Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2010-2011, The next generation.

overall a solid game. 4-4.

Zengerle and Barnes are going to be monsters by the end of the year. great moves, great effort.

great job Gardiner on the hattrick...although there were moments where #19 tried to stick-handle through 2-3 guys (not good)

Bennett...the goalie situation appears to be worse than playing 7-8 frosh each night. Bennett looked way out of place that 1st period and 1/2 and by then the game was **** near out-of-hand. at least 2 goals were soft or HUGE mistakes on his part and he left numerous rebounds. If that were the sioux out there instead of wolverines that score would very likely have been 10-4 with all those rebounds. good grief.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2010-2011, The next generation.

I wouldn't yell about Bennett to much, he made some great saves in the late part of game to keep us around. Hard to say who will be in net tomorrow, maybe Thompson gets a shot jk lol haha.

trust me, those rebounds go out against the sioux and it's a HUGE and embarrassing defeat. I'm not saying Bennett sucks, I'm saying his performance sucked and his performance vs. UMD was equally terrible.

he was better in the 3rd period but still gave up some bigtime rebounds.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2010-2011, The next generation.

Would you rather have Goody or Bennett in goal, seem to me if Goody let's a goal in more are to come he loses confidence which is never good for a goalie. Maybe are goaltending was never good last year are team in front of them was amazing, except both sucked in championship game.

first - I'd say please can we ask Howie to come back? he's like Bo Ryan. He could walk into the stands and coach the 1st volunteer into being a great goalie
second - as for which guy to start I don't know. I trust the coaches on their decisions.

but the main thing is both guys have looked awful recently. having said that, it's *probably* an anomoly because at no point last year did I see the types of performances that have occurred this year (specifically the last 2 weeks). it's just frustrating to watch

I said in the scores thread that Bennett's big first mistake was just...awful. UW NEEDS wins now and he makes a play like that which was wholly unnecessary. he could have let that puck go and let the d-men handle it

is Faust still nursing an injury?

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2010-2011, The next generation.

Faust was injured never heard that, I would rather have him back more than Springer who just makes me nervous and on edge.

I just saw one of the funniest things ever, Hershey's sues Mars for packaging that looks similar.

Badger fans are so accustomed to superior goaltending that it is hard to respond to mediocre performance.

Next year will have superior goaltending as Joel Rumpel comes in.

We have been spoiled.

I'm starting to think that you like us. ;)

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2010-2011, The next generation.

I agree goaltending was terrible tonight. Yes, B2 got better - and actually had some nice looking saves late in the game - but there were a few jaw-droppingly easy goals Michigan failed to convert even late in the game.

Also, and this is a rhetorical question, why the heck is anyone named Shepherd still officiating? I don't think I can ever remember seeing tripping called that many times. It was ridiculous!

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2010-2011, The next generation.

Entertaining game tonight that after the first period we controlled large portions of.

Gardiner had a good offensive game, but I watched him get beat wide numerous times and then reaching. He got a penalty on one of those reaches.

I actually think that our D has been playing very uneven in our zone and what was supposed to be a strength has become an unknown.

Weren't we supposed to have trouble scoring this year and have to win games 2-1 and 3-2. Our defense isn't up to that challenge and luckily our offense is much better than expected.

Sometimes it is easy to forget how important forwards are in good defense.

spot on. I was hoping I wasn't the only noticing Gardiner getting beaten now consistently. I'm not sure if that means his d-pairings his 1st two seasons masked this or if he's just not playing as well.

the offense (and particularly freshman) has been such a nice surprise (creativity: Zengerle, Barnes - Tough as nails work: Mersch, Dahl) that my expectations for the team have risen dramatically and the consequence of that is that the goaltending and defense, who've both underperformed comes as quite a shock, and sort of bums me out since that was supposed to be the backbone of the team.

In watching him (he plays right below my corner seats for two periods) he is waiting a smidge too long to transition/pivot and then he's reaching instead of moving his feet.

I won't claim to be an expert (although I am a youth hockey coach ;)), but these two things are pretty obvious to me.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2010-2011, The next generation.

tonight's game was just what UW needed.

Gudmanson played pretty **** well.

Barnes, Mersch, C. Johnson, C. Smith, Murray all played great.

Zengerle (for the moves and puck control), Schultz (for the obvious) were out of their minds!!!

I'm a bit worried about the D scoring so much more than forwards but a win is a win and this is a great way to end the showcase.

the schedule gets a bit easier (comparatively) from here out so I'm still thinking UW can land in the top 4 WCHA and an at-large NCAA berth.

if the frosh continue to improve at the rate they are, this team will be a MUCH different team in Feb/March than they are now.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2010-2011, The next generation.

schadenfreude rats! schadenfreude!

from Baggot's article today, Rick Comely

"The Spartans (5-7-3) didn’t look like the same club that whipped Minnesota 5-2 in the Showcase opener Friday. Coach Rick Comley said that had a lot to do with UW, which got a lot of tempo mileage out of its top line and the tandem of Schultz and Gardiner.

“I think that unit of five they can put out there is as good as we’ve seen and certainly better than what we saw (from the Gophers),” Comley said, referring to a line that includes junior left winger Jordy Murray, sophomore center Craig Smith and freshman right winger Mark Zengerle. “They’re really good and Schultz is dynamic.”"

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2010-2011, The next generation.

Great game for Badgers on Saturday and AWESOME game for Schultz (who is beast). We finally out played a team for once. I'm not trying to be to some teams but the Badgers next 10 games are vs. relitivily easy teams.

P.S. Spartans jerset's were very ugly, and the Badgers were sweet.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2010-2011, The next generation.

One month ago I said I would take a .500 record over the past 4 weekends (Minny/UND/UMD/Mich/State). We went 2-4-2...but I think we played a lot better over that rough stretch than 2-4-2.

What was sweet about those jerseys? Really? There is NO creativity in their 3rd jersey designs, just a slight modification of the previous years. They could do so much better. That Bucky head just looks cheap on a game worn hockey jersey. Slap that **** on a $80 jersey in Bucky's Locker Room instead.

As for the Gardiner discussion earlier in the page, I wonder if all the minutes he has to play each night (I don't keep track but he is easily playing 30+ minutes) is catching up w/ him and slowing him down, espeically later in the game. Earlier in the season he was still fast, but lately he seems slow (in comparison).

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2010-2011, The next generation.

It was pretty cool to see Chris Chelios at the game on Saturday night. He was seated in the Nicholas Suites with 3-4 friends watching his sons. I wanted to tell him that I grew up watching him on Public TV taped delay.
