Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XX - Growth Through Experience
I'm sorry but this is ridiculous...
A couple of players showed up at the hockey game (unrehearsed), and during a TV timeout of a border battle game they opened the gate and showed off a trophy they just brought home from winning a border battle game that fired up our crowd.
How on earth this can be construed as a bad thing is just beyond me. The athletic department is one. The players from the football and basketball and hockey teams are friends. Jordan Taylor and Jake Gardiner were roommates last year. They all support each other, and for the most part, when any of our athletic teams does well they are supported by fans of the other sports, and that's the way it should be.
I embarrassed at the jealousy, personally. I'd say the overwhelming majority of Badger hockey fans were excited when they saw the axe make an appearance.
Winning the axe isn't just a win for the football program. Hell it's not even just a win for the UW. That's a win for the Badger state, and something to be proud of.
A comment that came in response to svf's rant in the thread about the series with Minny was to note teams going onto the north end zone during football games. My thought: when is that ever a distraction in the game? No one in CR is ever going to be more interested in the women's crew team. Sadly, parading the perennially overrated football team at the KC is going to be more interesting to 80% of our fans than anything that happens on the ice at any given time.
Therefore, I see a huge difference between the two situations. Given the huge moneymaking power of football, I guess I understand enabling the many hockey fans who secretly wish they were at CR, but it still kind of just acts to reinforce the secondary/tertiary citizen status of they only revenue team on campus that wins titles.
I guess it makes me sad more than angry- since despite his conflict of interest, I can't blame Alvarez for encouraging this sort of environment.
