Wisconsin Badgers '10-'11

Re: Wisconsin Badgers '10-'11

I assume everyone who follows the Badger women closely is supportive of the idea to have an arena / rink for the women to play their home games and behind the plan to build a facility for that purpose. If that is seen as shooting for mediocrity, what would you like to see / have constructed as far as capacity for the women to have for their own arena, separate from the Kohl Center?
Sorry, I meant to say that I WOULDNT call it shooting for mediocrity as much as Id call it accepting reality. Honestly, Im very pleased with the planned construction and have no complaints.

That kinda sounds like one of those unfortunate stereotypes held by those who denigrate the sport. It is great hockey. I don't think the lack of checking negatively affects the sport in general, or it's entertainment value for a large percentage of die hard fans. I know there are fans that want to see checking allowed in women's hockey. Many current fans believe no checking actually enhances the game as well. Just the way I see it...no desire to spark that age old debate yet again.
I agree with you 100%, Im just saying what most people who dont know womens' hockey think. In a lot of ways I think that no checking makes it better because the players have to rely on stickwork and skating ability to get scoring chances and to play defense instead of just running into each other.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers '10-'11

Well Blogger, I'll give you this, you don't lack for opinions. I'll admit that I bring up the band issue several times during the season, because I think it's a big off-ice game experience issue and the UW athletic department/UW band has gotten very comfortable in not having anyone there, which I think is a shame. My hope is that I'm not the only person who this bothers and the appropriate people get contacted. Fair warning, if the season continues and the band fails to show up at all, I'll probably make mention of it again. I've been to a majority of the home games over the years, when was the tuba/flute experience? Doesn't sound good..

We'll have to agree to disagree on Phil. I think his value to the game experience far outweighs the negative of him standing and leading cheers for what is probably a total of three minutes a game (and certainly not all with the game clock running). Plus, the beauty of general admission for the women's games is that you could easily avoid sitting right behind him.

Lastly, for the time being, I'm not exactly sure who on this thread has been advocating for wanting to see more "drunk students/idiots" in the stands for women's games. I think that we can all agree that larger crowds (UW students included) would be a good thing assuming the balance of new people aren't there to shout obscenities and denigrate the women's game.

If I were you, Id make a point to mention it even more often just because WHKY Blogger complains about it.

Agree, everyone loves Phil. If they didnt, they wouldnt let him lead the cheering section and wouldnt start chanting, "PHIL, PHIL, PHIL" when he doesnt start the, "we want more" chant quick enough.

Also agree. Honestly, Ive never had much of a problem with the students. Sure, they annoy the visiting team and the visiting fans as much as possible, but thats the appeal of them. The ones who get really out of hand get ejected from the arena by security anyways, so I dont see the issue.
The Crease Creatures (student section), Phil and the crowd participation is what makes Badger hockey so awesome and the envy of the rest of the hockey world.
Honestly, Badger womens' hockey could use the advantage of the Kohl Center crowd that the men enjoy and the more we can get people to turn out for the womens' games like they do for the mens', the better.

Big series this weekend in Duluth.

Lets hope the girls are not phased by the hoopla surrounding the opening of Amsoil arena and keep moving forward extending their points lead.

At the very least the undesired set back is not the end of the world as a comfortable points lead going into the weekend should alleviate any pressures that come with a shorter edge in the standings going in..

Re: Wisconsin Badgers '10-'11

Should be a fun environment up there for the weekend. Curious what kind of crowds they'll draw. While I don't like conceding anything, a split wouldn't a bad result. Maybe Ohio State can do us a favor a take a game from the Gophers.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers '10-'11

Dont even speak of a split. We need the ladies to keep their foot on the gas. Win, win, win, win, win!!!!!!

Re: Wisconsin Badgers '10-'11

Nice 4-1 Badgers.. Nice to spoil something on UMD for a change!

I am sure the UMD faithful will be crowing that Irwin did not play and that was the difference but the Badgers won fair and square. UW even had a goal disallowed (kicked in) during the first period.

Mark changed the lines up tonight. Cant say too much as the lines seemed to click just fine.

I am sure UMD will be out for blood tomorrow.. Hopefully Haley "5 min Major" stays at home again!

Re: Wisconsin Badgers '10-'11

Clearly, the Badgers weren't rattled by the environment. Great win and I'm sure they'll be ready for whatever the Dogs will throw at them tomorrow night.

Go Badgers!

Nope. I'm not convinced Irwin is really "injured" as reported. I'm thinking Miller had her sit out. And she earned that. The Badgers won fair and square. (And it was a 10-minute major. At least give her credit for all of it.)

Clearly, the Badgers weren't rattled by the environment.

What environment? That place was like a morgue. Another disappointing performace by a team that doesn't look like it's much interested in defending its national title. Congrats to the Badgers. They came to play and they did just that.

Box score says 1,639 in a 6,764 seat building on opening night for the Women.. Come'on fans, you can do better than that....

Re: Wisconsin Badgers '10-'11

Bulldogs were outplayed in every aspect tonight. Kudos to the Badgers. If that team doesn't win another NCAA trophy in March, something will be VERY wrong!

Re: Wisconsin Badgers '10-'11

I also thought that they would pull a bigger crowd with it being women's opening night with the #1 team in country that is also a huge rival. Wonder if the bitter cold was a major factor in that?

Wow, thats pretty pathetic for the, "state of hockey".
Glad the see the Badgers could ruin their little coming out party.

We'd all like to see bigger crowds, but if you take a look a attendance figures around D-I last night...or most any night, 1639 doesn't seem all that pathetic.

Wondering, do the Badgers have any fans that typically travel to road games? I'd think they'd get some at this arena that's basically right on the border.

From what I've seen over the years, the Bulldog fan base definitely travels better than do Badger fans. Mostly for UW, you see only family unless the men's team is in town the same weekend. One thing working against UMD in trying to draw a crowd is that the Duluth News Tribune doesn't give them much for coverage. I see last night they didn't have anyone assigned to the game, and the short summary they ran had Kim Martin playing in goal. At least most of those 1,639 were actual humans, unlike the creative counts turned in at a certain other venue.;)

Re: Wisconsin Badgers '10-'11

They should've just let everyone in free and see if they could fill the place. You only get one opening night. Okay, I have to go finish sighing for the rest of the afternoon before tonight's game.

I'm not saying the crowd was terrible, just thought it would be bigger considering the situation (new arena opening/#1 team team). I debate that UMD travels much better than Wisconsin or Minnesota. There weren't that many Bulldog fans in Madison for the earlier series and I'd guess that a high majority of them had a direct connection to the team.

Come time for the WCHA Final Four, the Badgers will be represented in the stands as well as any team, with the exception of Minnesota, who obviously get to play in their home arena.

I'll concede that the Kohl Center attendence numbers get somwhat of an artificial bump, but they aren't off by that much and we'll make a run next weekend at the NCAA attendence record.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers '10-'11

I hate seeing blown late game leads, but credit the Badgers for regrouping in the shoot-out and still coming out of that game with 2 points. Must have been a wild game to be at.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers '10-'11

All right, it's Minnesota week. With a 4 game lead with 8 games left (or something like that), Badgers can virtually wrap up the regular season title with a couple of wins over the Gophers. Granted, that's not the ultimate prize, but is a nice start.

I'll probably post this more than once this week, but for those non-season ticket holders going to the game, I highly recommend buying tickets ahead of time. Even with $1 admission (or maybe because of it), there will probably be a major bottle-neck at the ticket office. I've gotten caught in this a couple of times (going with someone who didn't already have a ticket) and have missed the opening face-off more than once, which was annoying.

UW is doing a pretty good job promoting the Fill the Bowl game so I think they'll make a run at over 6,000.
