Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XX - Growth Through Experience

that's a pretty snide remark Chuck. settle down a bit. people can have opinions and sometimes they don't agree with you or your assessment. deal with it.

EDIT - also, the quote was "IMPACT" player per class, and yes Zengerle and McCabe are the ones who fit that bill. no others in the frosh or soph class. that would seem pretty accurate.

I've just heard you repeat this talent thing over, and over, and over again like there is zero upside to anyone on this team and it gets sickening at times. It's just not true.

The Badgers just lost 7 "IMACT" players to the pro's before they graduated over the past two seasons. You think it's a coincidence that Eaves has scaled-back his recruiting to maybe 1 or 2 what you would classify as "IMACT" players per class who might leave early, and instead brought in some talented 4 year type kids?

Who's going to make more of a difference, a four year Tyler Barnes, or a 1 year Kyle Turris?

It's not a cut and dry process. You need both types...to an extent.

Guys like Mersch and Barnes and LaBate are right on pace where they should be in their freshman and sophomore seasons and they are progressing right on pace. All three will likely eclipse the 25 point mark this season. Give them another year and those guys are 30-40 point guys. I mean I think back to watching Mersch last fall as a gangly freshman, and watching him now and it's leaps and bounds the strides that the kid has made. I can't wait to watch him in another year. Yet guys like him are written off like they are the second coming of Tom Bardis (no offense Tom).

Running a live blog tonight if anyone is watching from home and feels like chatting about the game as it's happening. Anything to change the mojo.

fair enough. I'd rather hear polemics or opinions like this straight away. makes the conversation better

Lurker here,

I enjoy reading certain posters take, on this I tend to agree with Chuck. Steering clear of those 1-2 year guys is a pretty good idea in todays college hockey, not entirely but longevity is a must. I personally think the Badgers will be alright next year. When your "team" has a bad season so does your coaching staff, Eaves and his staff will hit the chalk boards and ice pretty hard, theres plenty of talent on that roster year in and year out. I wouldn't worry to much about next year.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XX - Growth Through Experience

Agreed great win. Gives a frustrated fan a glimpse of what next year could be like. Mersch is a beast in down low, but could someone get that guys some wheels over the summer....

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XX - Growth Through Experience

Not a bad way to go out.

Very good game, in fact. Jekyll and Hyde this weekend. See what happens when you can move the puck?

I'm not sure it was that jekyll and hyde...I thought the Badgers played pretty well on Friday night, they just didn't receive the desired result.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XX - Growth Through Experience

So, he's not entitled to an opinion, or allowed to vent his frustrations? And when did he say he didn't support his team, win or lose? Maybe he just likes to be honest about the situation. If you don't like to hear what he has to say, maybe it's you who should "do something else with your time".

J Dubbs I'm wondering based on your last snipe if the one you support with Chicago origin really supports the team win or lose. Solo, who much do you contribute with season tickets and your butt in the seats here year in year out. (Win or lose)

You call it honest. The points have been heard and taken to the point of redundancy.

J Dubbs stick to the Minny threads. Solo how was last night on your TV set?

You got me there. This guy is good :)

- did you miss my post about the victory?

-Jdubbs can post where he wants just like you, unlike you however he's not thin-skinned

- I have season tickets and my family has had season tickets since 1984 (yes, I remember watching Mike Richter, CUJO, Scott Mellanby, Tony Granato et al, that sort of set that bar of expectations) so don't try the 1upsmanship bull**** w/me; our family also contributes heavily to the badger fund, if that floats your boat. so how do YOU contribute? actually I don't care. don't answer that.

- if you measure fandom by whether you choose not to criticize a team when they're awful then you should maybe not lurk on message boards (did you similarly get bent out of shape with criticism of Jeff Sauer?).

- this is Division #1 big-time hockey, and with large budgets and a 6 ncaa champ history expectations are set and set high.

if you don't like opposing opinions then make an argument and try to persuade, it sure beats saying "I don't like your opinion why don't you just leave" and "I'm a bigger fan than you" ... I mean how old are you?

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XX - Growth Through Experience

Was there enough talent on the roster last night Solo :D Just messin' with ya man.

what I really noticed last night that I hadn't seen in a while was the overall enthusiasm on the team, especially on the first couple of goals (Woods for sure) it looked to me like the guys were having fun and perhaps exorcising some demons as well.

yes, they looked good last night:)

From my perspective, most of the issues I've seen in below-average Badger teams the last few years have had to do with puck possession and puck movement. In my eyes, that's easily the biggest contributor to offensive flow and what separates a Badger team that can score goals to one that cannot.

Friday was a game where there was not a lot of smooth passing, and any time we did maintain possession, the Badgers were kept up against the boards without much hope of getting the puck inside. Yesterday was different, and I think the proof was in the goals/scoring opportunities that were presented.

In general, I agree with you. Although there were still enough opportunities on Friday night where Wisconsin could have won that game. Wisconsin peed down their leg on a few wide open looks and turned the puck over that led to two goals.

The biggest issue with this Badger team, IMHO, is that they are not yet a unified team, they don't have that cohesive chemistry on a consistent enough basis (and it shows with the results on the ice). They are to reactive to the situation and not anticipatory (particularly in the offensive zone) and that comes with experience of playing together. I was always hoping that thing would have "clicked" for the boys earlier in the season and they could have started to get the results that would have given them the confidence that they needed going into the off season/next season.

Hard to disagree with anything you've said here.

I think one thing that I know frustrates me, and I'm sure others too is that this team shows flashes of brilliance. They can go out and work a team like Denver, or Minnesota...but can't put it together consistently enough. Their time will come. It won't be this year, but it will come.

I have to agree about the improvement. I'd add a few players to your list. I think Brendan Woods has come a long way, and I'm actually excited about him in the coming seasons. Might be a new favorite player in the making there. Also, Keegan Meuer. He is never going to be a superstar, but the kid works hard and I think when you add in talent like Kedirles and Zulinick (sorry if I spelled either wrong) next season, the Badgers are going to benefit from having a checking line as experienced as Ryan Little/Keegan Meuer/someone else. And that someone else could be Jefferson Dahl, since center could be a busy position next year w/ Zulinick joining and Derek Lee hopefully healthy all year (fingers crossed). Meuer has 7 goals this season, Dahl has a few, Little has scored before, but they are three of the most intense and defensive forwards on the team.

This freshman class has a lot of talent, they have just had to carry too much of a load this season, but I think that pays off down the road.

As for Mersch, he could still use some skating lessons, but he is much improved in that aspect from last season.
