Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XVIII - Belief in a Better Tomorrow

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XVIII - Belief in a Better Tomorrow

Hey. I'm sure Sioux fans will take this rivalry loss harder that Badger fans--in the long run. The Michigan rivalry will heat up fast. But it's true we all have to move on and just enjoy this great game and the opponents we do play.

But let's not get soft just yet. There are a few more fights left to fight. The Badgers are going to get an old fashioned hostile and abusive arsewhoopin when they go to GF in mid January. Aftet that, I think you all will all be happy to be playing the likes of Penn State and . . . who--Indiana?

Nobody's getting soft.

It's just that after the sweep, it's clear that your team isn't on our level and it's hard to get into a rivalry when one of the teams is vastly inferior.

BTW, I think that deep down you secretly like the Badgers. ;)

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XVIII - Belief in a Better Tomorrow

no, I do not. that's the point. and not only that, as I said when my dad and I started going to games in 84 I don't recall anyone talking about or bemoaning the loss of Michigan, MSU or Notre Dame as conference mates. what I DO recall is an abject hatred for Minnesota, North Dakota and a pretty healthy respect for UMD.

and that led me to believe and still does, there really wasn't much of a rivalry between Michigan and UW, MSU and UW.

and let's face it, there is not 1 single poster here who has come out and said they remember those "rivalries" and they were just as good or intense as the Sioux/Rats rivalries. not 1 person
While I certainly see your point and respect your opinion on the matter (that hurts to say). I as a Gopher fan do consider Michigan a rival. Most of that built through playoff match ups, but a rival no less.

Certainly I will miss beating North Dakota and St. Cloud, but I really have no interest in CC, DU, MSUM, UNO, BSU, etc.

Plus I know in MN case they want to keep playing the state teams like Duluth.

you're probably right with Minnesota and Michigan because I do recall them meeting in the NCAA's several times over the last 20 years. for Wisconsin w/the exception of I think 94, and maybe 00, I don't recall a Michigan/UW match-up outside of the CHS

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XVIII - Belief in a Better Tomorrow

I remember one that was pretty bad that he fanned on that led to a turnover. Hard to get on his case playing with the hand injury that he has. As it is, he's out there as a defensive forward anyway, any offense he provides is a bonus, but I get your point.

I didn't mean to be too hard on him. I guess I was more surprised and/or disappointed that on 2-3 occasions he had a wide open look (and no d-men w/in about 4 feet of him) and fanned on it. it happens.

I consider Michigan a rival as well. Maybe it's because I'm a huge Badger baseketball and football fan too I don't know. More likely due to watching that 1992 Frozen Four semi-final against Michigan on VHS like 100 times when I was a little kid.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XVIII - Belief in a Better Tomorrow

Question: Why did Faulkner not play for UNO last night? Havn't been on the hockey scene this year.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XVIII - Belief in a Better Tomorrow

Coach Blais said he wanted him to get some experience in a hostile environment. I was surprised he left him in after 3 goals on 3 shots.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XVIII - Belief in a Better Tomorrow

good game tonight for UW.

again Woods and Meuer are really playing well, gaining confidence. Zengerle and Barnes are beasts. Chase Drake looked pretty decent in his first ever game. Paape looks very solid as well.

I'm getting more optimistic (maybe not post-season dreams for this year) for next year with this group looking like they *might* become something special if they stay together

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XVIII - Belief in a Better Tomorrow

I truly believe this team is a year or two away from a National Championship type run.

definitely what I'm saying. I think next year could be great. 2 years (w/out too many major defections) and look the eff out!

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XVIII - Belief in a Better Tomorrow

You could say the same thing about more than a few teams in the WCHA. Wisconsin is definitely one of them.

Yep...we graduate only Springer off this years team, and are likely to obviously lose Schultz. Ramage COULD go as well.

But we lose no forwards, and bring in a couple blue chip kids....I really, really like where this ship is headed.

JDUBBS is right as well...Minnesota is in a similar situation to us. They are going to be a major factor the next few years.

absolutely.

and yes JDUBBS is right Minnesota is coming back, and quick. Also, Michigan Tech and I'm very happy about that. good for them, good for NCAA hockey. I hope Pearson brings Tech a title, just not at the expense of the UW!

Couldn't Zengerle be a possible defection also? Or not?

On the Minnesota front, it's been such a nice reprieve having them suck. Obviously, I'll need to mentally prepare myself for the night sweats, irregular heartbeat and loose stools that come with having to worry about THEM winning another title.

I just hope the nervous twitch doesn't come back...

It was bound to happen sooner or later, and everyone east of the St. Croix and west of the Red will be dealing with the twitches, so you can reach out if you feel the need. You're on your own with the loose stools.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XVIII - Belief in a Better Tomorrow

Zengerle will be a 4 year guy, count on it.

I wouldn't bet on this. You may be right, but I'm always surprised when guys (like Steve Reinprecht and Tom Gilbert) stay all 4 years. I'm putting Zengerle in that camp and hoping he also stays.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XVIII - Belief in a Better Tomorrow

as a gopher fan thats watched Wisconsin play twice this season.. i was thinking as well that the badgers are not going to make a big run this year- but the next couple years you guys will be a very good team. roster is setting up nicely for a strong finish in the wcha next year and a strong start to the big ten the next.

and ramage is very fun to watch.

It still seems like sacrilege to mention MTU in the same breath... but you're right. When all the talk 2 weeks ago was about how young this WI team is, an inspection of the rosters showed very similar numbers of underclassmen. Like WI, many of Tech's best players are freshmen and the only real significant losses we'll see to graduation in the next 2 years are Olson, Baker & Robinson. And Seigo.

It's possible but very unlikely. Don't get me wrong, I love the way he plays and he's going to be an awesome college player, but his pro career upside is limited. I'm pretty sure he realizes he's a long shot to ever play in the NHL, and he loves Madison so why not use up your 4 years?
