Wisconsin Hockey 24-25 Improving With All Due Haste.

I don't think Lucuis or Whitelaw lacked on D last year. Plenty of times they were hustling to back check. It's possible they didn't want to continue that effort.

Whether you like the stat or not is up to you, but his +/- was zero and only 2 forwards that played regularly were worse, Silye and Stramel, both -4. I wasn't expecting it to lead the forwards due to his offensive abilities, but it's clear that on that team he was near the bottom. Maybe Caufield got a pass on defense, but Lucius was no Caufield. Caufield was +9 his final year.

Every time he had the puck in the O zone he made something happen. He's the biggest loss, thought they lost a ton of experience at F overall. Losing that F kid to PSU was a blow as well. He brought in 2 of the more highly regarded F's to try and fill the gaps and from a recruiting standpoint he only had 1 year under his belt at UW and most of the desirable guys were signed 2-3 years ago by other teams, so he didn't have a lot to pick from from the uncommitted.

UW has great coaches with a proven track record up and down the staff, not just Hastings. It will come together.

Aiden Fink would have been tremendous here.

The team is a lot better than where they were at the beginning of the year. I just wish it translated into more wins. Slow progression in that department.

Like I said, we fundamentally disagree on what is happening here.

you seem to think it’s a talent issue, i don’t.

Hastings is a great coach and his assistants are great too. He arrived to a full cupboard and it showed last year. The cupboard is still full. THAT is a part of the frustration. This isn’t a Sauer team circa 1997 or Eaves circa 2015.

THAT is why I get frustrated. Add to it the history of the last 30 years and I have 0 patience.

As for Hastings’ style perhaps not working in b10?

the same was said about Bo Ryan and Dick Bennett. They turned out okay as I recall.

So your argument is that Hastings cannot get our players to play with effort? If that is the case, that is a gigantic red flag.

Bo Ryan won with lower level talent that gave 110% effort and a play style that limited possessions for the opponent.

Would you say that we have the same talent level as Minnesota, BC, BU, Denver, and North Dakota?

First, my only comment about effort was with respect to OT vs Minnesota. In no way do I believe because Minnesota has more NHL draft picks they’re better than Wisconsin.

what I said is the coaches haven’t figure it (this team) out yet.

Bo Ryan had teams loaded with talent. It’s not all about McDonald’s All-Americans. Ryan coached his existing talent WAY up. Same with Bennett.

What you seem to want me to say is because team x has 10-14 players drafted by NHL teams that automatically means they’re better. And I think that’s bs. Because that’s “on paper” and removes coaching from the equation.

i Recall a “lesser talented” Wisconsin team in 95 or 96 took Minnesota to the woodshed. 6-2 and 7-3 in Madison. Minnesota had Bonin, Crowley, Westrum, Rasmussen, et al. Wisconsin had maybe Joe Bianchi as a freshman with NHL asperations. So it’s not always about draft picks and honestly as has been said before, if Wisconsin has 0 NHL draft picks I don’t care so long as they win.

They tried every which way they could to lose the game short of taking an OT penalty, but in the end Laatsch said F it and ended it himself before someone gave it away.

My anger spiked when the refs allowed PSU’s second goal to stand. Such a clear and obvious kicking motion.

Glad to get the win and they scored 5 goals!

Can we get Gramme in net tomorrow? I don’t understand how he wasn’t the starter after playing so well last Saturday.

Bo Ryan won without talent and with talent. He is one of the best NCAA basketball coaches of all time. He would routinely school coaches like Tom Crean at IU, whom had the better talent but not a better strategy. Do you see Hastings being able to out coach Motzko/Nightingale/Carle/etc? I just don’t see it. If we match their talent level and we have a similar level coach, one would hope we will have the same level of success.

They don’t necessarily need to be draft picks. The scoring players from last year just happened to be draft picks. There have been plenty of high talent guys that were not draft picks. Mark Zengerle and Tyler Barnes are the immediate two that come to mind. Gavin Morrissey might be that kind of guy. If we could get 2-3 freshmen like those guys every year, we would be perennial contenders. However, non-1st round draft picks generally can give you 3-4 years of top 6 forward or top 4 defenseman play. Look at Denver; their top 5 and 8 of their top 10 point producers are draft picks. Seeing Buckberger definitely stings.

1995 was the year I was born. A google search showed me that Minnesota also beat Wisconsin that year 8-4 and 5-0 in Minneapolis and 4-3 in OT later on (WCHA Final Five?). Wisconsin finished that year 17-20-3 and did not make the tournament. On the other hand, Minnesota finished that year 30-10-2, won the WCHA tournament, made the NCAA tournament, and won a game before being eliminated. Minnesota definitely had the better year, so I am not really sure your point is resonating with me here… Perhaps further explanation is needed.

Look at Hastings record vs Minnesota overall. He has Motzko’s number.

As to last night. Dexheimer gives PSU a goal, and the team once again cannot stop taking penalties. They’re lucky Tassy wasn’t called for contact to the head.

if they clean up the penalties the wins will come with more frequency.

They didn’t have the gophers number last weekend unfortunately :(

Many expletives were said after that goal against. What on earth was Dexheimer doing… Just brutal.

PK% is a shade above 70% this year. Far cry from last year’s 87.2%. Is it goaltending? I feel like Scarfone plays way too deep in his net. Gramme is more trustworthy.

I think Gramme should be starting. Nothing against Scarfone I just think Gramme has potential to be an all-time great at UW.

Got the sweep! Not gonna lie, I was definitely worried they were going to blow the 4-0 lead. Spent a huge chunk of the 2nd and 3rd periods in turtle formation. Thankfully, PSU took a dumb 5 minute penalty and we scored 2 goals on it.

Since Motzko's name has been tossed around, you might want to look at his first two years at Minnesota. Very mediocre. Many Gophers fans that I know were questioning whether he had been the right choice.

But feel free to send Hastings back to Mankato.

Brought that up on page 10, post 142!

I don’t think anyone is questioning that Hastings is the right person for the job. Just wish there was a smoother transition between the Granato recruits leaving and the Hastings recruits/transfers coming in.

This week: BYE

Next game: Alaska Anchorage Fri 11/29 6 pm (B1G+); Sat 11/30 8 pm (B1G+)
After that: Michigan State Fri 12/6 7 pm (B1G+); Sat 12/7 7 pm (BTN)

Good weekend, but still disturbing trends and downward in many categories (Defense, Save %, Penalty Kill). Need to heal this bye week, win 2 against AA in two weeks.

Great for them to hit a bye week on a high. A lot of the game is mental and I hope the 2 wins get them in a good place.

I haven't seen enough of the games to answer this question: Do they have an issue in goal or is the D zone play just that bad?

I'm thinking about attending the Friday Seawolf game. We shall see.
