Re: WISCONSIN Hockey Vol. XXIV - Craziest Season Of All Time

Watching the Vancouver/Calgary game and to my surprise Ben Street is getting his name called out for a shot on goal. CongratS to Ben for getting the call to the NHL. He has put up some respectable numbers in the AHL.

BSU goalie gift wrapped two goals tonight for UW. Once again, not the greatest effort on Saturday night.

Update, Street's parents are on the TV.

Beat me to it. Was just gonna post this. Good for him.

Looks like Calgary is trying to make the 1 goal lead hold up. ALL the play in their zone.

The biter tied it. Flames are a pretty weak team, time to rebuild.

Re: WISCONSIN Hockey Vol. XXIV - Craziest Season Of All Time

The re-broadcasts on PBS stopped with football and basketball when the BTN was launched. They trickled to a halt over the ensuing years for hockey.

I remember there being articles about this at the time, but I don't remember exactly WHY they were stopping. Something to do with BTN.

But, but... we can see Purdue women's fencing!

This weekends games aren't being re-aired, but they've done a ton of games so far this year on tape-delay on the Wisconsin Channel.

Edit: Just went back and counted, 13 out of the 19 home games are being shown on tape-delay on public broadcasting.

Looks like if the game was being broadcast originally on Big Ten Network, they don't do the tape-delayed public broadcasting. Same when there is no live TV, they don't do a tape-delay.

At one point during the game, there was a contest on the scoreboard to guess the year. One of the clues given referred to former Badger goalie Kirk Daubenski.

Does it appear to anyone else that there is almost no physical play by this team? At times it looks like a no-checking league.

On a positive note, I thought Schulze played pretty well.

Ok...me being an optimist and all, I'm going to post something positive (not about the game or weekend...but about the program). As those that are subscribed to this thread know, I am a Chase Drake fan...mostly because he is from my home town. So, related to that it was really cool to hear Ron Leszczynski (yeah...I think I even spelled that correct) interviewed between the second and third period. Does anyone have a good place to read about these older teams? And a roster of all teams that lists their hometowns?

Is the Wisconsin Channel WPT-2?

Guess I haven't looked there...

'Five Golden Rings' by Mike Lucas and 'Shot and a Goal' by Bill Brophy might be a couple places to start.

Re: WISCONSIN Hockey Vol. XXIV - Craziest Season Of All Time

I grew up in the Chicago area to Wisconsin-native parents. My dad went to UW and my mom went to nursing school here in Madison.

My first exposure to UW hockey was watching the replay on PBS when visiting my grandparents in Reedsburg or Milwaukee. I'd be up after the rest of the family went to bed watching these great games and great teams in the late 70s and through the mid 80s.

Heck, as recently as 89 when I moved to Wisconsin (LaCrosse) and 93 when I moved to Madison, games weren't hardly ever shown live. The ONLY way to watch at home was on PBS.

I think that taking the games off has had an impact on the reinforcing of fandom. Same with football. I miss being able to re-watch the game.

As far as my "neighbors," don't worry about them. They probably hardly rememberme as I've been selling those seats to a buddy for about the past 5 years or so. I use them maybe once or twice a year, if at all. Have fun.

Dude, your section is BORING. No "let's go reds", "no 1 2 3 we want more", not even "sieving". One big issue is the fanbase is getting old and less rabib. I'm sure 20 yrs ago these folks were really into it, but now they just like to sit and watch. It's sad, but it's a reality. The students were good. I guy proposed to his gilrfriend and she accepted, that was cool.

The game was pretty even, which was disappointing. If the beaver goalie didn't assist on 2 UW goals, the game may end in a bad way. Those goals were literally "all your fault". The pp is as bad in person as on tv. The fans weren't negative when the pp was going, however, they tried to cheer them on positively and encourage them.

Someone posted earlier this team isn't very physical, and I agree after watching in person. Kerdiles had a nice hit along the bench, but he got pushed around a lot too.

The whole place is BORING outside of the student section.

But how was the VIEW? I love those seats for that.

I agree, if that goalie didn't gift wrap the 1st and 3rd goal UW most likely loses or ties this game. There were stretches in the 2nd and 3rd period that I could have taken a ten minute nap and not missed a thing and wouldn't have been woken up by any noise.

The PP was also tough to watch. We badly need a D man who can shoot off a pass.

It's the quiet ones you have to worry about. I'm sure there are some scary azz people in that section.

The guide on Time Warner shows Bemidji @ Wisconsin on the BTN at 9:30 tomorrow(Monday) morning. No info on which game it is.

You are assuming that PBS doesn't want to be showing the games on tape delay, when the truth of it that UW in conjunction with the BTN are likely not allowing PBS do that any longer. Same reason that they are never going to do a free internet stream, to much money (value?) exists, or at least the potential of money, for UW to give any broadcasts away for free to anyone.
That's it in a nutshell. As as soon as the BTN was announced, I knew those 10:35 PM tape-delays on WHA-TV were history. (Back in the day - here I go again - as soon as the game was over and 8,662 were trying to get out of the Coliseum parking lot, you would hit your favorite watering hole and watch the game you just left.)

By the way, I've never been so bored in my life watching hockey...seriously. I'm a huge fan, so I cannot imagine what a novice fan is thinking. I don't know what's going on; if I did, I'd be the head coach.

The Big Ten is allowing FSN to continue broadcasting Gopher games next season. Just the games not televised on the Big Ten Network though.

Fox is a minority stakeholder in the BTN. I also suspect that FSN is paying more to the Big Ten than WI Public Television would.
