WISCONSIN Hockey Vol. XXIV - Craziest Season Of All Time

Re: WISCONSIN Hockey Vol. XXIV - Craziest Season Of All Time

I think that beer was sold the last time I was at a game at the Coliseum. Maybe 05 WCHA playoffs? It was against UAA and I have photos from it with Robbie Earle among others. Anyway, pretty sure that beer was sold as it's off campus.

My guess is that beer will be sold this time too.

Unfortunately, I don't think that the Coliseum will be anything like it was. I'm guessing that the games won't sell very well as they weren't part of the season ticket package. At this point, what's going to drive sales? A chance to walk down memory lane? Doubt it.

My experience in going back has been to realize how much nicer the KC is. More comfortable, better sight lines (at least from my seats), better concourses, etc, etc, etc... BLASPHEMY ALERT: The Coliseum is a dump. Sure, I loved it back in the day, but the KC is simply better.

The atmosphere was certainly better back at the Coliseum, but that had a lot to do with factors that won't be instantly recreated by simply going back to that building, imho.

That year that we played UAA, the Friday and Saturday games were well attended as they were part of the season ticket package. The series went to a game 3 on Sunday and iirc, there were less than 2000 there as it was walk up sales only.

I'm predicting maybe 3-5k at each game. Hope I'm wrong, but I won't be going coz like I said, it's a dump, imho.

7k Friday and 8k on Saturday. SCSU will be #1 in the league whne they get here. Thats the draw.

I think you overestimate that's impact on our current fan base.

Hopefully, you are correct and I am wrong.

Okay, just can't deal with this ankle at the game on Friday.

4 tix - $80 or 2 tix - $40

Section 204 row A

Gopher fans need not even bother. I'll eat them first. :p

Seriously.

Re: WISCONSIN Hockey Vol. XXIV - Craziest Season Of All Time

They have noticed. I was discussing this with a freind who's knows someone who works for UW in the athletic dept. Shall I say "BEER GARDEN" may be in the future. He informed me they are discussing options to rectify the attendance. Whether that be beer, new coach etc, he could not elaborate. And yes he said they can make the Beer Garden happen despite NCAA rule about on campus facilities.

I've been lurking these forums since last spring, but I finally made an account just to say this — hearing that people in the athletic department are noticing and trying to fix the attendance issues makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside.

Welcome aboard WiscDC!

While beer and hockey go together like... well... Beer and everything else-- I'm not sure a beer garden does much for attendance, as personally, I've never run into a shortage of beer on Hockey Nights in Madison. Drinking in the Coliseum was like visiting your favorite dive bar; drinking in the Kohl equates to me more like drinking in Andy North's living room. The beer is nice but I'm always worried about spilling on his $30k gopher skin duvet. It would be another revenue stream though, which is fine.

Personally I'm for a 'Fridays with Phil' promotion. A Phil clone in every section to light a little fire under the too comfortable asses of the 'old people.'

Another long-time lurker coming out of the shadows here...

If you think the Athletic Department hasn't noticed the downward trend in attendance, take a look at what they adjusted in next year's Athletic Department budget

"$470,000 in less ticket revenue from men's hockey"

If you make some rough calculations of $20 per ticket, and 20 home contests each year that works out to 1,175 less fans they expect at each game for next years budget.

Maybe if the team actually played well consistently we wouldn't need any promotions? Just saying...this isn't minor league baseball.

I've had seasons tickets for 8 years, use to blog about the team and made a few road trips to get in extra viewing, and I'm finding it hard to motivate myself to go sometimes. Not friday though, I will bring as much hate as possible for those vermin in **** and **** colored uniforms on the opposite end of the ice.

Personally, I couldn't care less about a beer garden. I've just been afraid that the athletic department doesn't notice/care, or more realistically, will just take their fans for granted. (i.e. making no effort to ignite or even just maintain enthusiasm in the fan base.) Most people probably didn't think much of the "This Fall Belongs To Ball" bus driving around campus, which became a "Wisconsin Hockey - 50th year in the modern era" bus in the second semester. It drives on a campus route. Mainly students see it, not the general public. So why wouldn't they advertise Wisconsin Hockey when student season tickets were still on sale (especially considering that random drunk kids who don't give a rat's *** about the Badgers buy football tickets to watch the 2nd and 3rd quarters, so they sell out quickly)? Football didn't need that - it was a waste of ad money.

Hockey and basketball enthusiasm in the general student body are lower than you'd think. Football is a weekly event in the fall. But basketball and hockey? The athletic department fails to ignite any enthusiasm in the students. Look at the Wisconsin Badgers facebook page. This is one way casual fans subscribe to UW Badgers news, and they can go weeks without seeing even a mention of hockey. It seems small, but it's indicative of how out-of-touch the athletic department is with the fans, at least where students are concerned. Big hockey fans (like everyone on this board) have to go out and seek their news. Random people in Madison don't notice it.

The Wisconsin Hockey experience should really sell itself. That means getting butts in the seats (or better yet, in the air in front of the seats) is a priority. I know many people (other students) who went to 1 or 2 hockey games, and they want to come back. Some buy season tickets the next year, some just keep coming to more games. Buying someone else's student ticket doesn't affect attendance, but it does spread the Wisconsin Hockey brand. Obviously, it depends on the elasticity of demand, but I'd rather have more people at a lower price than fewer people at a higher price. Why are glass seats (or center-ice 200-level seats, whatever your preference) $24, while back row, obstructed-view seats are an amazing $4 less? Somewhere on the last thread, someone floated the idea of $10 300-level seats, which makes way more sense to me.

All in all, I like the idea that they want to maintain Wisconsin Hockey as this grand event, not just some extra thingy. Because it is a grand event!

I only wrote "Friday's with Phil" because I like alliteration.

Seriously, this is a brilliant idea! Anyone know if the athletic department has heard of this one yet?

Wait, you mean the number one determining factor in attendance changes in every spectator team sport ever? Don't be crazy.

Welcome aboard as well. That is very enlightening. I think the way things are going, projecting 1,175 less fans is too low.

Friday's with Phil is alliteration? How about Fantastic Phil Friday's?

Re: WISCONSIN Hockey Vol. XXIV - Craziest Season Of All Time

I think the Phil-billie in the opposite corner would be a better draw.

What if they worked together? Maybe that is what is ailing the team, these two guys are not working in concert to lift the supersitious forces from the ice.

From now on, I'm going to think of lifting superstitious forces when the Phil-billie makes everyone go "HEY!" (That is who you're calling the Phil-billie, right?)
