After a pair of 5-2 victories over Michigan Tech last weekend, the No. 3 Wisconsin men's hockey team has clinched home ice for the opening round of the conference tournament. The best-of-three series is slated for March 12 and 13, with a game three on March 14 if necessary.
The Badgers currently stand alone in second place in the WCHA. Since Denver has already clinched the McNaughton Cup, three points at Minnesota this weekend would solidify a second-place finish in one of the nation's top conferences.
Wisconsin can finish no worse than fourth in the conference when the regular season ends.
Since the top five finishers in the conference are guaranteed opening-home series in the conference playoffs, the Badgers look forward to welcoming a conference opponent back to the Kohl Center for the last time this season.
If the season was to end right now, the UW would battle the Minnesota State Mavericks, a team that the Badgers are 3-1 against this season.
It is also a possibility for the Badgers to do battle the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves, a team Wisconsin outscored, 11-3, in a two-game sweep earlier this season.
Even though the Badgers head west this weekend to battle Minnesota in their final regular season game, it is possible for the UW to turn around and play them again in the opening round of the WCHA's. Wisconsin split the regular-season series against the Gophers earlier this season.
Finally, though the furthest stretch for Wisconsin, there remains the possibility that the Badgers would have to face the Colorado College Tigers. Though the UW has outscored CC, 12-10, in the four games, the Badgers are 1-2-1 against the Tigers so far this season.
This is the second time in as many years that Wisconsin will host the opening round of the playoffs. Last year, Wisconsin swept Minnesota State in a pair of games in the Kohl Center, but then dropped a 3-0 decision to Denver in the semifinals. The Badgers bounced back by topping the North Dakota Fighting Sioux, 4-1, in the third-place game.
This will be the last time seven Badger seniors lace up their skates in the Kohl Center.
