Wisconsin Badgers '10-'11

Re: Wisconsin Badgers '10-'11

A solid (and physical) win over the Sioux wraps up the home regular season schedule for the Badgers. Nice pre-game ceremony for the seniors and post-game presentation for the regular season WCHA title. Assuming the seeds hold, these two will probably meet up again in the WCHA semis.

Crowd was announced at over 3,700 which seemed fairly accurate, though I was expecting more.

Brittany Ammerman looked to get banged up badly (either knee, foot and/or ankle). Hopefully nothing was broken and can just take a week or two off before the meat of the playoffs, though that may be optimistic.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers '10-'11

You've had three major discounts -- the Fill-the-Bowl game, the first $1 stub men's basketball game (a Sunday v. St. Cloud), and this game.

Fill-the-Bowl got 10,668. The first $1 game got 3,854. This game got 3,783. The average attendance in other games is about 2,200.

Still a 70% improvement from the average game, and only 2% loss relative to the first $1 game. I'd happily take those numbers. I'd have expected the numbers from yet another $1 game to decline a bit.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers '10-'11

I wasn't expecting a radically bigger crowd, but considering the promotions, the opponent, no other competing events and carryover from Fill the Bowl, yeah I thought over 4,000 was doable.

I guess I have higher expectations of what's possible from an attendence stand-point. If Badger volleyball and women's basketball were as relatively as good as the hockey team, they would be seeing consistent crowds of over 7,000 and 10,000 respectively.

Even with no special promotions, $5/adult and $2 kids/student/seniors (and free surrounding parking) for Wisconsin Women's hockey is one of the best entertainment values in town.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers '10-'11

The one thing from the Fill the Bowl game that really stood out to me is that there was actually a large student population. The student end had people all the way up into the 3rd deck! Even in the other big attendance games I've been to (Team USA and Harvard/4OT) I don't remember ever seeing close to that many students.

Its disappointing that that hasn't carried over at all. The past weekend there were the handful of regular students who made it out, but that's it.

I'm also disappointed that the band simply isn't a part of womens games at the Kohl anymore. I first started going to the games in 06 and for the first couple years it was typical to see the band there unless there was another big event going on. Now, there's never a band, and even the group that did show up for Fill the Bowl was small and seemed to leave early.

Its hard to complain when you're getting 3000+ people out to watch womens hockey, but getting more students excited about the games and getting the band back to improve the overall fan experience would be two pretty easy steps to keep crowds up.

That's your cue WHKY blogger.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers '10-'11

clearly I should have read the entire thread, rather than just the last 3 or 4 pages! :D

Hey, I'm just glad there's someone else taking up taking up the cause. Just surprised that there's not a more consistent turnout of students (even 50-100 all together in one area). Can't say it's too expensive or the team isn't good enough.

If you read the quotes from many of the players after Fill the Bowl, they were clearly energized by the big crowd, student section and band. Too bad it's still the exception rather than the rule.

Most people have enough interest for 1 womens' hockey game per year and when it comes to picking that game, Minnesota will always trump NoDak. Badger womens' hockey is a great entertainment value, but at the end of the day its still womens' hockey, which there just isnt a whole lot of interest in.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers '10-'11

Fairly easy 4-0 win tonight which is ok by me with the lines switched around a bit..

Different seeing Prough up front again, I really like her better as a D given her style of play. When she is up front there is always something missing everytime the play goes the other way.

No word on when Nash (Concussion), Brit. Ammerman (Sprained ACL), and Brooke Ammerman (undisclosed) will return to the lineup. I dont believe any of the three made the trip as Laurel Miller, Derya Kelter, and Lauren Unser were all in the lineup on the fourth line. Natalie Berg played with Haverstock on Defense as well. Liked the Jaminski-Knight-Packer line that brought energy to the ice. Maddy has shown no sings of slowing down after the rough injury she had a few weeks back.

Hopefully the girls can find a way to stay interested with the game tomorrow and next weekend against st. cloud so they roll into Minneapolis refreshed and ready to bring home more hardware..

Nice update on the injury situation. I looked at the box score and thought they were missing several players. At this point (and next weekend), I think staying healthy for the WCHA/NCAA tournament is key. Fortunately, that's an advantage of the Badgers having depth. That Jaminski-Knight-Packer has to be one of the biggest/toughest line in the country.

From talking with a few of the girls this week Nash is touch and go and could be back next week or could be out the rest of the year... Brit Ammerman should be back for the Final Faceoff in two weeks and by the NCAA Regional at the latest or so I am told. No idea on her sister Brooke.. She looked fine the other day off the ice..

Re: Wisconsin Badgers '10-'11

Hope Iam wrong but I know a major injury when I see one. Looks like a major injury for Madison Packer near the end of the second today in Bemidji. Both trainers were out working on her for a few minutes before she was carried off the ice. Not good. Hope its all precautionary and she can come back soon..

Good to read of Packer being back on the ice quickly.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers '10-'11

That would really suck if Nash has to miss the rest of the year being a senior...and being a good player. Must not have been a complete tear of the ACL for Bri. Ammerman, which is really fortunate. That's strange with Brooke. Hope it's nothing significant.

The only positive (such as it is) is that the likes of Unser, Miller, etc. get to see some more ice time. Is Jaminski's move to forward a permanent one?

I can't believe that the attendence was under 100. Even St. Cloud was drawing crowds around 400-500.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers '10-'11

Happens nearly everytime we play out there.. Sad but true..

When I spoke to an Athletic Department Staffer earlier in the year about the potential for playing out at the nest again I was told it was for sure going to be there because none of the other rinks in town are interested or availible for this weekend. If the Eagles Nest were to become unavailible then the Badgers backup locations are the Janesville Ice Center (aprox. 1 hour south of madison) or the Ozaukee Ice Center in Mequon (aprox. 2 hours north east of madison). Both buildings seat under 1,000 as well.

The Janesville Ice Center isnt 1 hour south of Madison, its 40 minutes max. I grew up in Edgerton, which is about 12 miles north of Janesville. You are right though that the JIA isnt a huge arena. Its got a nice rink but its the home of the Janesville Jets, which doesnt exactly have a huge fanbase.
