Wisconsin Badgers 2010-2011, The next generation.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2010-2011, The next generation.

Yeah, what he was doing was trying to throw the net at the guy.

That penalty killed us; we actually had some momentum at that point. I will say this for Smith, though. He was up near the head of the handshake line at the end of the game.

Love his effort, passion and talent. One thing I will say is at least he seems to care. He's still a kid and hopefully he'll mature.

He needs to get ahold of his emotions (obviously) and channel them into something more positive. I understand what it is to see red and do something regrettable. At least it was the net and not a player in a compromised position.

I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, as long as he shows growth and doesn't maim anyone. FWIW, I also wanted to jump on the ice and attack the net after being frustrated all night on Friday.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2010-2011, The next generation.

that was one good old-fashioned *** kicking by the sioux.

UW wasn't in this game from the drop of the puck.

Gardiner and Schultz were beaten repeatedly. Simonelli and Faust need more minutes to get used to what it takes at this level

Turnbull isn't up to playing w/Smith and Zengerle. he just doesn't have the creativity, and doesn't make sharp enough passes or quick enough decisions

Smith...that was a stupid penalty. just uncalled for and bizarre

highlights were few

Gudmanson did what he could. Ratty Johnson played well I thought. Barnes, Mersch and Zengerle had moments (I actually think they should be on a line together)

I'd like to see what Clark can do w/more minutes

overall after watching the sux for 2 consecutive games, they're WAY beyond what BU is and it's hard to fathom they lost any games thusfar.

I hope UW gets them in the WCHA playoffs

Not much to add, but I agree about Clark. He was a talented Shattuck St Mary's kid, and I'd like to see him in a scoring role on occasion to see what he can do. On the 4th line, he might he a few chances a weekend only.

The reason the Green Gophers (my new nickname for UND) have lost games is because Aaron Dell is NOT a good goalie. Sure he looked good this weekend, but the credit needs to go to the Badgers ineffective offense, and the Green Gophers suffocating defense. The Badgers didn't get many good offensive chances, but on the few they did, Dell looked shaky at best, and gave up some big rebounds, but there was never a Badger around to clean up. On the weekend, Dell saves 29 of 31, Goody 74 of 79 by my count. Of that 74, many outstanding saves were made by Goody. In the NCAA tourney, poor goaltending will lead to teams like Duluth, BC, Miami (OH) beating down a good team like North Dakota. If I was one of their fans, I'd be worried long term. That defense will suffocate a lot of teams, but the other top teams will expose that glaring weakness, and the Badgers aren't that good yet. I hope the Badgers get another shot at the Final Five.

The importance of Jordy Murray to the team was evident to me on saturday as well. He has to be in the lineup everynight, as Turnbull was not the answer on the top line.

I like Mersch too, he "reminds" me of Blake Geoffrion. Just got that feeling this weekend that he will turn into something special in a few seasons.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2010-2011, The next generation.

Dell looked really shaky. We needed to crash the net; we would have gotten goals.

I haven't seen Murray's status. Will he be back this weekend or is it serious?

I don't think Jordy was concussed unless they're withholding some info. Some tweets say he just got a new zipper on his chin, but to hockey players, that's nothing.

To me, Dell didn't look shaky....just bored. I think he could've sat on the cross bar with a cup of coffee and watched the game.

Alvarez wants to increase ticket prices.

University of Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez will ask for a $2 increase for tickets to men's hockey games at a finance committee meeting of the Athletic Board on Tuesday, as well as increases to funding for preferred seating and parking programs for Camp Randall and the Kohl Center.

The increase to UW men's hockey ticket prices would be the first since 2005, Alvarez said in a letter to season ticket-holders and BadgerFund contributors in several sports.

Tickets currently cost $22 for the lower bowl and $18 for the upper decks at the Kohl Center.

Alvarez also said he will ask for unspecified increases in minimum contributions to the BadgerFund, in large part to underwrite a proposed $76.8 million athletic performance center.

I got an e-mail about this today, Alvarez claims that UW needs to upgrade its facilities in order to continue to attract quality recruits.
He wants to upgrade UW's facilities for strength and conditioning, sports medicine, academic services and team locker rooms.
Meh, $2 more per game wont break my budget and if you look at the gift levels for the UW, its still considerably lower than most of the other Big Ten schools and if it helps the UW put a higher quality product on the field/court/ice; Im OK with it.

Won't bother me. I don't think the prices have gone up in a number of years, have they?

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2010-2011, The next generation.

Not since 2005 according to the article. Probably due for an increase.

Thanks. I don't like to read articles because then facts tend to get in the way of my arguments. ;)

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2010-2011, The next generation.

I'm more concerned about the apparent juggling of parking assignments.

Like Chuck said, not since '05 and now that they are going to build La Bahn Arena; Im even more fine with the increase.

La Bahn Arena is officially a "go."

The Wisconsin State Building Commission on Wednesday gave final approval to a multi-level, hockey and swimming competition and training facility to be constructed adjacent to the Kohl Center on the UW-Madison campus. La Bahn Arena will be named after Charles (UW-Madison '49) and Mary Ann La Bahn, the lead donors for the project.

Construction is scheduled to begin in the spring, with the facility set to open in the fall of 2012.

"Mary Ann and I are delighted to participate in the funding for this excellent facility for men's and women's hockey and men's and women's swimming," Charles La Bahn said. "The concept is sound and generations of student-athletes will benefit from the comprehensive design and availability of the structure. (UW Director of Athletics) Barry Alvarez and his associates are to be commended for their foresight in planning this much needed facility."

La Bahn Arena will be a tri-level complex that will include the following:

• 90' by 200' ice sheet for men's and women's hockey practice and women's competition, with seating for approximately 2,400 spectators

• Men's and women's hockey team locker rooms and a visiting team locker room

• Women's hockey office suite and associated support spaces

• Locker and team room functions for the men's and women's swimming programs

• A connecting skywalk to the Southeast Recreation Facility (SERF)

• Minor renovation within SERF to accommodate circulation between the pool and the swimming teams' new locker suites

• Underground connection to the Kohl Center

• Relocation of the men's basketball locker suite to space vacated by the men's hockey locker suite, expansion of training room facilities, and expansion of laundry/equipment-issue facilities to accommodate the additional occupants of the complex
Key in the creation of the facility will be bringing the Badger hockey and swimming teams to a centralized campus location for practice, competition and student services such as academics and sports medicine.

Currently the Wisconsin women's hockey program plays its home games at the Kohl Center, but the team's practice facility and locker rooms are at the Shell next to Camp Randall Stadium.

The men's hockey team currently practices at the Bob Johnson Hockey Facility adjacent to the Alliant Energy Center in Madison, but has its locker room at the Kohl Center where it plays its home
games. The UW swimming and diving teams presently practice and compete in the Natatorium on campus. The new La Bahn Arena will provide these student-athletes with a new, state-of-the-art facility centrally located on campus and near other athletic department facilities.

Wisconsin men’s hockey head coach Mike Eaves announced today the signing of five student-athletes to National Letters of Intent. The future group of Badgers includes forwards Tyler Lapic (New Prague, Minn.), Matt Paape (Appleton, Wis.), Cody Strang (Madison, Wis.) and Brendan Woods (Palmyra, Pa.), as well as goaltender Joel Rumpel (Swift Current, Saskatchewan).
Looks like a group of players who have a lot of potential and its nice to see a couple of them are Wisconsinites.

More talk about the new rink:

Mike Eaves doesn't know how many recruits he's lost as University of Wisconsin men's hockey coach due to the lack of an established on-campus practice facility.

"It's hard to measure," he said, "but it was a factor."
"It means a lot," said Eaves, whose club currently practices three miles away from campus at the Alliant Energy Center, a place most players reach via scooter. "It's the final jewel in the crown that we have as a hockey program."

EDIT: and yet a third different facade treatment:

Detailed plans:

Question - I know Eaves has been on the record about preferring an ice surface that's more like 200x90, and that's what this rink will be. He's mentioned a desire to convert the KC to 200x90 as well, which would obviously be a complicated endeavor. Any word on that with this news?
