"@BadgerMHockey: Tonight's attendance is 7,022! Way to show #BadgerPride!"

Come on, Paul.

97% sure that was probably an intern running the account during the game. Way too many exclamation points to be Paul.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXVI: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Tolerate The BTHC

Even after the complete embarrassment of the first 5 minutes of the game, the Badgers did show some heart & dignity in rallying to salvage the tie (though loss the shoot-out). With that said, even though he didn't give up any more goals after the initial onslaught, Peterson was shaky all game. Not sure if there is still some emotional residual from Boston or some unreported physical issues, but something is not right with his game right now.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXVI: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Tolerate The BTHC

can someone explain to this old fan why tonight's game counts as a tie despite the shoot-out?

EDIT: Also...from Andy "Friday's attendance was announced as 7,022. Reports from the Kohl Center suggest that number is still likely inflated by a couple thousand."

I watched from the stream...seeing so many empty seats in the 100 sections...wow. 7,022 announced attendance? based on the camera angles and considering fans might move down after 1 if not 2 periods if people didn't show up to their seats, I'd guess 3,500-4,000 for actual attendance.

it's pathetic, actually it's worse than pathetic, I can't even describe how sad I am to see those gaping holes in the lower bowl with empty seats, but there are a million reasons for it and the University continues to ignore those reasons I guess...

Right. I thought the tone was pretty noticeably different. Bet someone told the intern to be positive, and boy did they deliver.

The shootout didn’t count toward either team’s record and was played to give Wisconsin some practice in the format because the Big Ten uses the competition in league play to award an extra point after tie games.

Apparently the shootout only took place in this non-conference game because the Badgers requested it prior to the weekend. Since the BI6 will use it in conference Eaves wanted the experience for the boys if it came up. LSSU graciously agreed. Label it an "unofficial" shootout. EDIT: I mean what badgerhawk said.

As far as the game goes, it's hard to watch how much Landon is fighting the puck. When that floater handcuffed him and ended up on the top of the net I thought we were really in big trouble again, and maybe we would have been if LSSU didn't go into a shell for the most part. 3rd and 4th lines really carried us through the middle of the game, so much so, that I was thinking at the time that the line numbers were flipped upside down. But that seems to bode well for the future. I certainly believe the top six are too talented to not get it going and they came on stronger in the third. Funny how when the guys in front of you are playing well and working hard, those juggled pucks and weak rebounds seem to bounce better and don't wind up in the back of your own net.

Still Landon's head has to get right. Big game for us tonight. With a road trip to Miami looming we need to show that the ship is turning around so we can get to sailing out of this valley and get back to climbing the **** mountain.

Agree on Peterson. Just fighting everything. I thought he was coming around the first part of the second, but after that one skipped off his glove, he basically went back to very shaky. I'll give him credit for not giving up another goal, after the first 5 minutes, but a lot of it was luck. He definitely didn't look good.

Any chance Miller gets a start tonight? He was pretty decent against BC?

Other thoughts: Was very impressed with both Besse and Zullinck. While the rest of the team was having pucks bounce off their stone sticks, these two could actually catch the puck, and passed very well. Besse made 3 passes out from behind the net to a guy in the slot, right on the tape, and we misfired. Sick goal by Zullnck (and Mesch!) in the SO, but was a little disappointed that Besse didn't make the lineup. Know he is a freshman, but he IS that skilled. Have to use him.

Good comeback by the guys last night. They didn't give up, and they really dominated the 3rd. LSSU was completely gassed with 10 min left. I'll give a LOT of credit to LSSU's goalie. Great glove!! Really was night and day watching him v. Petey.

Tell the guys the game starts at 6:50 tonight, just so they wake up a little bit early!

Pretty glad I was home sick and didn't go to the game. Listened and caught it on Wisconsin channel. My friends said attendance was less than NMU, which is pathetic.

The team better gets their heads out of their respective arses quick. Need wins against non conference opponents. Eaves conversation with posick after the game he was happy. Said first two goals were lucky and third was soft. You make your own luck. After being embarrassed in Boston you come out like that?

Going tonight so hopefully they play from the start

Definitely more than 4K actual attendance. Definitely. Being youth hockey weekend, there were actually a few noticeable groups in the upper level, which you never see on TV. The sides of the second level were reasonably full (compared to current crap, not years ago) on the sides. 7K is about right...do you really think 3 thousand people ate their tickets? Throw in the students, who are much more densely populated, too.

Just nitpicking, but there was that one-timer attempt on the doorstep that Besse whiffed on (or if he got a piece, it just deflected it to the corner boards). Among all the other "almost good plays" when they were trying to come back, it stuck out in my mind.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXVI: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Tolerate The BTHC

Perhaps another reason the 3 and 4 lines looked so good to me is that I believe Dahl and Meuer combined to go 24-6 on faceoffs. Not having to be chasing the puck 80% of the time makes life a lot easier.

I think Eaves was happy post game mostly because after the Boston Massacre, (btw- I insist that weekend be referenced like this from now on.) the first five minutes was everyone's worst nightmare coming true. That the boys didn't completely blow up and instead calmed down, got their skates under them and really took it to LSSU down the stretch was invaluable for the season. Going to be lots more adversity ahead and these guys need to know how to respond. Hats off to Kapalka for preserving the tie with some great work. The one where he stoned Mersch on the doorstep really stands out to me.

Interested to see if attendance is any better tonight.

In the short term, I don't think that their is anything that that the University can really do to get attendance up this season. The issue is that it has taken 5+ years to get to this point and it will take at least 5 years of CONSISTENT winning to get the fans back to a traditional level of 11k/game minimum. That means 5 years of at least 20+ (non-shootout) wins, first round home playoff series wins, and making the conference tournament championship game at least 2 times, the NCAA's at least 4 time and at least one F4 and likely require more like 10 years of consistent success (or getting lucky and winning the next two National Championships which, sadly, might be FAR more likely than consistently being actually good over a decade)

I think that the LACK of home playoff games and F5 appearances has REALLY hurt the perception of program as successful to casual fans, whereas the blown 3rd period leads and OT losses has really taken a toll on the more hardcore fans.

I agree on all of what you say and while I feel like that is what we should expect from the team and from the coaching staff, I don't know if they're capable of creating and sustaining success. It's up and down up and down, that's the track record.

It could help attendance as well (imo) if they allowed kids to be kids and let them have fun at the games by bringing in their signs and banners (and that would probably make the older fans happy as well), bring back the BLC for us older folks so we can have a beer and talk about the Granato's, the Hrkac circus and the old-timey stuff, and allowed for that to add to the atmosphere a bit.

Hey guys! There's not a disgraceful number of people here tonight!

Looks much better on TV as well. Not ideal but at least it is not a repeat of last night.

Yep. Decent crowd here tonight and we're handling this team as we should.
