Wisconsin Hockey Part 3: Just win, baby!

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 3: Just win, baby!

That is the full roster. Note, he is the 8th defenseman. You can only suit up 6. I thought you were asking if he was going to play. Which the answer is, in my opinon...not a lot if at all this season. He's still on the roster.

Ooops. Makes perfect sense...I didn't look close enough to notice it was the 4th pairing.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 3: Just win, baby!

I thought I was pessimistic...wow.

if this team goes 4 years without an NCAA berth Eaves will be shown the door. I don't think UW goes 4 years out of the NCAA's, in fact if they go 2 consecutive years w/out an NCAA berth that would be a major disappointment, and the more I think about it it would be surprising...

I wouldn't really be suprised if they didn't make the NCAA's the next two years. They lose so much scoring and then having a mediocre class coming in doesn't put my mind at ease. Scoring is going to be a problem again and I have a good feeling you are going to see Eaves going back to trapping, which I have no problem with if that will win games. Next year they will most likely lose Stepan(if not this year) and Gardiner and on paper the 2011 class(so far) looks worse than the mediocre 2010 class, especially at the foward position. So I don't have my hopes up there.
2012 has a nice class shaping up so far, but the starting goaltender will either be a freshman or a former walk-on so there's a lot of uncertaintiy there as well.

Also I heard Geoffrin blew out his knee tonight. That kinda sucks since I thought he had a great shot of making the big club on opening day.

Mediocre class? Hardly.

Mark Zengerle led the BCHL in scoring. Barnes finished 9th in the USHL in scoring. Dahl led Youngstown in scoring. Clark will be a top 4 round draft pick. Simonelli is an alternate captain for the USA Under 18 National Team and is playing on the top pairing in the U18 World Championships. Mersch is young but has gobs of talent and Little and Drake are role players.

That is a SOLID class. You can definitely see the recruiting strategy shift from trying to land one and done's to landing great 4 year players. I like it.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 3: Just win, baby!

Mark Zengerle = Tyler Bozak...at least I hope.

You mention he'll be around longer than Heatley and Turris combined, but I wouldn't be so sure - if he has a good first couple years (around 30+ points) and gets NHL offers like Bozak did, I'm sure he'll be gone. Nothing wrong with that, I just don't expect him to be a 4-year guy.

I have to completely agree w/ Chuck. I think the 2010 class is going to be the backbone of UW in the coming seasons. I don't need to rehash what Chuck stated, but that forward group is going to be good in the long run. Even Sean Little is a nice 3rd/4th line grinder for the future, someone like Ben Grotting. I like the way he plays, he doesn't have super talent, but whenever I've gone to GB to see the Gamblers he gives it his all each shift.

I think Dahl and Mersch are undervalued, Dahl lead a bad Youngstown team in scoring, if he added some muscle this season to go w/ his natural talent, I think he'll surprise next season. I'm not saying he is going to score 20 goals or anything like that, but someone to count on every night to be in the lineup.

As for Dman, yes Simonelli and Drake are underwhelming, but only in comparison to what the Badgers have brought in the last 3 seasons. That likely won't happen ever again, not for the Badgers, not for any other NCAA team, to have 5 1st or 2nd round picks, and a guy like Ramage who will go 3rd to 5th this year on the blue line at one time all season. Simonelli will be a good 4 year blue liner who will play every game in his career and be a leader. Drake needs some work, but he'll be fine.

I think the 2011 class will be a good one too, especially if some of the USHL forwards progress well next season.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 3: Just win, baby!

And as for the team not being good for the next four years, that is foolish talk.

Other teams across the NCAA's lose talent too, Denver lost a ton this season, the gophers suck right now (which is fun to watch). I think Duluth, St Cloud and North Dakota will jump ahead of the Badgers next season, but no reason they can't make the NCAA tourney and be in the running for the MacNaughton again.

I think the 2010 and 2011 classes will be a solid base that will keep this program strong. Eaves has done really well this year in a) not over recruiting on marginal recruits and b) landing some more top end NCAA talent. Guys like McCabe, Clark, Kierdles, etc, instead of loading up on Strang's, Paape's, etc.

This might not hold every year, but the last few seasons, by having openings on the roster and some schollie money available, the Badgers have landed some nice late recruits. John Ramage last season, Jason Clark this season and maybe even Ryan Walters yet (or Max Gardiner if he doesn't like being pushed back by tDon's over recruiting ways).

I'm giving the future of Badger hockey some credit, my tune might change if 4 dman leave early and Derek Stepan signs w/ the Rangers on October 1st or soemthing.

I hope you don't mean Thompson. He will never be our starter...

Tennessean says sprained ankle. Out for the next game, re-evaluated after that, if Milwaukee wins. So nothing that should hurt him next year, thank goodness.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 3: Just win, baby!

Wow I didn't think my rambling of the badgers not making the NCAA playoffs in 4 years would spark some talk.

There are people on this blog that know ALOT more than I do when it comes to the new recruits and their potential. But like I said I hope I am wrong I think we might have a chance next season but after that we don't have a proven goalie after BB and SG leave the program. I pray that freshman we pick up is as good as people are saying he is otherwise I think it will take any newbie a year or even two years to get use to the college level. I don't care if we have the best defensive core if we don't have a goalie that can stop the shots we won't be in the NCAA playoffs for the next 4 years.

Also I heard another assistant coach left to go to Cornell....is this true?

One of the basketball Assistants may get the Head Coach job at Cornell...

As for the hockey team, I think they may have a tough time at forward next season (8 Freshmen forwards on the roster out of 15, and that's if Stepan stays), but the defense should be decent as will the goaltender position. In 2011 the forwards should be better as instead of 8 Freshmen forwards they'll have 8 Sophomore forwards, but goaltending will be the question. By 2012 when the big class of forwards become Juniors, and with what is looking like a really good recruiting class the Badgers should have the potential to make some noise. Seems like they'll be fine on defense no matter what happens as there's a continuous stream of high-end players lined up for the future and lots of capable seasoned veterans as well.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 3: Just win, baby!

Interesting article about some former Badgers who have moved on and found success in the AHL and NHL: http://www.uwbadgers.com/sports/m-hockey/spec-rel/042010aaa.html
Kyle Klubertanz is playing in the playoff finals of the Swedish Elitserien for Djurgardens IF. They're tied with HV71 after two games, and I have absolutely no idea where to find out how well he's playing. At least he doesn't have any Finns on his team... so in Sweden, that must be good news, right?

Sadly, the other side of the coin is that its rough being a Badger alumnus today:

Bamm Bamm had a rough day on his ankle, his team is down 1-3 to the Chicago Wolves.

Chris Chelios is up 3-1 to Milwaukee. But he lives, works and is from Chicago. Chicago. The city smells like a ****ing urinal. The entire **** city, from Chinatown to Little Italy to Wrigleyville. If not a urinal, then definately a sewage treatment plant. Except for Millenium Park, which is pretty cool.

Adam Burish and Davis Drewiske have yet to see the ice in the playoffs.

Brian Elliott just got shelled tonight, but at least he's a trooper.

Robbie Earl plays for Minnesota. Out of the playoffs.

Rene Borque plays for Calgary. Out of the playoffs.

Brad Winchester plays for St. Louis. Out of the playoffs and lives in a place that likes Budweiser.

Tom Gilbert plays for Edmonton. His middle name is not Gretzky or Messier. Out of the playoffs.

Steven Reinprecht plays for Florida. Does it really matter if he's in the playoffs?

Joe Pavelski and Dany Heatley play for the San Jose Sharks. They are in the playoffs. For now. Let's not kid ourselves here.

(This entire post was in jest, so... take it easy)

Well....6 so far to get us to 14. Probably end up with 7 to get us to 15.

Zengerle, Dahl, Barnes, Clark, Little, Mersch

Sorry for the mistake, you're correct at 6 so far and probably 7 to bring the total number of forwards to 15..

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 3: Just win, baby!

I don't understand why chicago hasn't played burish yet, they need that grittyness an edge, they are playing very very soft right now. I think its time for chicago to get back to playing gritty like last years playoffs and Burish would be a good way to start that...

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 3: Just win, baby!

College Hockey News reporting that Badgers assistant coach Mark Osiecki is a finalist for the Ohio State job. This could be tragic for the Badger program.
