Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XX - Growth Through Experience
I've looked at this website many times over the past few seasons, and he has the Badgers at a 30% chance of getting home ice at the current time. Obviously this is completely stats based, and as Chuck pointed out the Badgers do get a big boost coming back for sure by the New Year w/ Lee and McCabe, and doesn't account for other team's injuries and what not. From a purely mathematical stand point, the Badgers have a lot of work to do.
The advantage is the 28-30 point threshold is nearly independent of what other teams do. If you can get to over 0.500 in league play that is theoretically good enough for home ice (depending on how the points are distributed among the teams). The Badgers DO have an uphill climb to get to that 0.500 level, and how close they get will depend on how they do on the road. If they can't get the points at Mankato or BSU they will need to secure home ice, winning a first round playoff series on the road will be nearly impossible. If they can get 12/16 points available in home games, and 8/16 points available on the road they will end with 29 points and be around where they need to be to get home ice. Can they become a 0.750 team at home and a 0.500 team on the road over the rest of the season, doubtful since it gives the team VERY little margin for error but anything is possible. The team has the talent to do it, they just need to put all the pieces together.
