Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XX - Growth Through Experience

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XX - Growth Through Experience

The stand up old people chant has gotten a little old. They used to do it around the one minute mark, but it's gone to the two and sometimes almost the three minute mark. I stand up when I feel motivated to by the events on the ice, not when some kids who are here now and will be gone within the next couple of years tell me to.

So there!

Honestly, I still cringe when I hear that chant, I still wish that it had been "Stand up Badgers" instead.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XX - Growth Through Experience

Odd. I have season tickets for both nights and I didn't think last night stood out at all, either good or bad. And it definitely wasn't louder for the Mites that the Badgers. Bottom line is you don't get to dictate how others choose to enjoy the game. I almost never stand for the students anymore. If I chanted "sit down, young people" at the start of the game, would they be obligated to obey? I'm glad they're there, I'm glad they bring so much energy, but I buy my tickets, I'll enjoy the game my way, if you don't mind. Well, even if you do, I guess.

The standing was at a critical juncture, kind of like standing in the 9th inning @ MP when Ax is on for the save, so it made sense to do it. You can certainly enjoy the game anyway you would like, I'm just use to a crowd in general that gets into the game at critical junctures or is to motivated to get loud on thier own or by the play of the team, neither of which I saw much of Saturday night. If Hallucination would have been there she'd have got up and walked out in protest. When the students fire up "let's go badgers", no one anywhwere close to us followed them/us. It was pathetic. The UW crowd is getting more and more like the DU crowds every year, the only difference is they are eating caviar and drinking champange. IMHO, whoever said the crowd was just as loud for the mites is as it was for any point of the game other than the last minute just plain wrong. I can see if you go to a lot of games, you probably don't pay that close attention to details like that, and that's totally understadable. This was our annual single trip to Badger Mecca, so I really try and soak every little detail in.

So any men's fans going to the fill the bowl event?

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XX - Growth Through Experience

I also will be going to Fill the Bowl, but I go to many of their games every year. Even at regular prices, it's a great deal at $5/adult, $2 for UW students/seniors/kids 17&under and the parking lot next to Kohl is usually free. Plus season tickets can be had for $60/year for adults. Not sure if that'll change with the new arena, but probably won't change much if at all.

For those going to Fill the Bowl, I highly recommend getting tickets in advance. UW is a little inconsistent in how many ticket windows they open to deal with the walk-up traffic. Sometimes it's no big deal and sometimes there is a 20+ minute wait in line.

We've had season tickets since they started selling them, and it's actually only $30 for a season ticket! Hands down the best deal in town.

Agreed! I've had season tix for the last 4 years, try to make as many games as possible.

As for the Men's team, a solid weekend. Still a lot of room for improvement, but on any night this team can beat anyone, if that were consistent, watch out yet this season WCHA! Schultz is such a special player, 5th in the country in scoring and 0.43 pts/game better than any other defenseman.

Re: roll out the barrel, they could sing that all game long as far as I'm concerned. I like it!

I considered getting them this year, but I probably only get to 4-5 per year, and 1 is fill the bowl. I'd go to more games, but I've got an hr drive one way. Definately do the print at home tickets, although they charge you a convience fee, which I feel is a rip off, because I'm saving the UW money by not having them print them and pay someone to give them to me, but enough griping already.

This weekend's men's match-up isn't as menacing as in the past, but UW still is on the road and needs to coax some points out of the weekend to keep the slim chances of home ice alive. I can't see more that a .500 record the rest of the way over the last 10 games.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XX - Growth Through Experience

You're right..I spent $60 because I bought a pair of season tickets..doh! A great deal either way even if my math isn't great.

The conflict between the Big Ten Playoffs (in 2014) and the State High School Basketball chamionship in the Kohl Center was a topic this morning on WIBA.

Can anyone tell me the propsed structure of the Big Ten Playoffs?

I'll respond when I get old, but I'm only 56 so they ain't referring to me.

My understanding is the current format would have the playoffs at the home of the Big 10 regular season champion. I think the week previous it would be 3 vs 6 and 4 vs 5 on the higher seeds home ice best of 3, then those winners join the 1 and 2 teams at the #1 team's home rink.

So if the Badgers win the Big 10, they host, and you might not know this until the last weekend of the regular season.

There is a lot wrong w/ this idea. Travel for one, and the non-uniform size of rinks the other. If this was really a popular event, which I don't see it being, there wouldn't be enough room if Michigan hosted compared to UW, or um, or OSU. The WCHA has many faults, but the Final Five is a great because it is something you can plan for way in advance, and it is always in the same place.

I've been to every single WCHA Final Four/Five since they started them in 1988, and we may keep going even after the Badgers leave the conference.

Thanks for the info.

I went once a few years back, and plan to go to the last two. Not sure I'll go to the "new" WCHA version in the future, but if the NCHC has their tourney in St Paul and I have to drive to Columbus to watch the Badgers play in teh B10, I might just go watch the NCHC instead.

This is correct. The regular-season champion hosts the semifinals and championship game at its home rink. The four lowest seeds play a best-of-three series at the home of the higher seed to advance to the semi-finals.

Logistically, it is a nightmare for the fans and is a problem for UW and OSU in that they have to reserve multipurpose arenas for 2 weekends where no games will be played on campus. I like that the regular season champion is rewarded with a home game (or more importantly isn't punished by having to play a defacto away game against a lower seed). As a fan I HATE that it makes it near impossible to regularly attend because it makes planning near impossible, as someone who would have to travel to ANY of the 6 locations, I will likely not be attending any of the championships until they move to a predetermined site. They have not announced how the tickets to the semi finals and finals will be distributed, because if they are included in the season ticket packages like the schools do now for the 1st round playoff games (which requires you to request a refund for the tickets if the games are not held) as opposed to an equal allotment of tickets to all the schools (I'd be fine with an additional allotment going to the #1 seed) that will effectively prevent any opposing fans from being able to attend which is grossly unfair to the fans of the other three schools in the tournament.

I can't see the NCHC tournament staying at the X without MN to drive sales of the ticket packages. Last year the number of tickets sold wasn't terrible, but the actual attendance was bad. I just see 10-12k as the top end of what they can expect at the current ticket prices given that they will be competing directly with the B10 championship for either actual attendance if MN hosts or the TV broadcasts on BTN.

This format is bad. I'd like to see all 6 teams at a predetermined semi neutral site (non-campus) like Minneapolis, Milwaukee/Green Bay, Chicago, Detroit, Pittsburgh or Columbus. You could rotate through each location every 6 yrs on the same weekend, thus you can plan ahead. I'm shocked they went the route they did considering BB and FB are that way.

I suspect that every sport other than Football and Basketball are held on on-campus locations. I hope that they move it to a non-campus location after these first two years. Upside for UW, the team should be good for those first two years and may get an opportunity to host. They will keep the first round a best of three in order to maximize games played and revenue collected.

I'd love it if they held it at the United Center annually. Central location, tons of alums from all schools in the city and maybe NCAA hockey could gain some traction in 2nd city after 5-6 years of this???
