There's a lot of overlap with the NHL 10 soundtrack. Maybe take a look there?

Ok, I'll pose this question. Would you be willing to see ticket prices for all events go up $2-$3 if that meant it would raise enough money for said project?
It kind of seems like everyone always wants more, more, more; but most people dont want to cough up the money to make it happen.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 2 - No Silly Eaves-isms, Just Win The Title!

In all fairness, the vast majority of the other buildings being put up on campus are academic buildings. Most of these receive funding from our large research funding and other donors. I think it is only fair to judge athletic buildings with other athletic buildings or other funding ventures of the athletic department.

Hit the nail on the head... Athletic department budget is not one and the same with the University budget.

Yes.

Well, I would - but let's remember that it's only a little dough.

$2 * and average of, say, 12,000 per game, at 18 games a season (conservatively) is 432k per season.

Plus, UW needs 2 million more to get to the minimum to start construction - they'll need a lot more to pay for the whole thing.

It's certainly something to consider, but that fee would be around for a long time and you'd still need to get more donors.

What I was trying to say that the ticket price for ALL athletic events would go up $2-$3.
The only problem with that is that it might open a Pandora's box in that the different sports might start fighting over who gets what they want first.

Yeah, that's not going to happen.

First of all, only three sports matter as far as the turnstiles go - football, hockey, basketball. A 2-3 dollar surcharge on other events would be a 40%-60% increase in the ticket price.

Volleyball tickets are $5. Soccer? Five bucks. Wrestling? Five bucks. And there are numerous discounts for youth groups, other cross-promotions, etc.

Increase tickets that much and you'd begin to seriously impact attendance in those sports.

Why even bother. I'm sure the Dane County Arena is a real selling point for recruits.

My question is why don't they practice at the Shell? My son's peewee team does from time to time so I'm sure the schedule could be arranged and that is one nice piece of ice.

The ice surface at the Dane County Arena is probably one of the best ice surfaces in the state. They do a lot of work to keep the ice in great shape. Also, it does look pretty sweet with the banners of each player hanging around the rink. Besides those two things it's a dump.

I think they practice at the DCA because of the size of the ice sheet. I could be completely wrong though.

They don't have any locker rooms there for the men's team, and they've have to travel across town to the KC for weights, training, etc. They at least have that equipment out at the DCA. Plus, the rink at the Shell is 200 x 85. They do practice there sometimes prior to playing on an NHL ice surface.

The problems with the practice facility are numerous - 1, there's no single location. 2, because there isn't a single location, that means they're constantly traveling not just for ice time, but for weights and trainers, etc. 3, the team is living out of at least two different lockerrooms. 4, ice time availability isn't the greatest - the Coliseum will use the Arena for other events.

So, that's the burden to the team. Financially, it also means that UW has to lease out space at the Coliseum. Their current lease expires in 2014, meaning they have to get started on this thing pretty quick to have it ready to go by the time that lease expires. There's also the logistics involved in using the KC for 4 separate teams - by having a dedicated facility for women's games, they can reduce the number of changeovers needed at the big arena between hockey and basketball - nevermind the opportunity of actually making some money on women's hockey (or at least lessening the losses) because of reduced operating expenses on a smaller rink.

Basically, this is a large, up-front capital investment that will pay significant finacial dividends for UW down the road in terms of operational expenses.

I agree with that. 100%.

The men's team did practice there last week to get use to a smaller ice sheet. I saw many of the guys on there mopeds half dressed in there gear with there bags on there back heading to the shell. Thats a sad state of affairs for a program as successful as ours.

Just get Heater, Rafalski and Pav to sign a big donation check and be done with it.

You better be talking about just the practice rink and not the Colliseum Ice. Because that might be the worst ice surfaces in the state.

Well, we don't know how much they have already donated. We've already raised 6 million in donations so obviously some of our NHL guys have stepped up to some extent. We know for sure that Burish has donated because he was quoted in the paper as being ****ed off that this project is on the shelf right now.
