Shamless plug: http://noalibisnoregrets.blogspot.com/2009/12/usa-hockey-names-wjc-roster.html

Stepan, Gardiner and Ramage all make the final WJC squad.

USA! USA! USA!

Really looking forward to Saturday's game and the start of the tourney. We play Canada on New Year's Eve though and I'm supposed to go to my wife's co-worker's house for a party. They're bouncyball people and I'm sure they don't have the NHL Network. The Blackhawks play that night also. Maybe I'll be sick that day...

Funny that there is only one Gopher on the team. I thought that Minnesota was the epicenter of hockey in this country and that all their best went to UM.

Schroeder and Stepan should be money though!

Re: WISCONSIN HOCKEY 09-10 - Climbing The Mountain (7th Edition?)

C. Johnson get your skates sharpened it's time to play!

Looking forward to seeing Craig Johnson out there during the Showdown. He played well in the 2nd half last season, but Ramage has been good and no reason to bench him. Hopefully Johnson/Springer/Little make the most of their ice time.

Re: WISCONSIN HOCKEY 09-10 - Climbing The Mountain (7th Edition?)

I don't see this years WJC's hurting us like before. We honestly have 5 lines that could skate 1,2,3,4,5 every game on the forwards side and 4 lines of d rolling out every shaft plus one. I bet practice this week is going to be intense to see who feels the void of these three skaters playing for the USA.

With no college hockey players playing for Canada this year doesn't it feel good to have had a Badger winning a gold for Canada last year. It just shows what type of players we pay to watch.....13K plus at the Kohl. Hopefully, 15K plus once we start back up from break.

I'm excited to see Craiger play for once this year. OUr D-Core has been solid but the kid works really hard and deserves some ice time, there is no doubt that has schultz and RAmage not caught on so quickly C. Johnson would be paired with B. Smith every game

Re: WISCONSIN HOCKEY 09-10 - Climbing The Mountain (7th Edition?)

After watching yesterday's game between US and Switzerland, could not help but notice how few times I saw either Ramage or Gardiner on the ice. The stats confirm between the 2 - only 1 shot on goal.

Could it be that Osiecki, as the defenseman coach. is preserving his own 2 players so they will be fresh when they return to the Badger lineup after the tournament? If he is, could not blame him.

No, Oz is not protecting them. Every player involved in this is all in and they aren't Badgers right now, they're part of team USA. Those two played a lot in the first game including killing penalties and looked good.

I did notice that they weren't out there as much in yesterday's game though. Probably rested them a bit coz it was an afternoon game following a night game.

Whatever the reason, it wasn't coz Oz is saving them for the CC series.

Re: WISCONSIN HOCKEY 09-10 - Climbing The Mountain (7th Edition?)

Yeah, definitely not keeping them on the bench to keep them fresh - Ramage was out for a long time killing a 5x3 and doing a helluva job.

Re: WISCONSIN HOCKEY 09-10 - Climbing The Mountain (7th Edition?)

Stepan tied for first in scoring in World Juniors.

Hopefully this gives him the confidence (or whatever the hell he needs) to come back and put of those same type of numbers at UW in the 2nd half.

Well he has been playing pretty good lately - 22 points in 18 games total, 14 in his last 7. Of course a lot of those were against MTU. But also the 5 point game against MSU and a couple assists in the win over UND. But it definitely would be nice to see him score more goals.

Keeping in mind that MTU is probably a better team than many of these lesser WJC sides...

Re: WISCONSIN HOCKEY 09-10 - Climbing The Mountain (7th Edition?)

Just throwing out a random "I hate the Showdown" - especially on a Sunday night after a long holiday weekend. When I lived 45 minutes away it was bad enough, now that I live 2 hours away coupled with the Sunday night and it's really annoying. Then they include it with season tickets. Ugh. Good riddance.

I thought Stepan was a beast last night. His work in the offensive zone in the third and OT was exceptional, especially when Kristo was in front of the net. Stepan peeled pucks off the boards on a number of occasions to set DK up, including what would have been the game winner with ten seconds left in OT. Kristo, a great sniper, just happened to be stoned by the goalie. If I am not mistaken, on one of those chances...... Gardiner, Ramage, Stepan, and Kristo were all on the ice.

Re: WISCONSIN HOCKEY 09-10 - Climbing The Mountain (7th Edition?)

So how did this Little possibly redshirting get past all the UW insiders?

On the redshirt concept, is it strictly the coach's call to redshirt a guy, or does he have to get the player's concent for it to happen? Can player a tell a coach he wants to be redshirted and then get the coach's concent?

Happy new year to all the UW fans and may the Lord richly bless you in the new year!

I think its a bit of a mutual thing but if your in a position like Little, and you probably aren't going to play in more than two games, and your not going to play pro hockey, why not take a redshirt year?

Well I did predict it in the off-season thread

I was actually going to suggest they redshirt Little or Springer. Both have a very similiar skill-set, neither is a offensive minded or defensive minded d-man, more of a balanced type. One of them is going to be the 9th man in the rotation. So why not? Ramage is a defensive minded guy which is sorely needed with this group so I don't see him sitting this season. Mauer definitely needs to redshirt IMO.

I wouldn't say Little won't play pro hockey, but he has little downside to spending another year of development at UW before he has to try and use an ATO to stick with an AHL or ECHL team.

I agree, pro hockey probably wansn't the term I should have used. But he won't be an NHL or (most likely) even an AHL guy. The extra time coupled with the addition of his brother to next years team makes a ton of sense.

I've tried to project out our defensemen over the next few years. What do you guys think? In looking at our projected rosters, I still don't see Little getting a ton of PT over the next few seasons but we shall see.

I agree with your projections, but to be fair:
1.) Injuries Happen.
2.) Early departures often happen earlier than expected.
3.) Freshmen acclimation periods vary.
