Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XX - Growth Through Experience
As Eaves noted this week hockey is a funny game. Scoring chances were even Friday and Wisconsin wins 4-0. Saturday, UW out-chances MSU by a 2/1 margin but loses 2-0 (+ empty net).
As for Notre Dame, I'm not sure why you're surprised they are good (If 13-8-3 counts as good). What did they lose (From a team that was in the Frozen Four)?
F-Ryan Guentzel-39 pts (Now in Germany)
F-Calle Ridderwall-25 pts (Now in the AHL)
F-Ben Ryan-25 pts (Now in AHL/ECHL)
D-Joe Lavin-17 pts (Now in AHL)
What did Wisconsin lose off an average team last year?
F-Podge Turnbull-19 pts (Now in ECHL)
F-Patrick Johnson-19 pts (Now in ECHL)
F-Sean Dolan-16 pts (Now in AHL)
D-Craig Johnson-6 pts (out of hockey)
G-Brett Bennett
G-Scott Gudmandson
F-Craig Smith-43 pts (Now in NHL)
F-Jordy Murray-26 pts (Now in Switzerland)
D-Jake Gardiner-40 pts (Now in NHL)
F-Cody Strang-USHL All-Star (didn't qualify academically)
Quick math
Wisconsin loses:
6 seniors, 3 underclassmen, and a recruit off an average team.
169 points, + 2 goaltenders, + whatever Strang would have done.
Notre Dame loses:
4 seniors off a Frozen Four team. 0 underclassmen.
106 points
*Next two seasons are the Badgers years. I said it 2 years ago (& continue to say it), 12-13 and 13-14 could be very special seasons for the Badgers.
it's true UW has never swept Mankato (aside - I don't think 06 or 10 teams success or lack thereof in the schedule has anything to do with the current version, as those teams weren't as desperate for points, whereas today's team needs every point it can get and should be playing each shift like it, also UW and Kato were both much better then) and while I don't expect a sweep at this point in the season anymore (esp on the road), at some point they're going to have to do just that in order to get even the slightest consideration. Alaska and Bemidji offer the next best opportunities. If they sweep both and split the rest they end up w/18 wins. 18-20 I think is a bubble team but we'll see.
...those Notre Dame games have really left an impression on me, especially that last one where they outclassed minnesota for basically 57 minutes, even in the speed department. comparing that team to UW this year is reveals quite a bit and that's where my mentions of talent come in (that and remembering how Zent/Schier/Rafalski/Moore/Fairchild/McDonald et all in the past kicked #$$ right out of the box and comparing that to more current teams)
