Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2014-2015

Assuming a healthy lineup, ideally by this time of year your lines would be set!

Exactly, it's a curious time to be messing around with the lines. The lines he used @ OSU were the ones he used against UMD. I thought Ammerman, Clark and Pankowski were great together.

He's darned if he does and darned if he doesn't. The Badgers have been in a scoring slump for much of the second half.

I agree. They're not scoring, so he's got to do what he can to try and find the spark. They're not major changes, so it's not like he's throwing everything in to chaos. Jospehs/Ammerman/Turnbull was the top line last season and the only ones that could score, so putting them back together to see if it can find old magic isn't a huge change or one that makes anyone uncomfortable, so it's a worthwhile "gamble" to see if you can stir up the malaise.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2014-2015

The refs pretty much swallowed the whistle all day long. The bigger thing is that the Badgers just seemed to be off their game, always being a step behind where they needed to be. They had several great chances, but just kind of choked. I don't remember the players involved, but in the 2nd, they had a basically 2 on 0 breakaway, and the player with the puck basically chipped the pass across, and sent it bouncing over the other players stick. Earlier in the same period, a Badger standing on the edge of the goal, had a puck bounce to her off the end board with a wide open net, and she pushed it right back across the side of the goal.

Credit SCSU's Defense too. They basically played most of the game like they were on a penalty kill, keeping at least 3 or 4 players in front of the net nearly all the time. As many shots as Wisconsin had, there were a ton more that were blocked, and many of the ones that got through weren't exactly quality shots.

Sowchuk to McKibbon

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2014-2015

What was most disappointing was that in the third period, Wisconsin's very obvious superiority talent-wise seemed to go away. After the second intermission, it looked like a different matchup.

I disagree with this to some extent. After the Badgers called the timeout, which was about 7:30 into the period, they dominated the game. They essentially looked to be on a 10 minute power play. They even had a penalty kill during this time and still controlled the puck for most of the time.

It would have been nice for them to find that fire before 10 minutes left in the game....

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2014-2015

Lines at Ohio (as listed on the chart) were:
Sylvester, Turnbull, Josephs
Ammerman, Clarke, Pankowski
Nurse, McKibbon, Wellhausen
Sowchuck centering different wingers

Lines yesterday were:
Ammerman, Turnbull, Josephs
Nurse, Clark, Pankowski
Sylvester, Sowchuk, McKibbon
Wellhausen wing to the 'Friday 4th line' of Jones and Harding, with Harding at center

For the record, lines were again scrambled from last week, and from yesterday (per the line chart).
Today it was:
Sylvester, Turnbull, Ammerman
Wellhausen, Clark, Pankowski
Nurse, McKibbon, Josephs
Sowchuk back centering the 'Saturday forwards, Johnson and Doner

(Somebody smarter than me will have to comment on the relative importance of Ammerman and Wellhausen playing on their 'other' side.)

This looks like what it was to start the second half at Minnesota. UW didn't generate a lot in the first game of 2015, and Johnson juggled lines for the second, and it seems that the Badgers have been offensively inconsistent ever since. Either he decided to go back to those combinations that worked in the first half, or it is a nod to being the final regular-season game for the seniors, so he wanted to start them even though it wasn't an official Senior Day.

A note that doesn't really matter to that decision process: Johnson didn't make it back from Saturday's 'Miracle On Ice' reunion until the start of the third period.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2014-2015

with the goal tending in the WCHA, it is not surprising that goals are hard to come by

I'm looking on the bright side, with Harvard losing & tying, the Badgers will likely stay #4 and thus make a MN & WI game unlikely in the NCAA unless it is the final

Typo?

Wisconsin is #3 in the Pairwise, and is likely to stay there, even if Harvard ends up with the better RPI.

Wisconsin has already 'won' the Common Opponents component to the pair, and leads the 'Teams Under Consideration' 13-5-4 to 10-5-3. For Harvard to win the pair and move to #3, they need to 'win' the TUC; and to win the TUC, Harvard would have to get three TUC wins with one loss and have Wisconsin get only a TUC loss. That is, Harvard has to at least make the ECAC final while Wisconsin losses in their WHCA semi-final. Certainly possible, but...

But on the other half, as Grant points out, Minnesota is better that 50/50 to pass BC into #1 in the Pairwise, putting them on the other side of the bracket from a #3 Wisconsin.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2014-2015

Solid win today, lots of players in the G and A columns. Clark's goal was very sweet, cutting to the middle on the rush beating 2 players.

Very large crowd, we got there right at noon and we had to split up in 2 sets of 2 of find seating.

St. Cloud was hacking pretty hard with their sticks and there was quite a bit of checking going on. Pankowski got away with a blatant one, St. Cloud did as well. I swear I have seen Langley call at least 6 games and never call a penalty (her name is Morrision in the box score?). Her partner Ludwig wasn't much better. Hopefully next week they have a different set calling the game. I can see how Friday's game was frustrating from a refereeing standpoint.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2014-2015

Her partner Ludwig wasn't much better.

His style has changed completely in the last couple of years. Ludwig always alternated penalties. It was very predictable, if you got a penalty your opponent would get the next one so you could get away with a lot of crap & the other guys had to be extra careful. Then he would make a call & the positions flipped. This year he seems to have just given up calling anything.

So...he went from blatantly disregarding the rules of hockey while acting like he was trying to losing any interest in even appearing to care? Some fans who have been watching him for longer than I've watched women's college hockey told me that the ineptitude isn't anything new, so this doesn't surprise me.

As for what I have to say about today's game...it was an excellent job by Wisconsin. St. Cloud State recorded zero shots on goal when Wisconsin had Mark Johnson behind the bench. Will this trend continue when he's behind the bench for the entirety of next weekend's games? We'll see!

During a power play SCSU had in the second, I noticed that the Badgers almost never allowed the Huskies to possess the puck more than 3-4 feet away from the boards or the blue line in the offensive zone.

The line combinations that were used on Sunday were used earlier in the year for about 5 weeks prior to the Christmas break.. During that time the Badgers were 8-1..Yesterdays game featured the reuniting of the senior line of Turnbull, Ammerman, and Sylvester and the freshman line of Clark, Wellhausen, and Pankowski. Ammerman scored her first goal in weeks and Wellhausen had her first multi-point game as a Badger (2 assists). The third line featured McKibbon, Nurse, and Josephs and Nurse scored her first goal in quite some time.. I have a feeling that this will be the line up to start the playoffs!

to be exact, the only change was flipping Sylvestor & Welhausen
the first game the all freshman line got torched for 3 goals
with the above change, the Badgers played much better
although part of it was likely getting beat the day before, that's always a good motivator

having only seen the Badgers play twice this year, I'll leave it up to you
but IMO, I don't care how good a freshman is, a freshman playing defense against a senior or junior is a mismatch
doesn't matter if they are wearing cardinal & white or maroon & gold, or any other color

that's all I'm interested in
seeing the Badgers and Gophers playing a minimum of 4 times a year I'm hoping to see some other matchups in the NCAA

if it happens in the final, would be a great game with Ridder overflowing

It would be a bummer if UW and UM matched up again in the semi's. The west needs to get the title back.

I just pre-ordered by NCAA quarters seats. I probably didn't have to, but I don't want to leave anything to chance.

I also put in a request for NCAA playoff tickets. I think with reserved seating, I think it will be a relative quick sellout. Not sure if they offer official standing room spaces or not.

I haven't been to all games at LaBahn, but I don't remember a bigger crowd than this last Sunday's game. I rolled in right at face-off and had a tricky time finding a single seat. I felt bad for several families that came in with a group of 3-5 and kind of had to roam around looking for seats or split up. Unfortunately, a packed house exposes some of the logistical issues of the arena. The concession line was horribly backed up. I burned the whole 2nd intermission and a couple minutes of the 3rd waiting in line to order nachos. I felt bad for the concession worker as she was completely frazzled. They were running out of food and containers to put food in.

The game itself was kind of what I expected for both games of the series. Wasn't able to make the game Friday, but sounds like they played hard but just couldn't get enough past Friend (who didn't play Sunday). I can't imagine Friend not getting all the starts this weekend.

I know there had been a couple of theories about why senior day wasn't Sunday, instead two weeks against UMD. I'm guessing a big factor was that Coach Johnson was going to be out in Lake Placid Saturday and was going to be cutting it close getting back by Sunday. In fact, he got delayed somewhere along the way and didn't get back until the 3rd period.

I am convinced that you guys are completely making this stuff up just to mess with those of us on the east coast.
