Wisconsin Hockey Part 3: Just win, baby!

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 3: Just win, baby!

If McD and Stepan stay, I hope this starts a trend just not at UW but with the WCHA as a whole. I remember watching or listening to a game and the announcer said that past teammates are telling current Badgers that the AHL bus rides aren't the life they had expected. I would have to think Turris is one of those people giving feedback to current players.

I do understand that some players feel they need to take the money while it's there like Piskula and Earl, but for McD and Stepan that money isn't going anywhere it will be waiting for them when they are ready to make the jump directly to the NHL.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 3: Just win, baby!

Several thoughts, first on the Big Chill...the pricing is right and the opponent is right. Had we lined up Minnesota (even after the WCHA nixed it as a conference game...we had the choice to select them as a nonconference game) and made tickets $15 & $10 from the get go, we would have sold many more tickets early and often for Camp Randall. Michigan has the pricing right if your goal is massive attendance and the correct opponent.

On guys staying because others before them have not had things work out as planned...I agree. Skille and Turris are about on par with Stepan in that Step's is a good to very good college player, but in honesty has not achieved a level where he is dominant at the college level. Skille and Turris have gotten a taste of life in the NHL, but both are riding buses and while I love my hometown of Rockford and the Icehogs are nice to watch, playing in front of 15K at the Kohl is WAY different then 5 or 6K in the Metro Center. Likewise McBain was every bit as good as both Smith and McDonagh were this year, yet he spent almost the entire season in the A. There is an arguement that playing in the A and the professional schedule and better competition speeds the development process, but at the end of the day the only development a lot of these kids need is physically. A kid like Turris had the hands and vision to play in the NHL as a 16 year old, his body just was not ready.

On the lineup projections, I'm not ready to give up on Brendan Smith or Goloubef being back. If McDonagh can come back, I don't see how either of those two can not too. Goloubef is vastly underappreciated and a solid player, but I still don't see him in the NHL this fall so like many of the recent early departures...he is picking Kohl Center and 15K enviornment or AHL 6-8K enviornement. Smith has the example of Geoffrion returning for a senior year and walking away with the Hobey and a nice Frozen Four run for the team.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 3: Just win, baby!

anybody know whats holding up B.Smith, Goloubef and McDonagh from signing, i thought it was pretty much a sure thing these 3 would be gone already????

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 3: Just win, baby!

what???? I know there are rumors of McDonagh staying for his Sr season becasue of the NYR depth on defense he likely wouldn't play in the show next year but i thought B. Smith and Goloubef would have signed by now sense neither are coming back next year, i guess if there AHL clubs are not in the playoffs there is no rush...

Also of note are Wisconsin’s captains for the 2010-11 campaign. Defenseman Ryan McDonagh, who served as one of the team’s tri-captains this past season, will hold the duty by himself next season. Joining McDonagh in the leadership corps will be forward Derek Stepan, who will serve as assistant captain. Stepan finished this past season as the Badgers’ leading scorer, and also captained Team USA to a gold medal at the 2010 IIHF World Junior Championship. A second assistant captain is expected to be named at a later time.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 3: Just win, baby!

I've already stated part of my case in the "Big Chill" thread, and it absolutely bears repeating.

It definately would seem that Michigan is going to be putting in a lot more effort into promoting their event than UW/Barry did, and from the looks of things, it's going to pay off for them.

they (Michigan) sure are. but that's because Barry Alvarez could care less about Wisconsin hockey. So of course, UW did the minimum it could do in terms of ads, attention to detail (ahem, ticket prices and opponent)

It's sad and pathetic but true. UW hockey has been and always will be the most successful of the big 4, oops 3 at UW...

6 NCAA rings compared to how many for football?

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 3: Just win, baby!

By the way, just found out that Derek Stepan was on the Pipeline show Tuesday and he sure sounded like a kid that is coming back for next season. Very, very convincing.

Skip the first 5 minutes. Steps called in late.

I've listened to them in the past; pretty informative about up & coming players in Canada and the US. Cool interview with Steps and I wrote to tell them so. Guy Flaming wrote back and told me to tell my friends about the show, so whoever are my friends, listen to the show (although I know some already do).

Currently, they are trying to get Admiral Asskicker on the air. It's The Pipeline Show from Edmonton (CFRN) on Tuesday nights 8-10 PM CDT.

Click on the link Chuck posted above for Step's interview, then navigate the site.

No kidding. There is just no teaching that boy. :(
I was mostly kidding, but my God, ".......anybody know whats holding up B.Smith, Goloubef and McDonagh from signing...."

The answer is NOBODY. It's not like we're wondering what's holding up a recruit from committing. The guy disappears (where was he to trash talk the chowderheads), and this is one of his first posts in a while?

C'mon 14. I'm going to say you're better than that, but c'mon.

Sorry boys, I've had better weeks....TGIF!

Dont forget that the bouncey ball team has no NCAA championships. The best they have ever gotten is a trip to the final four.
Its a shame that the hockey programs dont get the respect they deserve.
