Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXVIII: This could be a banner year, but how would we know?

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXVIII: This could be a banner year, but how would we know?

Fair enough. I just don't think you can make a blanket statement about it. Losing Little alone is different then losing Kerdiles and Little, and now Kerdiles and Barnes.

Kerdiles played about four minutes of monster hockey since the WJC and then went down. Different team without him. How would we have faired without Heater? (not to compare the two, but it makes a big difference as to who goes down.)

The 99-00 team played quite well without Heatley and Reinprecht(not at the same time) when they were out with injuries or the WJC.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXVIII: This could be a banner year, but how would we know?

If you haven't already heard, Kerdiles is officially IN the lineup. Barnes is OUT.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXVIII: This could be a banner year, but how would we know?

Best part about this win is that the Badgers can play a much better game.

Rau woke up McCabe who was not with it early on. Played like a champion down the stretch.

The KC better be rockin' tomorrow night for the sweep!

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXVIII: This could be a banner year, but how would we know?

Yes, I was very disappointed by McCabe on the turnover...but he finished well.

The place will be rocking tomorrow, a caravan from central Wi will be heading down around noon, and be fired up by the time the puck drops.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXVIII: This could be a banner year, but how would we know?

Rumpel was a wall. Now the Gophers know what that feels like. Good game.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXVIII: This could be a banner year, but how would we know?

Less than 9,000 in the stands against the Rodents. Ouch.

Maybe after last year and the midweek game this year, our fans are just getting used to the idea of only seeing the gophers at home once.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXVIII: This could be a banner year, but how would we know?

I would think that it being Thursday had something to do with it.

It certainly does, but it makes me sad when there were <9,000 there tonight (the students were as fired up as ever, though). Meanwhile, when the basketball team plays some random opponent we've never heard of, the Kohl Center is close to full, apart from the student section. I have nothing against the basketball team. I'm a season ticket holder and go to those games. However, there are so many people who just don't know what they're missing. This was a great game, and everyone was so fired up, it was insane.

Our fanbase is obsessed with the basketball team and I still don't understand the appeal.

My old college friends and I still have an ongoing email thread dating back to our college years and none of them will shut up about the basketball team.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXVIII: This could be a banner year, but how would we know?

It wasn't Wisconsin's best game, but there are some good things I noticed. For one, Kerdiles had immediate chemistry again with Zengerle despite not playing together all season. Those two were dangerous all night. Besse was a good complimentary player on that line after he was bumped up. Obviously Rumpel was outstanding. As others have mentioned, McCabe's game picked up considerably after the turnover. One player who is never talked about but I think his game has grown leaps and bounds is Wittchow. He was outstanding for much of the game. He has so much more confidence right now compared to this time last season. He's also an underrated passer. He sent one home run pass to Meuer that should have sent him on a breakaway, but he flubbed it off the end of his stick.

In case anyone is wondering, Barnes won't play tomorrow either.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXVIII: This could be a banner year, but how would we know?

After losing in the closing seconds to the Gophers earlier in the season, I was more than a little worried for the final minutes and then the penalty and I felt like I was watching through my fingers. So that final faceoff where Kerdiles just totally took Ambroz off his skates was one of the most important plays of the game, IMO. There was about :35 on the clock, Minny on the PP in their offensive zone and Kerdiles effectively ended the game. I may have rewound the DVR and watched it two more times after the game was over. Just really a clutch play.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXVIII: This could be a banner year, but how would we know?

I echo some others thoughts that Wisconsin won, but certainly didn't play a great game overall. I really liked Rumpel's calm play throughout, no matter the pressure Minnesota was putting on. Even the goal he gave up, he was really hung out to try with the completely unexpected terrible turnover by McCabe.

With that said, McCabe played with a chip on his shoulder for the rest of the game after that. Kerdiles added a lot of energy up front and he and Zengerle had several quality looks. I really hope he can stay healthy for the remainder of the season.

BTN didn't have a great broadcast. Some wrong names, wrong hometowns and Andringa sounded like he was in a tin can reporting from the ice level. The play-by-play guy even said that they were going for a "record" crowd on Friday. Umm, Kohl Center has been sold out before so I'm not sure what he was talking about. I expect things to be cleaned up much more for tonight's game.

While I didn't expect 14,000+ for last night, I'm surprised they couldn't crack 10,000. I assume that it being Thursday night was the biggest reason for it, but weekday games have never stopped basketball games from pulling just as big of crowds as on the weekends. I know the Friday/Saturday night format has been around forever, but Thursday night isn't that far out of the box. I will say though that the student section really came across as very loud on TV.

Biggest game of the year is tonight. With a sweep, Badgers really do get back in Big Ten contention. Overall, they do need a better overall effort, because I'm not sure it's reasonable to expect Rumpel to hold the Gophers to one goal again.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXVIII: This could be a banner year, but how would we know?

It didn't seem like 9k on TV to me. It sounded pretty loud and full. BTN's broadcast was not great as you mentioned. The PBP guy seemed more biased than the gopher analyst. Clymer needs to speak a little faster and cut his long-winded missives down; they bled into the action too often. I thought Andringa (terrible audio aside) added a bit to the broadcast such as mentioning Dahl being hurt, but then again, no one seemed to mention when Dahl came back. Nothing can be as bad as that tennis guy ESPNU forced on us earlier in the season. I'll be heading to the game tonight for my one, and probably only, game of the year (unless we end up at the St. Paul regional). Rather sad, I think, since I only live 5 minutes away, but such are the consequences of athletic department's apathy/mismanagement toward hockey (ticket $, parking $, concession vendor change, banners, de-emphasis of band, etc). I guess I'm getting old...

The Big Ten hockey trophies are on display at Union South right now; that's pretty cool.

Also, I know how much everyone here loves Barry Alvarez, so I thought I'd mention that he was at the the game last night.

If you see him tonight, give him the one finger salute for me :p:D

FYI, the PBP guy has a Michigan slant. The PBP guy is Matt Shepherd, who is primarily the voice of Michigan basketball. He has done Michigan/MSU games on Fox Sports Detroit too.

Matt Shepard is the play-by-play voice of University of Michigan basketball, Eastern Michigan University football and the Detroit Lions Television Network. He can also be found on TV locally on Fox Sports Detroit and nationally on the Big Ten Network for college football and baseball. Sports jock on a small Detroit sports radio station.
