Wisconsin Badgers 2016-2017

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2016-2017

I agree that the Badgers will need their power play to get going in the second half. It is pretty incredible that they are having the season they are having with it only operating at 11% efficiency. I'm not a coach but it does seem interesting to me that the same group of players are still sent out continuously every time UW goes on the power play. I'm not sure I would classify Norby as a "sniper" either. She only has 4 goals on the season despite being awarded a ton of playing time including a spot on the second power play unit time after time. Also, Cogan has 6 goals, Roque has 3 goals, Shaver has 3 goals, McKibbon has 5 goals, and Clark has 5 goals on the season -- all these players are on the power play every game. One player that is never on the power play is Wellhausen. She is third on the team with 9 goals and leads the team with 3 game winning goals but for some reason doesn't get a chance. Not really sure why. She wins puck battles (despite her size), has terrific speed, and isn't afraid to go to the front of the net to score. We made the trip to Ohio State last weekend to watch the games and the goal #21 scored on Saturday was a SNIPE type of goal from the high slot. I know the Badger coaching staff is the best around, and I'm sure they have their reasons for putting certain players on the power play. It just seems strange to me that a teams third leading goal scorer isn't used at all, especially when the current players used aren't getting it done. Despite the power play woes however, this team is so much fun to watch! Looking forward to an amazing second half of the season! Merry Christmas!

I am not sure the blame should go on the Power Play unit. I think the blame is on the coaching. I have observed how teams are defending the Red Army on Penalties. All four PKers go to the house and stay there. Last year Goph Rachel Ramsey would fire bomb after bomb at anybody sitting down low and eventually the D would spread out. BECAUSE IT HURTS TO GET HIT BY A BOMB!. Come on coach what would Herbie do?

I think the Badgers just need to roll all 3 lines on the power play and attack the opposition with as much speed and skill as they do when they play 5 vs 5. As soon as they go on the power play we become stationary and keep everything on the perimeter setting up for one big shot from a terrible angle! Very easy to defend. And there is no net front presence. By rolling the three lines you get constant movement and multiple scoring chances. This is the best team in college hockey because of their depth.. USE THE DEPTH!!

Maybe 2 years ago since Ramsey graduated after the 2014/2015 season? Or maybe you're thinking of McMillen from last year?

Obviously the coaches' schemes suck or the players can't execute the schemes properly. I think UW's plan it to ride these schemes till the NCAA's, then they will unleash an unstoppable pp that will propel them to victory.

You could call it "The Kessel suprise". ;)

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2016-2017

They are going to need the PP in the wcha tourney and ncaa's.
Maybe in the NCAAs. Maybe. UW has already proven it can beat the rest of the WCHA with a crappy PP. The Gophers didn't score any PP goals at the Frozen Four last year, and they still gave them the same trophy that they'd have gotten if their PP had scored 50% of the time.

A great point. Sooner or later the talent on this team will come through on the power play. The team has been awesome in spite of the power play troubles. An incredible first 20 games of the season for the Badgers! The second half of the season should be filled with a lot of exciting hockey especially at LaBahn! Badger fans have to be happy that they will see this team playing at home for a good part of the rest of the year. Also good luck to all the Badger players involved in the USA-Canada series this weekend. It looks like the first game on Saturday will be televised on NBC Sports!

I just think in a tight game a ppg may be the difference. UM doesn't need to go to OT with UW if they get a ppg in the first 3 periods.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2016-2017

Wisconsin flexing on Ohio State, up 6-0 after 2 periods. Both Pankowski and Ryan have two goals. The first line has busted out tonight with Cogan and Clark also lighting the lamp. Fortunately, no letdown game tonight.

Good luck this weekend to the current Badgers on both team Canada and USA. Clark, Desbien, Pankowski, and Ryan. All four have been super this season and deserving of this honor!

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2016-2017

Wow. Sophie Shirley made the Canadian roster for the border battle, the youngest one on the roster. I was kinda hoping she'd help fill in the holes left by Clark and Pankowski next year for the Olympics, but it looks probable she'll be creating a hole to fill herself. MJ does have 15 F for next year, so he'll still have 4 lines if he wants to go that route.

Next year's forward lines almost looks foreign...(getting WAY ahead I know, but that's in my dna to think ahead).

Wellhausen Roque Hanzlik
Cogan Norby Mauermann
Shaver Drake Kepler
Pettet Posick Schneider

NCAA's could be wide open next year.

Other than Worlds, who does/doesn't make rosters for these other events isn't that big of an indicator of who the program views as its top players. You have to always look at who isn't on these rosters but is a safe bet to make the Olympics.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2016-2017

Desbiens hurt (LBI, knee????) vs Team USA. Nothing we did. Looked like she move awkwardly.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2016-2017

Yeah idk what she did but she was in a ton of pain. She really put no weight on her leg at all...

Anybody know if she was 'dinged' going into this? I know there was the collision earlier but that was on her left side & was listed as 'upper body'. Hope it is nothing serious

I don't think she was "dinged". It was more just a scramble in front with a loose puck. I believe she realized she didn't have the puck covered, and when moving in an attempt to smother it she ended up in a very awkward position. If I had to guess (and it's only a guess) I would say it's a knee. Hopefully nothing too serious.
