Re: Wisconsin Hockey, Vol II: Rebuild, Refresh, and Renew!

For reference, 10K would mean a whole level would have had nothing but empty seats. 13K-14K were actually there.
Well, I did say up to 12k. :p Here is the opening faceoff, and the ends were worse than the sides.

Soooo are you guys open to being swept next weekend or...

Re: Wisconsin Hockey, Vol II: Rebuild, Refresh, and Renew!

Maybe since you're not absolutely brutal anymore, you won't resort to cheap shots and hurt our players this year. We'll try not to outscore you 13-2 in your own building again.

Nice preemptive strike...

Bo, you won't recognize us; we skate, we attack, we don't sit back. The Badgers forwards will find it easier to undress your D than a drunk co-ed. ;)

Re: Wisconsin Hockey, Vol II: Rebuild, Refresh, and Renew!

It's hard for your fans to find time to whine about reffing when they're too busy cheering every time you guys get the puck in the neutral zone on a 1 on 3. Or do your fans know more about hockey than people from Mississippi now?

Do the rodents play enough D to create a 1 on 3? I think not.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey, Vol II: Rebuild, Refresh, and Renew!

Heading into the semester break, here is where the numbers are:
Still clinging to that single point in the poll, receiving votes, 26th
RPI down to 29
PWR stays at 28
Team O, 3.44 - 9th
Team D, 3.56 - 52nd
PP, 23/100 23.00% - 6th
PK, 70/81 86.4% - 11th

OK, semester break is behind us, last bye week of the season is behind us, let's buckle up and get ready for a LOT of hockey!

Here is where things stand going into the Gophers visiting Madison.
Someone is still giving us some love with a single point in the poll, receiving votes, 27th
RPI up to 27
PWR up to 26
Team O, 3.61 - 6th
Team D, 3.28 - 48th
PP, 25/110 22.73% - 10th
PK, 76/88 86.4% - 11th

Minnesota
7th in the poll
8th in RPI
8th in PWR
Team O, 3.80 - 5th
Team D, 2.75 - 26th
PP, 22/92 23.91% - 5th
PK, 70/83 84.3 - 25th

Both teams can score, in bunches. MN has 7 games with 5 or more goals, UW has 8.
The big difference is going to be stopping the other team. Which G is going to play for UW, and how well will the D do in front of him.

I think I heard in an interview that the team in general realized that they had an issue with coming out on fire on Fridays and then not being able to match that on Saturdays. Maybe going with a G rotation can help solve some of that...

Should be a good weekend, looking forward to 2 great games.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey, Vol II: Rebuild, Refresh, and Renew!

Goaltending....Berry is coming back to earth a bit and Jurusik is who we think he is. Obviously Bloomquist isn't an answer either. G2O may have to dig around to find another option. It's not all their fault the D numbers are so bad, but I don't think Rumpel or Petersen would have those numbers. I think this team can make some noise nationally, it just appears that the goaltending may hold them back. I hope both can improve and make me look stupider than normal.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey, Vol II: Rebuild, Refresh, and Renew!

Ticket sales are looking strong going into the weekend.

As of Tuesday morning they have sold just under 11k for Friday and almost 13k for Saturday.

As a quick reminder, here is how the capacity figures break down
100 – 5,389
200 – 4,204
300 – 4,622
ADA – 274
Suites – approx 576
Clubs – approx 209
Total hockey capacity of roughly 15,274

Looking at the website, there are less than 30 seats left in the 100 and 200 sections for Saturday

Frickin ticket office / UW vultures: Ridiculous $14 order "charge" and $2.50 per ticket fee added to face value of $24. That is $34 a ticket, not $24 when you buy two. I should have tried scalping two extra tickets. Out of sight costs for a "normal" family and when you are hurting on attendance, even if that isn't the case this weekend.

Yeah, it's definitely better to buy in person when possible. Unfortunately, that's not an easy way to go for a lot of people if they want to buy in advance.

The order charge tacked on to the whole thing (not the per-ticket fee) should just be 10 bucks, though. ("Just" compared to the $14 you cited...not compared to what would be reasonable.)

Seeing the way the fees add up reminds me of how much better it would be if there were more of a tiered pricing system, with cheaper options up high.

Well I ordered one women's ticket, so that is the other $4. There I go thinking I can save money buying them together. not so much.

Next time I will just scalp which doesn't help the ticket office but will save me money.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey, Vol II: Rebuild, Refresh, and Renew!

I expect a strong student section. Even at the worst of times, there's been good energy at the games against the gophers. Keep in mind, however, that this week is week one of the rebuilding of the student section. (Not when the new staff was hired, and not in October.) I've gone into it before, so I won't write a wall of text about these issues (unless anyone really wants me to ramble--err, I mean, expand), but an entire cycle of students was lost (and the switch happened in just about one or two years), and most people don't know what college hockey is. We finally get that second half boost, and newbies will (finally) get a taste of what Wisconsin Badgers Hockey is supposed to be like.

I expect that I'll be hearing chants started behind me, which is a relief. That's how I tend to measure the overall energy/strength of the student section these days. :D Meanwhile, the grizzled veterans - perhaps "crazy people" is a better term - of the south end of the arena will maintain the established stuff, and hopefully the newbies will feel like we felt at first, in the sense that you feel socially awkward for not joining every chant and making a ton of noise. (Edit: I want to emphasize that due to numbers and recent attitudes (or lack thereof) toward the hockey program, this is difficult these days, and is often driven by a just a few seniors, a bunch of super-seniors, and just as many alumni who want to keep this stuff going.)

Some people have some new stuff in the works that has been received well, but that's an ongoing process that will take a while, even in a best case scenario. I'm hoping a healthy dose of alumni decide to come back and scoop up student tickets this weekend.

All that said, as far as the $5 ticket offer goes, you guys are unfortunately framing it differently than how any newbies will see it. Remember, most people don't know what college hockey is. They haven't seen Wisconsin-Minnesota hockey. They don't know who Luke Kunin is, even if he's realistically better in his sport than Sam Dekker, Russell Wilson, or Melvin Gordon. I don't mean that in the "please like my sport" way. Rather, I mean it as an illustration of both the deficiency in promotion of the program and the completely different view of college hockey among most students - even hockey fans - compared to the two other "major" sports on campus. It's also an illustration of how differently most sports fans see this program compared to any UW fans reading this post. My understanding is all the stuff on the walls of the dorms is basketball stuff...they don't have the faintest idea of what this team might have to offer. I wish I could say I'm exaggerating for rhetorical purposes. If anything, I tend to understate these issues.

Two years ago to this day, MM had his best metaphor yet,

"Much like puppies in a box they always want to get out, when they do something good you want to scratch them on the ear,Next thing you know they’re crapping on the carpet. We crapped on the carpet tonight."
