Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XX - Growth Through Experience

Lets Go DU is reporting that DU is in talks w/ UW to continue the rivalry after they both leave the WCHA next season. Most of the story is about DU btw. Not sure how much truth there is to this, but I would be excited for the continuation fo this rivalry. If UW playd DU and North Dakota regularly in non-conference that would be a very strong schedule and the two teams I would like to see every other year at the Kohl Center from the existing WCHA. Play Duluth and St Cloud or CC on occasion, who I like to see, and I would be a little happier about the BTHC.

I find this report difficult to believe because Minnesota is involved. The Gophers have a scheduling arrangement with Notre Dame, and I've heard they are working on one with BC and BU, but have heard literally nothing about DU until this. With its commitment to play the other MN teams, including the MN Cup, I am skeptical that they will continue to play DU with any regularity.

Hey guys, I'm working on a piece on the history of Michigan Hockey.

What was the name of wisconsin's first home barn? All I could find was information on the "modern era of wisconsin hockey" but I'm looking for their arena in the 20s-40s. Thought someone here might know.

I think if you go back far enough, the games were played outdoors on the frozen Lake Mendota.

Go to uwbadgers.com and try to find the e-mail for Paul Capobianco. He'll be your best source of information.

It would be good to play UND, DU, CC, MT and UMD (the old school WCHA teams) on a semi regular basis. I would not lose sleep if UW never played UNO, Kato, Bemiji or St. Cloud ever again.

Agreed, although CC and Tech don't do much more for me than SCSU.

Would love to still see Denver and Duluth (great place for a roadie) and especially the Sioux.

Paul would probably be the best source.

From what I can tell, they played on Lake Mendota at least up until the late 1920s, if not through the early 30s.

Also, when looking at Wisconsin-Michigan...those schools played the first American intercollegiate hockey game outside the United States when they played 3 up in Windsor, Ontario. Michigan won all three games by 1 goal (2-1, 1-0, 1-0).

Given the fact that MN and UW are involved I wonder if this would result in one game each against CC and DU, similar to how the showcase rotated with MSU and UMI, I can't see both UW and UMN committing a pair of NC games to DU every year considering that MN has significant commitments to the other MN schools on an annual basis.

I genuinely doubt Minnesota is actually involved. We have heard all kinds of details on scheduling arrangements they are working on, and DU has never been mentioned.

now this is a **** impressive fact re: Justin Schultz's season thusfar

"A defenseman, Justin Schultz would lead 53 of the 57 other NCAA Division I teams in scoring. Just one of the great facts supporting his candidacy. "

On a team with a more consistent offensive production, his numbers would be even more outstanding. Sadly, I doubt the majority of the voters are note going to be able to look past where the badgers finished in the standings.

agreed. and now that I'm thinking of it, has a Hobey winner ever come from a non-NCAA qualifier?

given the type of season Schultz has had I'd posit he deserves the Hobey even more than Reinprecht did way back when

Matt Carle won it in '06. Denver was eliminated in the first round of the WCHA Tournament.
Brian Holzinger won it in '95, and Bowling Green did not make the NCAAs.
Chris Marinucci won it in '94, and Duluth did not make the NCAAs.

It has happened, but not very often. That being said, I'm in the camp that Schultz is the best player in college hockey right now.

Interesting. He is 11th in the country in scoring, and .25 pts/game better than any other defenseman. I'm not sure if he'll win either, but he should at least make the Hat Trick, since I agree w/ a Sioux fan (yikes!) that he is the best in the counry this season. Doing some quick research, he has points in 23 of 32 games this season.

If this season has been disappointing, his play has not, and just like having Ryan McDonagh or Jamie McBain for a junior season or Blake Geoffrion for his senior season, it was special to have him out there. Another Badger headed to the NHL in short order.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XX - Growth Through Experience

Holy ****, great game so far. Zengerle, wow! Now that was very #27-like on that goal to go up 4-0.

John Turturro may show up in the UW vs. Rats thread tomorrow

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XX - Growth Through Experience

I wonder if Wisconsin has enough talent on the roster.

There's no denying 1st Star, Schultz, Barnes, Rumpel and Mersch have it, but this was a one line performance. The other 3 lines forechecked decently, possessed the puck well, played great d, passed solid, but did not generate a ton of chances, and if you don't generate scoring chances you won't win a ton of games. That being said, the team has been gutted by early departures and with the talent coming in next year, they will battle for home ice next year and the cup the year after. The future is bright.

1st Star's coast to coast was awesome. He wasn't even flying up the ice, he weaving around looking constantly to pass, then as the rodent d fell asleep, be abused them and Patterson. On Merch's goal, he no looked the pass to McCabe, it was pretty sweet.

You stay up all night? Get some sleep. Anther Eaves team that wakes late in the year. Really looking forward to the future. Keep it going tonight.

Everything went their way. That wont happen again. They need to grind this one out . Playing for their lives. Minny is not.

Tough to duplicate an effort like that with any team.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XX - Growth Through Experience

First three goals were great effort/grinding goals, though the Mersch goal was direct product of great passing. Then Zengerle's goal was a thing of beauty.

They brought the energy all game long, which may have been a by-product of Eaves who looked dialed-in all game long. He's intense as it is, but watching him on the bench during the game, you wouldn't have known who was dominating the play.

The other thing I noticed is how calm Rumpel looked in net. The last goal sucked as the Badgers couldn't get it out of the zone and they set up a nice re-direction for their lone goal. Rumpel deserved better.

I fully expect the Gophers to play a lot better tonight, but if the Badgers can play their game, there is no reason that can't get the sweep. Love to see them peaking at this point of the year.
