 80's, 90's) but he seems absolutely clueless.

I honestly cannot fathom how he could say "thank you for your support" in response to an email that essentially detailed how frustrated and disconsolate the shrinking fanbase is and how having less games on tv exacerbates the problem with developing new fans to replace the ones who've walked.
