Wisconsin Hockey Part 3: Just win, baby!

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 3: Just win, baby!

College Hockey News reporting that Badgers assistant coach Mark Osiecki is a finalist for the Ohio State job. This could be tragic for the Badger program.

I don't think it will be tragic. Head coaches like to see their proteges advance to head coaching positions, and Osiecki is a tremendous coach who is more than ready for a team of his own. UW will fill his spot with another talented coach, and the Badgers will remain an elite program.

That said, I know how you feel if Osiecki gets the job. Denver hasn't been able to advance in the NCAA tournament since Seth Appert left to be head coach at RPI, and the influence of assistants on team perforamance at this level is vastly under-reported. Appert was a huge piece of the puzzle when DU was winning NCAA titles, and I have no doubts that they still miss him.

I will also be applying for Oz's job although I haven't been contacted for the other opening yet. They must still be reviewing resumes.

You better grow a goat and bend your nose!

This WILL be tragic if Oz leaves as well as Patrick. Now you'll be looking for 2 coaches and trying to keep up with recruiting. Scary time for Badger fans.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 3: Just win, baby!

From Brad Schlossman's (UND sportswriter) Twitter:

Ryan McDonagh named captain for UW for next season. Does this mean he's coming back?

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 3: Just win, baby!

While I like the news of letters for McDonagh and Stepan and the underlying meaning that the probability of their return is higher then I suspected ever possible (especially with McDonagh), like with McDonagh and Geoffrion last Summer, I'll believe it when I see it on opening weekend in October. Keeping those two along with Goloubef & Gardiner would be huge.

Still a ton of offense lost in the 7 forwards that ran out of eligibility, but you start with an awesome D corp again and fewer questions in goal. Get a couple of the incoming frosh forwards to be solid contributors immediately (actually not that big of a stretch in that we do bring in a couple older kids that should transition physically easier then younger frosh...main suspects would be Barnes, Dahl, & Zengelre) & have a couple guys produce with an expanded role and more ice time (thinking Lee and Turnbull could be those guys) and you have a squad that is solidly in the mix for home ice in the playoffs and capable of bcak to back top 3 finishes in the conference.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 3: Just win, baby!

If McDonagh and Stepan return I think UW could end up with another chance at Top 3 WCHA which means anything can happen next season as far as post-season aspirations

suddenly the D-core is
McDonagh-Schultz
Gardiner-Ramage
Simonelli-C. Johnson

w/Chase Drake, R Little, and E Springer in the wings or rotating in/out of 3rd pairing

Stepan-Smith-Murray
Zengerle-Barnes-Lee
Turbull-Dolan-Clark
Johnson-Dahl-Mersch

S. Little

I must be missing someone?

Meuer.

Also, IF, and that's still a big IF we can keep McD, I see no need to break him and Gardiner up. Keep them as our #1 shut down pairing. Lock up Ramer and Schultzy together and Simonelli and Little/Johnson/Drake/Springer.

McDonagh-Gardiner
Ramage-Schultz
Simonelli-Johnson
Little-Sprigner
Drake

good point. I really like the looks of that D-Core line-up if McD stays.

If he leaves it would suck, but at least the bright side would be C. Johnson, Little, and Springer have spent a lot of time under Oseicki's instruction by now.

Wasn't Pavs named captain before he left or am I remembering that wrong?

He was named to be an alternate for the upcoming season but Pav's situation is different than Stepan's and McDonaghs.

Pavelski planned on coming back when he accepted the alternate captains role for the next season. He planned on coming back all summer. Late in the summer, (July 14th) San Jose stepped up to the plate and made him an offer he couldn't refuse. As a 7th round draft pick, the ability to earn a Rookie Max contract is something that's hard to pass up. He was also coming off a National Championship.

McDonagh and Stepan on the other hand, being first and second round draft picks don't have to worry about this. They will get max deals no matter when they leave school so they aren't that worried about capitalizing on money.

Just some food for thought.

Pav's was also going to leave some significant money on the table because of the changes in the CBA after the lockout with the rollback in the rookie max and the limits on the max signing bonus that can be given.

Good points. I knew that was a huge factor when Suter signed his deal but didn't remember that from Pav's situation.

Suter signed going into the lockout because of the uncertainty of what the CBA would look like as a result of all the labor strife.

Pav's was grandfathered in under the old CBA but only for a short period and at the end of that summer he would have had to follow the rules in the new CBA and not the old CBA. IIRC, the biggest difference had to do with the maximum allowed signing bonus that was decreased from 30% to 10% of the contracts total value.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 3: Just win, baby!

By the way, just found out that Derek Stepan was on the Pipeline show Tuesday and he sure sounded like a kid that is coming back for next season. Very, very convincing.

Skip the first 5 minutes. Steps called in late.

I hope Barry is taking notice of what's going on with the Michigan- Michigan State outdoor game.

I've already stated part of my case in the "Big Chill" thread, and it absolutely bears repeating.

It definately would seem that Michigan is going to be putting in a lot more effort into promoting their event than UW/Barry did, and from the looks of things, it's going to pay off for them.
