Too late.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXVI: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Tolerate The BTHC

We get ice cream! Clap... Clap... Clap clap clap. :)

It's okay; I started several others. I think we got a lot of good ones in by the end of the game. It was as if tonight happened to make up for the past year or two. We may be less numerous this year, but we're still the Crease Creatures.

Great student crowd tonight. Good job.

Can't believe the LSSU coach didn't shake hands tonight with Eaves tonight. I haven't seen that before.

He didn't? What a sore loser.

Anyone know where I can find highlights from tonights game? I would have watched on wpt but I went to the pacer game tonight.

The what the */jaw dropped open look from Eaves after the LSSU coach walked away on TV was pretty funny. My guess is he thought the SHG at the end was tacky, but who cares.

In the end it doesn't matter, but how about they stop the shorty. It was a soft goal from their goalie and an effort plays by Kerdiles. Just never saw that happen before.

I was wondering what the look was for.....that look was totally awesome. He was at the women's game with his staff wandering around and he ate some nachos during the 3rd period. Perhaps they didn't agree with him or he was piissed the nacho cheese compartment is too small for the chip to fit. I'm guessing this is the last LSSU/UW tilt while these guys are still coaching these teams.

Their schedule sucks...play, bye, play, bye, play, bye......how are they supposed to get some momentum going? At least Rumpel get another week to heal.

Very encouraging game last night. Hopefully the team can hold onto that for a while and build something (which wouldn't hurt at the turnstiles).

Lots to comment on the discussions from Thursday and Friday, but its probably best not to belabor the point too much. Just accept that the Badger Men's Hockey program as we knew it is gone. It's been replaced by something that is something at least the likes of Ohio State would envy, but it is still about as relevant to the AD as our boxing program.

It's not gone. It just takes more effort. Sure, there happened lots of chanting points available all at once, but we put other student sections to shame last night.

Different note - I wonder why whoever runs the Wisconsin Badgers facebook page finds it so hard to mention this weekend's hockey games, even just once. You'd think 8-1 would be a pretty good advertisement.

I think the overall interest in hockey is cyclical and we are in a definite trough of interest right now. What would fix that? More consistent above average seasons from the team instead of going through its own peaks and valleys would certainly help. But no matter the case, it is going to be difficult to appeal as much to the masses with the behemoths of football and basketball out there and performing well for years on end. When hockey was in its hey day, it had no competition from these sports. Just bringing hockey back to a consistently successful level probably won't be enough to woo the masses though it would certainly help. As for me, I was in the student section from '99-'10 or so (undergrad + PhD). I was dismayed at the football-ification of the cheers over the years, but I could live with it. I could have still kept getting student tickets as a non-student but I didn't really like when they went to the voucher system. Nowadays when I consider forking out for 'adult' tickets, I weigh things like this concession debacle, the banner fiasco, the diminishment of the band's presence, the song and dance we were sold in the form of the BTHC (more games on TV!!!!!), the lack of promotion of hockey from the athletic department and the AD, and the lack of a reasonable discount for 300 level seats. Just an overall lack of respect and care for what the fan likes and wants, IMO.

I think if anyone has a reason/complaint/excuse/whatever as to why attendance is off it's pretty much legitimate if it's keeping you from attending. Winning still probably fixes 90% of it and I'd guess that the AD feels that 90% of whatever focus they have is directed at that in terms of facilities and the resources for recruiting and playing.
In other words, in regards to these various issues I can see the AD people saying something like "I see where you all have points but the fact is that we feel the single biggest thing we can do to increase fan participation is to have a winning program, and to that end we dedicate our resources to providing the tools necessary, i.e. top quality facilities, recruiting resources, and staff, as well as provide a top education to student athletes to ensure a winning program. "

Which can be further translated to: "Hey, we're all doing our job, you should just show up."

Which continues to be kind of frustrating.

It appeared that the LSSU coach didn't skip the handshake, but did say something to Eaves right as he did it and that's what caused Eaves' displeasure. That was the Twitter consensus, as well. Initially looked like he stiffed Eaves, but further discussion said this is what actually happened, fwiw.

That would be fine, if they didn't have so many sub-par seasons. By not winning games they are not doing their job (at least not as well as us fans have come to expect)

Right. I'm saying that ultimately that's where the real disconnect is. All the other issues --banners, BLC, ticket pricing, ...those are all legitimate complaints that folks have and are certainly understandable but they pretty much fall into the background if we're a top five program every year.

If dc points out a small issue like "why not get a mention on our fb page?" the response would be "Thanks for your input and you bring up a good point which we will try to address, but of course what we as an Athletic Department are really focused on is providing the best resources to create a winning program and we feel that doing so will resolve theses types of issues."

Which in itself is logical and probably correct... I think what I'm getting at is that from the AD's point of view the Athletic Department is doing a great job and if the team doesn't win consistently it's not their fault. "Geez! I mean look at the great facilities!"

The reality is, as you succinctly put it, by not winning they are not doing their job. To me, this disconnect of expectations is the real single issue that underlies everything else.

Or I could be way off base. Not really on my game this early in the season.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Vol. XXVI: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Tolerate The BTHC

Agreed. Students definitely did their job - best in quite some time. Especially enjoyed the Lake Inferior chant.

It helped that we had a "[not a state] State" team, a water-bottle-less goalie, 6+ goals, and a frustrated opponent congregating in the penalty box all in one night. It was definitely harder to force the positive energy on Friday, though the game became pretty freakin' exciting by the end despite the flat start.

I hope a lot of students there were not season ticket holders - it would have been a very fun introduction.
