Wisconsin Badgers '10-'11

Re: Wisconsin Badgers '10-'11

I kind of think the deciding factor will be his family. With the two kids still in school, he may want to give them the stability that Madison provides. He certainly spoke of that when he initially stayed here to coach the Women's team, and I'm hoping like crazy that it still applies.

Sports Illustrated in their hockey notes column indicated that Mike Eaves is primed to be an NHL coach next season for some team. If he indeed does leave, would they give the job to Johnson? I remember reading in the "Miracle" book that Johnson badly wanted the men's job which was given to Eaves and settled for the women's post. Seems like he has basically done all he can for the Wisconsin women. If he leaves, what openings would interest him?

I don't think the UW would just "give" him the men's job, but he would be the heavy favorite and I have to believe Coach Johnson would accept if offered. He has virtually done everything possible during his time as women's coach. I'm curious if he would want another shot at Olympic gold. That wouldn't be possible if he takes a men's job.

Right. I should have used the word "offered". I'm curious too if he would want another shot at gold. Who would replace him as the women's coach should the administration offer him the men's job if Eaves is offered a pro job and decides to leave? Who would they look at?

Re: Wisconsin Badgers '10-'11

I prefer Bob, but if you like Scott, that's ok too. ;) Hey, at least I got the nationality right. :D

No, you didn't get the nationality right. She's Canadian. You're probably thinking of the word, "ethnicity" which clearly is above you given the nature of your comment. Please remove your statement. You're ignorance is not a reflection of the great Wisconsin fans I have met nor that I have shared time with when I cheer for my home state's teams. The fact that you promote your Christian church on your signuature is interesting. I wonder what a good Christian would say about your insinuation in your comment.

I would encourage readers to "report" TimothyA'S post by clicking on the triangle with the "!" in the middle underneath the user name/ info.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers '10-'11

Yes, I meant ethnicity. What is wrong with recognizing someone's ethnicity? I have a very German last name, if you called me a German-American UW hockey fan, I'd be proud. Some folks sure are implying alot and casting a ton of judgement from a single mistaken name and single wrong word use. I apologize for the mistake of using "nationality" instead of "ethnicity".

It seems the "Women's Hockey" posters are a tad more sensitive than the Men's. Over on the men's side, Poles get abused all the time. ;)

MJ would certainly be a candidate for the Men's job but would be far from the favorite.

I find this interesting. Knowing that you're far more familiar with the inside poop on these things, why is he far from the favorite? I would have thought that if it was open, and assuming he wanted it, it'd be darned near impossible to say no to him twice. I'd sure hate to be the one to have to do it.

Theres a few different reasons.

1. At the end of his tenure as an asisstant for the men's program, recruiting went in the tank and he was in charge of that. When he took over for Kemp recruiting went down hill. Had it not been for a legacy like Heatley, the program might have fallen off the map all together.
2. He's been in the womens game for a long time and despite having contacts in the men's game it's not that easy to just jump in and start recruiting again. Established coaching options are already on the men's side right now who have been recruiting for the past however many years.
3. Wisconsin has a pleathora of options available. In college alone head coaches Mark Osiecki from Ohio State and George Gwozdecky from Denver would be prime candidates to return to their alma matters. GG didn't want the job when it last became available but since then he has been flirting with a lot of jobs, including Penn State. You also could maybe snag a guy like Tony Granato away from the Penguins, or John Hynes, or Don Granato, all who have strong ties to the program.

That's not to mention other elite coaching options from around the country who have pretty good jobs but might be looking to go to a huge Big 10 power like Enrico Blasi from Miami, or Jeff Jackson at Notre Dame.

I love what Mark Johnson has done for the womens program, but I'm just not sold that he's the guy if Eaves were to ever leave.

These are reasons why I think he would not take the Penn St. job. And these are reason why Penn St. should look very closely and objectively at him, especially the recruiting. Recruiting did go down hill when he was in charge, and in the men's game, now starting from scratch, he would struggle I think. The men's recruiting landscape is far more competitive than it was 10 yrs ago when he was in the thick of it.

Which brings me to women's recruiting....what is the key for Johnson landing all these great women's players? Is it now his/UW's reputation? I saw an application form online, is his in box just full of these and he gets the pick of the litter? Or is he/an assistant going out and beating the bushes looking for these gals?

Thanks for the info. While I feel kind of forced to acknowledge the truth in what you say, I still think I'd rather open a vein than say no to Mark again. Makes me glad I was just a worker bee in the UW system and not an athletic director, I guess. Although the AD's salary would have been a distinct improvement.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers '10-'11

Coach Mark Johnson was with John and Tammy on the radio this morning.

Here's the two part interview.

In Part 1 he talks about coaching girls (tough love), recruiting, and winning championships.

In Part 2 he talks about whats left for him in coaching (how each year is a new process), the 80 Olympics, Miracle, being a dad, and having a gold medal.

Sounds like hes pretty happy with life here and already looking at next year with the girls...

Re: Wisconsin Badgers '10-'11

My wife came home from work today and said she'd heard (on the radio, I think) that PBS 2, the Wisconsin Channel, was going to broadcast the Women's championship game a couple of times so the fans could actually see it. However, I just looked online through next Wednesday and I don't see it listed at all. Anybody else hear anything about this? It'd be a chance for some of us to record it, although I presume it'll be available from the NCAA at some point. Thanks for any help.

Carter: I think this is what your looking for.
