Wisconsin Badgers '10-'11

Re: Wisconsin Badgers '10-'11

Seems to me that ESPNU and CBS College Sports are ideal for these events, especially for the championship game.

Pretty tight game after one period. Wisconsin definitely had more scoring opportunities, but BU looks to be a very good defensive team and Sperry is the real deal. First goal is going to be big.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers '10-'11

Should be about 5-1 Badgers at this point. Great saves by Sperry and a friendly post/crossbar are keeping BU in the game. Wisconsin pretty much controlled the 2nd period and put heavy pressure throughout. Prevost is playing out of her mind.

With that said, the late goal by Poulin changed some of the momentum and has to give the Terriers hope going into the third. Like I said against BC at the second intermission, I'm not sure 2 goals will stand up. Need to keep pounding the net and get a couple of more. Going to be a fun last period.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers '10-'11

Congratulations to Wisconsin on a well deserved national championship. There is no question the Badgers were the best in the land this year.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers '10-'11

I second the congratulations to everyone in the program in bringing home their 4th national title. Badgers played a great game and left no doubt who was #1.

On Wisconsin!

Congrats, they work hard and had the best team. NATIONAL CHAMPS once again.

Who is # 2

Re: Wisconsin Badgers '10-'11

I have to ditto D2D...he said it all....Wisco is a fine team, very disciplined and great skaters....they move the puck asap, and are always in support of the puck...BU made a stupid line change for the 3rd goal but that wasn't the difference....just superior play by Wisconsin.....at least here in my living room, I don't have to hear "When you've said blah, blah blah blah blah, you've said it all"....Congrats Bagders and your fans!

Re: Wisconsin Badgers '10-'11

My congratulations as well. I do think this Frozen Four demonstrated that the East is catching up to the West, and that's all to the good for women's hockey. I'm really looking forward to next year, and I really hope we'll have Mark Johnson back and running the show. He is absolutely unparalleled.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers '10-'11

UW played a great 2 games. The 3 goals they gave up were all on great individual plays and/or one on one breakdowns. Inside the D zone they were rock solid. Rigsby was a machine. Too bad a few more of those post shots didn't go in, I would have liked to really crushed BU on the scoreboard because UW did dominate the game. It was really cool that literally 5 minutes after the game ended there was Championship gear in Bucky's Lockeroom online.

So where does a curious fan go for recruiting info for the UW women's team?

First off all congratulations to the Wisconsin Badgers. Clearly deserving champs.

Couple of responses to your comments:

1 - Disagree on the "Too Bad a few more of those posts" did not go in. While Wisco dominated, specially in the second period, the fact this was a close game on the score board was better for womens hockey overall. Blowouts of a 5-0 type proportion like the one a few years ago, do little to promote the game as a whole.

2 - "Rigsby was a machine". Sure she made some good saves, but compared to both Sperry and Schaus she had little work. Schaus was clearly the best goaler in the final four, and IMHO Sperry no two.

Looking over the rosters it is clear that, while both finalists lose a few key players, they are both returning a lot of key players. Expect both of them to be serious contenders again next year.

I'm going to take up a bit for my fellow Badger fan on this. I would have like to traded in one or two of those post shots for the empty netter. A 5-1 result would have shown even better how well Wisconsin played. I thought the quality of hockey overall was very good over the weekend. What would do a lot more for women's hockey would be getting the Frozen Four on TV no matter how obscure the channel might be.

As far as the "Rigsby is a machine" quote, that's different than saying Rigsby was the best goalie of the weekend. Schaus and Sperry had to stand on their heads to keep their teams in the game. We'll never know how Rigsby would have done in the same situation. She played very well in both games and 2 of the 3 goals against were on great individual plays that were probably going to beat anyone in net.

Congrats to the Badgers on another championship season! Thanks for keeping the trophy in the WCHA!!!

1. I really don't care too much about promoting the women's game overall, I want UW to stomp all opponents like there is no tomorrow. UW's dominate season would have been better represented by a blowout.

2. Rigsby was a machine, it took 3 awesome plays to beat her. Against UMD a rebound went right to Chow 3 ft out and she hammered it home, nothing she could do with that. I am taking nothing away from the Boston 2some, they played great as well, and were more tested, but if Rigsby is a lesser goalie, UW loses against BC or maybe even UMD.

Mark Johnson.....From reading various interviews of him, I think the odds are 50-50 on whether he stays or goes. It comes down to does he want a new challange or does he want to try and maintain UW program in the face of improving eastern opponents? I think he goes.

I kind of think the deciding factor will be his family. With the two kids still in school, he may want to give them the stability that Madison provides. He certainly spoke of that when he initially stayed here to coach the Women's team, and I'm hoping like crazy that it still applies.
