And then....they started the game from the beginning. Credit to the team for battling back to tie it late. But Eaves' teams at home in OT are terrible.

There were a few early chances with passes across the crease that should have been easy tap-ins, but were missed.

Battling back was great and I give them credit for it, but they didn't play with urgency (to my eyes) until they were up against it.

To be expected with a young team.

Very disappointing wrap-around to end it. Didn't notice who the d pairing was, but that's not a good goal to give up.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XVIII - Belief in a Better Tomorrow

Shame not to get the tie. It's a young team, at least we saw some good fight in them when they were down.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XVIII - Belief in a Better Tomorrow

brief thoughts...

whomever was on the ice for that wrap-around goal for NMU should be working OT in practice this week. all 5 of them. inexcusable.

positives - daly. didn't hear his name more than once all game which means he did his job when he was out there. LaBate played great hockey for a kid just out of HS. Zengerle made his usual great passes. Schultz controlled play when he "could". Simo/Faust seemed to play well.

negatives - I was and am expecting Mersch/Barnes/Zengerle as a line to control the O-zone. they didn't really do that at any point tonight. Barnes and Mersch...where were you?
Schultz...this has nothing to do with his play, but the team's. the team cannot constantly look for #6 to carry the team, they passed to him at awkward times and made him the focal point moreso than he needs to be. he's already a target and passing to him constantly is going to lead to turnovers or odd-man rushes because there's no d-man in the NHL, let alone NCAA that can accept the responsibility that the young guys were trying to put on him.

I didn't see enough of Navin to form an opinion on how he played.

Peterson. great job.

Another thought on Justin Schultz. I saw some real slumped shoulders reactions from him tonight and maybe 1-2 other d-men that I hadn't seen in years past. I don't know if Schultz was trying to teach on the bench when he was chirping at another guy or if he was just ****ed (and I'm sure he feels the pressure to carry the team) off at the young kids making unforced errors.

all in all it was great to see the team come back, but man is that film study going to be intense.

this team is going to get a whole lot better by x-mas break and I hope that leads them to a top 5 WCHA finish.

No kidding, interviewing fans? ***. I did not check the score b4 it started on tv, so getting to stay up until 11:30 only to watch them lose with 3 seconds in ot was sucky.

Petersen played well, but on the last goal he did not allow the shooter to make the first move and going down too early left the wrap around wide open, though he managed to get across to try and stop it. The NM guy was coming in at a low angle, so he just could have stood there hugging the near post, waiting for the shot.

Lee whiffed the easiest backdoor shot on the pp he's going to get all yr in the first period.

I think at forward Barnes and 1st Star were the best forwards on the ice for UW overall.

There were too many blind passes, passes to nowhere and passes to NM, but they just aren't automatic on the systems yet and the game is going a littler faster than many are used to.

There were a lot of instances where they finished plays gliding and not skating through, whether it be to a puck or to a NM player.

Overall, I wasn't shocked in a good or bad way.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XVIII - Belief in a Better Tomorrow

great game by Zengerle. wow. shooting when he's got the chances, dancing w/the puck when he needs to. He could be Reinprecht #2 by the end of the year

LaBate is going to be a hell of a player. great game.

dahl, Mersch, Barnes all showed up to play and kicked some. just an overall solid game for such a young team

they'll have to grow up in a hurry now as Nodak and Omaha are right around the corner

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XVIII - Belief in a Better Tomorrow

Lee could have scored at least 3 goals this last weekend. Saturdat night in the 2nd period a NM d whiffed on a pass going d to d and the puck stopped about 6 ft dead center of goal and Lee botched it. I think he was trying to go with the backhand, but I wish he would have hammered it into the upper corner, or at least tried. It would have been just like warm ups. LaBate did score his goal that way.

1-1 is a decent start, 2 solid comebacks, solid goalie play (no softies) and a good amount of shots both games. They did allow over 30 shots Saturday after allowing under 20 Friday.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XVIII - Belief in a Better Tomorrow

I didn't see the opener but a few thoughts from Saturday.

-Thought Rumpel looked pretty solid. Seemed calm out there, didn't give up any really bad goals. Excited for his future.
-Really happy with the way Zengerle shot the puck. Eight shots on goal are a lot, and that's a good sign.
-Schultz is going to be a much better player if he takes what is given to him this year instead of forcing things.
-The PP (from what I heard) looked bad Friday. Saturday I thought they had some nice opportunities.
-Need to bear down on faceoffs. Lost the faceoff battle on Saturday night.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XVIII - Belief in a Better Tomorrow

According to Baggott, here's the lines:
Line 1 - left winger Michael Mersch, center Mark Zengerle and right winger Tyler Barne
Line 2 - Joseph LaBate at left wing with center Derek Lee and right winger Gavin Hartzog;
Line 3 - left winger Ryan Little with center Jefferson Dahl and right winger Sean Little
Line 4 - left winger Brendan Woods with center Keegan Meuer and right winger Brad Navin.

I like line 2 quite a bit, there's a lot of scoring punch on that line. Line 4 is pretty green, but getting them some experience is important. No Jason Clark? Bummer.

Same D as Saturday, same goalie rotation.

Surprised not to see Paape in the lineup, thought he looked really good. Super surprised Jason Clark is going to go the first two weekends of the year without seeing the ice.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey: Vol. XVIII - Belief in a Better Tomorrow

Clark has to be injury related. Might be a case where he is cleared physically to play, but not where he needs to be at as far as game shape.

I'm guessing you're right in terms of game shape. He missed the entire off season with those surgeries.

agreed, Paape looked great both games. is he not making the trip or is it possible he's going and plays game #2?

Paape and Daly are the extras making the trip. I would expect to see Paape in there somewhere on Saturday for sure. Daly is a tossup. Probably depends on how Springer plays Friday.
