Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXXII: No Where To Go But Up!

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXXII: No Where To Go But Up!

I just want to see 4 consecutive 20+ win seasons with NCAA appearances. Balance out the classes and balance out the results. One-and-done tournaments are far to unpredictable to put all your bets on one season.

I absolutely agree and it's not unrealistic to expect the above at all.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXXII: No Where To Go But Up!

It's not that much when you consider attendance. We ran some of these numbers before a game at the Red Shed.

Consider 2,000 less season tickets (or more), times 20 home dates, times $20 - equals $800k. So in one year, if you turn things around you can easily pay off the buyout. That is before concessions and parking. Now start keeping those new attendees at the games or getting them to the games and you sell more concessions. They have to notice the reduction in revenue through attendance and season tickets reductions and have to consider making a change just to stop the bleeding.

I have sent my letter to the Athletic Dept that this year is it, make a change or I won't be renewing some or all of my tickets for both nights. I am also waiting to see what happens on my donation to the Badger Fund which will be $0 if a change isn't made.

I'm right there with you. My Dad and I have season tickets for Saturday and donate to the Badger Fund. We're going to be contacting the Athletic Department regarding our concern for Men's Hockey and letting them know in no uncertain terms that if a change isn't made we will not renew. As 30-year season ticket holders (and I bet many of you have held tickets for that long or longer) you'd think they'd acknowledge the problem we're addressing in our letters.

...

"At least they still like basketball?"

- The athletic department, presumably

I suspect that the overlap between BB and HKY season ticket holders isn't all that high. Plus, unless they start selling SRO tickets BB doesn't have much room for ticket sales growth.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXXII: No Where To Go But Up!

I was just thinking about the program this way. 5 years ago we were celebrating the program's first Hobey Baker winner, the Defense of the Ages, and a shot at NC #7 in Detroit.

Now we have less wins on March 2nd than our program has national championships....I'm not sure this is acceptable on December 2nd let alone the end of the season.

Given the screwy scheduling, they may not have even played 6 games by Dec 2 (at least it feels that way)

I'd be absolutely shocked if this team matches the number of NC in wins this season. At least the team will have a winning % over 0.100!

I guess it comes down to what you are looking for out of a team.

You can have the results of Michigan under Berenson, which has been to the tournament pretty much every year since 1990, but hasn't won a title since 1998 and has only been to championship game sice...or you can have Wisconsin under Eaves, which makes the tournament about half of the time, but has a recent title (2006) and another finals appearance in 2010.

Personally, I'm OK with having the highs and the lows when the highs are as high as they have been. Yes, last season was supposed to be a high year and we got bounced in the first round; that happens, nothing is guarenteed. But who is to say that we wouldn't get bounced in the first round every year if we are coming in as a 12th-14th ranked team? I'd rather have the real shot at making something happen every few years than be an 1st round out every year.

I'm OK with Eaves staying, and I know I'm in the minority with that. If you want to use this year as the straw that broke the camel's back I can't fault you for that, it just isn't my personal view.

True on the schedule part, I was being a tad bold hoping for some hay in the barn, but in most years Bucky has played 10 to 12 games by Dec 1st. We should be expecting 6-4 or 7-5 records (or better), but in the Eaves era have rarely gotten those either. Usually playing from behind and missing the tourney by being the last team out where any of a dozen games ending differently would have got the team in.

I'm sick of being on the bubble (at best except every 4th year), I'm sick of watching players coached not to score (3rd and 4th lines) and not to play to win late in games, I'm sick of excuses and platitudes. I want results year in and year out.

I have actually considered what it would be like to be a Michigan hockey fan before, because they have been so consistent. I'm sure some of us would become unhappy without NCs coming in the door no matter what, but I know it would be exciting to cheer on a team that was in the mix EVERY season. All it takes is a hot goalie or a few hot players to carry a team in the tourney, and Michigan has done a great job of GETTING there year after year after year.

My girlfriend's entire family are LSU football fans (she is from Louisiana) and I know that winning consistently doesn't satisfy every fan. They have a "down" year going 8-5 or 9-4 and people are calling for Les Miles to be fired because they should win the National Championship EVERY year. Personally, I would long for down years like that at any program, because I recognize that even in the best of seasons the stars need to align to win a NC, especially in one and done formats. Like in the Michigan example, getting the chance to win that NC is the first step, and watching the Regionals on TV is not that first step.

I didn't read the rest of the thread, but what happened to your recruiting?

I'm not sure what you mean? You only had like, what... six new guys this year? We had eleven guys come in!

Seems pretty clear that's FIVE better recruiting than you.

Great, I hope you have 11 every year.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXXII: No Where To Go But Up!

Apparently Keegan Ford committed to Michigan Tech today for those who care.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXXII: No Where To Go But Up!

Maybe he really likes broomball? Or a ski hill across the river? Or **** I don't even know anymore.

Perhaps just best to admit that it was a hockey decision, pure and simple.

Or maybe he just loves the PK Ditty?

Wisconsin hockey: We're losing kids to Michigan Tech because of hockey reasons.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXXII: No Where To Go But Up!

A kid preferring the environment at MTU over Wisconsin is more plausible than a lot of other potential places (like the rest of the Big Ten). I'm not saying it wasn't a hockey decision, but he can at least pretend it had to do with the school/city/environment.

He was likely blocked from transferring within the conference. I'm not speaking on information I have, but it wouldn't surprise me.
