Wisconsin Badgers '10-'11

Re: Wisconsin Badgers '10-'11

hopefully they can keep the hugs and pats on the head during the game to a minimum..

I still remember a couple years back when a couple badgers and gophers went head over heels into the net, got up, hugged each other and then skated back to their benches...

Our two womens teams are unique that way, you dont see the badgers and gophers getting along very often.

Love the fact that Mark is taking part in the Gopher Chalk Talk coaches luncheon on Nov. 6, you would never see the men do that!
I heard a rumor a couple years back...that some players from these two teams were texting messages back and forth from the locker rooms between periods...texts of a friendly nature. I found that amusing.

I think Mark Johnson is the WCHA coach I'd most like to hear at a Gopher chalk talk luncheon, given my choice.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers '10-'11

Nice Sweep of Mankato. Not the prettiest of games but the girls buckled down and got the job done and that's what counts in the long run is being able to finish up against adversity..

Now lets hope they can solider on to Minnesota and see how this team can play on the road. At least its a place where the Badgers usually play well.

Are the collegians attending the US pre-4 nations camp this year? I hope not otherwise the following players are out of the mix..
Meghan Duggan
Hilary Knight
Brianna Decker
Sarah Erickson
Amanda Kessel
Anne Schleper

If the fins are camping as well then cross off Noora Räty and Mira Jalosuo as well.

Could be a rough series to watch if these players are indeed camping this week..

Forgot to ask after the game yesterday so I guess we will see as the week progresses unless someone out there knows already..

The Four Nations Collegians will play for their respective teams this weekend and join their National Teams Sunday.

Thanks for the info. While I know the havoc that Duggan, Knight, and Decker can wreak, it is nice to have the teams as close to their regular rosters as possible.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers '10-'11

Not the result I was hoping for but I really didn't foresee such an offensive explosion on either side of the rink.

Had some issues with the Video so I missed several goals but I wanted to point out a few positives that the Badgers should build on..

All of the Gopher goals (7) came from players on the first and third lines.
Badgers were 2 for 5 on the power play while only taking three penalties of their own.
Badgers took 41 shots on goal to the gophers 22.
Lines didn't panic down 4-1 and 5-2 and kept executing and it resulted in getting the puck in.

Today's a new day and its probably best that the badgers put their first road test behind them as there will be alot more tests this season.

Overall a decent weekend for the Badger women. It sucks that the rodents handed them their first loss on Friday, but it was nice to see them bounce back shut out the rodents on Saturday.
Still, I cant exactly complain about a 9-1 record.

The Badger trio of Meghan Duggan, Hilary Knight and Brianna Decker helped lead the U.S. Women’s Select Team to back-to-back wins over Canada and Finland in the team’s first two games of round-robin play at the 2010 Women's Four Nations Cup. Duggan leads Team USA with three goals so far.

Knight scored the game-winning goal in a shootout to propel the U.S. to a 3-2 win over Canada in the opening game of the tournament Tuesday night. Former Badger goaltender Jessie Vetter, who stopped all three shooters and made 32 saves in net for the victory, was named the U.S. Player of the Game.

The Wisconsin State Building Commission on Wednesday gave final approval to a multi-level, hockey and swimming competition and training facility to be constructed adjacent to the Kohl Center on the UW-Madison campus. La Bahn Arena will be named after Charles (UW-Madison '49) and Mary Ann La Bahn, the lead donors for the project.

Construction is scheduled to begin in the spring, with the facility set to open in the fall of 2012.
La Bahn Arena will be a tri-level complex that will include the following:

• 90' by 200' ice sheet for men's and women's hockey practice and women's competition, with seating for approximately 2,400 spectators

• Men's and women's hockey team locker rooms and a visiting team locker room

• Women's hockey office suite and associated support spaces

• Locker and team room functions for the men's and women's swimming programs

• A connecting skywalk to the Southeast Recreation Facility (SERF)

• Minor renovation within SERF to accommodate circulation between the pool and the swimming teams' new locker suites

• Underground connection to the Kohl Center

• Relocation of the men's basketball locker suite to space vacated by the men's hockey locker suite, expansion of training room facilities, and expansion of laundry/equipment-issue facilities to accommodate the additional occupants of the complex
Key in the creation of the facility will be bringing the Badger hockey and swimming teams to a centralized campus location for practice, competition and student services such as academics and sports medicine.

Currently the Wisconsin women's hockey program plays its home games at the Kohl Center, but the team's practice facility and locker rooms are at the Shell next to Camp Randall Stadium.

The men's hockey team currently practices at the Bob Johnson Hockey Facility adjacent to the Alliant Energy Center in Madison, but has its locker room at the Kohl Center where it plays its home
games.

Hopefully it will be an easy 4-point weekend for the lady Badgers. Robert Morris has a pretty horrible record and shouldnt pose much of a challenge.

I don't think they're gonna give you any points in the conference for wins over RM.

If GB36 was talking conference, then it would have been an easy 6-pt weekend using the new WCHA arithmetic.

And while the Badgers are likely to win, Bobby Mo did beat Providence, a team that has flirted with the top 10, and RMU has wins over UM, UMD, and UW over the last couple of seasons.

Junior Brooke Ammerman (River Vale, N.J.) recorded a hat trick and sophomore Brianna Decker (Dousman, Wis.) tallied three points to lead No. 1 Wisconsin (10-1-0, 7-1-0 WCHA) to a 7-1 win over Robert Morris (2-10-0, 1-2-0 CHA) at the RMU Island Sports Center Friday afternoon.

In addition to three-point efforts from Ammerman and Decker, junior Hilary Knight (Sun Valley, Idaho) scored two goals, and sophomore Stefanie McKeough (Carlsbad Springs, Ontario) posted two assists. Senior Meghan Duggan (Danvers, Mass.) had one goal and one assist as well.

Junior Hilary Knight (Sun Valley, Idaho) posted her second hat trick of the season as No. 1 Wisconsin (11-1-0, 7-1-0 WCHA) earned the series sweep of Robert Morris (2-11-0, 1-2-0 CHA) with a 7-1 victory at the RMU Island Sports Center Saturday afternoon.
The Badgers netted two short-handed goals for the second-straight night, and five players had a multi-point game led by Knight’s three-goal effort.

MADISON, Wis. – Wisconsin women’s hockey head coach Mark Johnson announced the signing of four student-athletes to National Letters of Intent. Katy Josephs (Calgary, Alberta), Karley Sylvester (Little Falls, Minn.), Blayre Turnbull (Stellarton, Nova Scotia) and Katarina Zgraja (Waterloo, Ontario) plan to attend the University of Wisconsin and play hockey for the Badgers beginning in the 2011-12 season.

“Overall, I think our recruits are very good students,” Johnson said. “All have had opportunities to play at a high level in their age group in the under-18 program. They’re all very skilled. When you put those things together, that’s why we are all excited about having them come in. They have the same aspirations, and they’ll be a good fit for what we’re trying to do.

“This class as a whole will be able to come in and make an immediate contribution. They’re going to have to, that’s why we’re recruiting them. They are going to be freshmen but they are going to get a chance to play and help win some games, so that should be exciting.”
The most impressive player from this signing, IMO, is Sylvester. With all the success she has had, I think she will be a great addition to the team.
Sylvester is a 5-9 forward out of Little Falls, Minn. She currently plays for coaches Derrick Comstock and David Marvin at Warroad High School and enters her senior season as a three-time varsity letterwinner. As a junior, Sylvester led the Warriors to a 28-1-1 record and the Minnesota Class A state title. A three-time all-conference honoree, Sylvester was named all-state by the Minnesota Girls Hockey Coaches Association as a sophomore and junior.

Sylvester’s international hockey experience includes participation in U.S. national development camps. As a member of the U.S. women's under-18 select team, Sylvester and Team USA swept Canada in three-games at the 2010 Women's Under-18 Series in Lake Placid, N.Y. Sylvester scored the game-winning goal in overtime to give the U.S. a 3-2 win in game two of the series.

Johnson on Sylvester:
“Karley is a left-handed forward. She has shown she can score goals, a good skater, very fundamentally sound. I think she has a lot of upside. Although she’s part of our under-18 team and has already shown signs of being a very good player up to this point, we’re excited because we think there’s a lot of upside left in her.”

I don't know anything about the other three recruits mentioned in the release, but Miss Sylvester will definitely be a great addition to the Badgers. I experience a slight feeling of dread when I envision her in Cardinal & White for four years. Seriously, a good get by MJ.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers '10-'11

I had the distinct pleasure of attending my second UW women's game Friday with my 2 sons and 2 of their friends. Again I am impressed with the quality of play in the women's game. Excellent hockey. A very interesting game. Great comeback win. I was nice to see an overtime win for once, especailly against UMD. UW seemed rather undisciplined with the slashing penalties. The greatest part of being at the game was we neded up being the cheerleading section of the crowd. We fired up the "Let's go Badgers" chant in the first period and I was suprised how many people followed suit. We were at an RPI game earlier in the year and no one followed suit on the cheering. As the kids I had along gained confidence in being boisterious, they tried cheers without me egging them on. Too bad the crowd overall just doesn't seem to be that into the games, or at least willing to cheer. We're definately doing the fill the bowl game against the rodents - I'm filling my van for that one.

I have a few questions....

It seems to me the UW players tend to try and beat opponents one on one quite a bit with stick handling vs passing the puck to the open player. Is this typical of UW?

UW played a pretty passive forcheck, not really putting pressure on UMD's d once they got control of the puck. Is this typical or non-typical because UMD has some great players on the team and Johnson was being conservative?

Stick it to the Dawgs today gals.

Let's go RED!!!!!!!!

Re: Wisconsin Badgers '10-'11

The womens' program needs more of the mens' fans to come over and check out the action. While Wisconsin leads the nation in attendence, it seems like there is potential for much larger crowds. One thing that would really help the atmosphere at the game would be some kind of band at every game. It's so much better than the piped in music that I've been subjected to most of the season. I haven't been at all the home games this year, but I don't think the band has been there for more than one or two games at most. That's unacceptable for the #1 team in the country and is a complaint I've had for several years.

Another thing that would help would be any sign of a student section. Combine the band with even 50 or so students and I think the overall crowd would be rowdier.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers '10-'11

The Bulldogs continue to be tricky for the Badgers. Wasn't able to see the game today, but a couple of things stuck out from the box score. First, UMD out-shot the Badgers and got off around 70 shots for the weekend. That's a lot more than they normally give up. Also, UMD wasn't called for any penalties. Zero. Again, wasn't at the game, but that had to be a point of contention for Johnson.

With that said, the game on Friday was a blast to be at. After a slow first period, they dominated the second period but could only put one past Martin. Fairly even third and seemed like UMD was going to get the win. But it was hard work and a pretty top-shelf goal to tie it up and the game-winner was a thing of beauty by Knight and Decker. The mens' team could learn a thing or two from them about winning in OT.

Bottom line is that we are tied for the conference lead with two games in hand. Big series next weekend against the Sioux.

The penalties weren't much. The one tripping penalty was just a lazy trip that the whole arena saw. The other two could've been ignored for all anyone cared. I'm not sure Johnson would be too upset. Bottom line is they let the teams play hockey.

The Badgers seemed unable for some reason to get much going after that early first goal. UMD's defense was consistently good today and of course Kim Martin was on her game, too. But after about the midway point of the first period, the Bulldogs seemed to get some mojo going and then building on it for the rest of the game.

Lots of quality shots both ways, good goaltending and a really entertaining series. Can't wait for the late January rematch at the new Amsoil Arena in Duluth!
