Wisconsin Badgers 2016-2017

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2016-2017

Have to take a break (perhaps permanently) from watching the Badgers choke away the Big 10 championship game.

Gophers definitely deserved the win today. They came out with more energy and (for the most part) controlled the play the first two periods. Finally, Wisconsin played with some urgency in the 3rd, but just couldn't bury one. There were some serious scrums in front of both goalies where I couldn't believe nobody scored. Both Desbiens and Peters got helped out by the pipe/crossbar.

I'm impressed how consistently Minnesota plays Wisconsin. They never have an off-game, a bad period and rarely have a bad stretch more than a minute or two. In addition, they clear their defensive zone and transition to offense so well. Make one little mistake and it's an odd-man rush. When the Badgers did make a rush, it always seemed like a 1-on-2 or 2-on-3 in which you really don't have a good scoring chance.

So all you can do is get back to it tomorrow and hope for a better effort and get some better bounces. Looks like tomorrow is also a sellout, which is rare around here on a Packer Sunday.

I'm really missing Courtney Burke running the PP. There just seems to be too much talent for the power play to be this mediocre.

In a rare moment of seriousness from me, this is an interesting observation that makes sense in the context of how much of a target Minnesota is when they are playing virtually everyone else. Wisconsin is for Minnesota "that team" that changes their perspective of not being the overwhelming favorite. And look, I am addressing this for Minnesota only but this would be a very similar perspective for Wisconsin towards Minnesota as well. It makes the games a lot of fun to observe on the one hand but a bit nerve-racking on the other.

I know for many it is ancient history but it is still fresh in my mind; a few years back MN went through a streak where I felt they had the better team on paper but the Badgers brought it every game and won when it mattered. It was painful to watch and I am sure it was disheartening to the players who were so sure it would be different THIS TIME! Badger fans should not despair, it is early in the season and no matter what the wheel will turn some day. Maybe this year, maybe next and in the meantime we all get to watch some really excellent hockey.

I predict a Badger win today. They will not lose two in a row. 3-2 final!

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2016-2017

8-2 are you kidding me??? Wow.

Hahahahahahahaha. Nothing will wipe the smile from my face for weeks and weeks. That one stays on the DVR forever!

Mauermann can play. Nice to see MJ work her into the game today. Too bad he under-recruited F's and she's stuck riding the pine for lack of depth.

On the ppg today, Ryan actually pulled her shoulder in as the puck went at her and it went in vs hitting her. A very curious move to say the least. If anything she should be trying to get in the way of the puck. Disappointed on the first goal ARD allowed. I think she should have had that one.

Such a weird game in that UW didn't have a lot of shots, but the transition play was fantastic.

Very grateful the band was there today. Makes all the difference in the world.

Today was the 2nd time I've seen the drill bit get stuck in the ice. It happened a few years ago on the other end. This time it too way longer to fix. Keystone cops for sure.

Yeah, that was odd. It's not what you'd see from a team like Bemidji, but then the Beavers aren't likely to have many 4-goal first periods.

Wow.

Total domination by the Badgers yesterday. Plenty of highlight type goals but I thought Wellhausens first goal was the most impressive as she stole the puck from a Gopher player at center ice and then BLEW by and between both defensemen to score while being hauled down from behind.. A really spectacular individual effort! Yesterday also showed the depth and balance that Wisconsin has at the forward position. Four goals were scores by the 2nd line, 3 goals by the third line, and 1 goal by the first line. This type of balance is a match up problem for any other team in the country. Eventually they will just wear you down with their speed and every one of the top 9-10 forwards can score.. Despite the loss on Saturday, UW has to feel really good about how they match up with Minnesota.

Can't disagree with any of this. Good assessment at this stage of the season.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2016-2017

Thanks for beating the goofs when I wasn't there. Just kidding of course. I was at the Saturday game and even though the Badgers didn't win, it's still fun at those games. For those that were at both games, what was the difference. Was there a different goalie, although I don't think the Gopher goalie was tested Saturday? Were they just pumped up?

Hmm, I guess I should have written that 24 hours earlier. Even with Minnesota down Cameranesi (which is obviously a big deal), I didn't expect that kind of game. There may have been more defensive breakdowns and bad goals given up by Minnesota in one afternoon against Wisconsin than over the last 5-6 years combined (that I've witnessed). Then add in a better energy level by the Badgers and multiple highlight goals and here we are. After a frustrating loss Saturday, I wasn't sure if they would come back playing tight or night. Whatever was said or done from one game to the next worked in a big way.

Personally, my favorite plays were the assists from Norby to Nurse and the Roque assist to Welhaussen. Those were great plays against anyone, but almost never seen against Minnesota.

Ultimately, both teams got what they needed, though not necessarily wanted, from the weekend if that makes any sense. Minnesota gets the split on the road short-handed, and Wisconsin gets the payback game to hopefully show that the Gophers aren't in their head again.
