Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XX - Growth Through Experience

If you're 23, you are old to the ones who currently control the student section. For the record, I'm 42.

It was a dig as your attitude is that of an old man in that you are pining for the good old days when things were done correctly. We all do it on certain things. Just poking you a bit but either way, those days are gone. For better or worse.

If you go to a game and try to lead them, please let me know ahead of time so I can grab some popcorn. :)

ah, no prob. I am just a crank today. and...for the record I'm 39 which I suppose means i"m old to an 18-21 college kid

but I WILL let ya know if I can get a group together to try the old cheers

I was never that impressed by Piskula, didnt consider him a particularly good defenseman. Good skating ability, but seemed to be always out of position when on the ice.

My memory is admittedly crap but I don't remember him being noticeably out of position on a consistent basis. Maybe you're right, I just honestly don't remember that. I do remember how well he skated, and thought he was a plus puck mover. If you can skate, and move the puck well you're going to get chances at the next level and I'm glad he's getting his. I'm sure at this point he's matured and is more disciplined defensively as well.

He was a very good skater and puck mover, but I think that playing next to Gilbert for two seasons covered a lot of his defensive issues. I think that it took 4 seasons to make it to the NHL shows that something defensively was an issue.

I'm happy he's getting a change and hope that he makes the most of it.

****! 23?! One year out and I am already old...

But then again, I was bitter with the student section through most of my four years there anyway. I really hated students adding dick on to the end of every chant, thinking that it was clever. I do think it had a lot to do with the change in the distribution of tickets. I was in the student section many times before actually being a student and when seniority determined your seat, the first tier was always leading the student section. Now, with it like football ticket distribution, any freshman can sit in the first tier, without knowing anything about our student section traditions. Because of this, many good traditions were lost and some poor ones (IMO) were started over the last four years. I do not know how many times I had to explain to people chanting freshman drummer that on the fifth goal, our drummer always plays the sieve beat at different rhythms throughout the chant.

It was always nice when the alumni band was around during x-mas and a few other games because they would play many of the old songs that fell by the wayside over the years due to various reasons.

I'm 26, but I feel much older because I do get a little old man-like about the student section. I miss the cheeky and fun stuff, like using "Total Eclipse of the Heart" to try to get goalies to turn around. Adding "dick" to most cheers and replacing "that's impossible!" "that's inconceivable" with the whole "girlfriend's inflatable" bit isn't terribly clever and just comes off like we have SCSU's admission standards.

As for Piskula, there was also that injury that kept him out of the title run, which may alter our memories of how much talent he did have.

I think it's fair to say that he just needed to piece a few things together in the AHL, but the talent was always there.

I thought Kyle Klubertanz was the one who Gilbert made look good, because after Gilbert graduated Kluby regressed quickly into "fearful to watch during any shift." He was a short handed goal helping machine his senior year, and not in the good way.

Piskula was paired with Gilbert, Gilbert would have made me or you look good. I think that Kluby's problem was fear of making mistakes, which resulted in him making mistakes, he just didn't seem to handle the pressure of being the PP QB very well.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XX - Growth Through Experience

I already wrote this in the UAH thread, but I met Blake Geoffrion at the UAH vs. UNO game tonight at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville. I walked up to him after the game and introduced myself as a Gopher fan. I told him I enjoyed watching him play in college, but loved watching him play in the pros (I am a Preds fan). Seemed like a very nice/classy guy.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XX - Growth Through Experience

I wonder why he went back. I thought he did alright with Hamilton last year.

(more money for him in Sweden? I could see that)

Yes...I don't know the exact figures for his deal but he can basically make like 60k with Hamilton with a low chance at a shot at the NHL. Or he can play overseas and get six digits tax free.

While here, he came to my son's team practice once and was great with the kids.

Our seats on Friday are in the section where the UW parents are given tickets and his dad sat next to us often over the years that Blake was here. His dad was incredibly friendly and gracious.

I'm not comfortable with bugging people, so I never asked for anything from pops, but he was always asking how my kid's season was going, telling us about his other boys (even before they were at UAH), volunteering Blake to come to more of our practices, wondering if my kids wanted to go down and see the locker room etc...

I'm guessing that the apple didn't fall far from the tree in this instance.

Not that this pertains to UW hockey, but why was the game played in Nashville? I see in the USCHO scoreboard that attendence was 957 at the Bridgestone Arena.

I don't think what he makes overseas is tax free, but he will still be making more.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XX - Growth Through Experience

It is tax free, and they often pay for your housing and transportation. My cousin played overseas for 5 years.

You are still required to pay US federal income tax on your income. It may not be taxed by the nation where you play (by treaty with the US) but that doesn't make it tax free.

IRS said:
If you are a U.S. citizen or resident alien living or traveling outside the United States, you generally are required to file income tax returns, estate tax returns, and gift tax returns and pay estimated tax in the same way as those residing in the United States.

I'll have to talk to him, but that wasn't the impression I got. I believe there was a way around that. I'll see him at Christmas time and will ask him.

But that isn't to say that US tax code is clear or easy to understand. Their are income exemptions that can also apply, I am far from an expert on US tax law and foreign income reporting.
