Wisconsin Badgers '10-'11

Re: Wisconsin Badgers '10-'11

Any reason why they couldn't play at the Dane County Coliseum? Seats around 8,000 and could crank up the beer garden.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers '10-'11

Maybe it's not as big of a deal with La Bahn Arena right around the corner, but it would be kind of cool to be out at the Coliseum for the playoffs next near. Speaking of La Bahn, will the 2,400 seating capacity be enough to host either the WCHA Women's Final Four and/or NCAA Women's Final Four? If not, again I'd like to see the Coliseum in the mix assuming that Kohl Center will never be available for both. I just think it's a shame that Madison hasn't hosted either considering the success of the program.

I'd say definitely for the WCHA tournament. It's small for the NCAA, but if nobody bids (and I'm guessing that Madison doesn't) the NCAA can't keep going to Duluth and Minneapolis tiime after time. Bemidji is the other new destination in the WCHA that would be worth a try, although the location would not be as good as Madison. Grand Forks would work well beyond the expensive flight for Right Coast folk, if they come to an agreement with the NCAA over the bazillion Sioux logos.

Labahn is supposed to be ready in the fall of 2012 so after next year it should not be an issue...

While the arena is a bit small for an NCAA bid (and to this point the department has not bid due to conflicts with WIAA tournaments) it would make for a great WCHA Final Faceoff site. The biggest obstical for that is the fact that the arena will only have one visitors locker room with showers. The other "Tournament" locker rooms are basicially designed as storage areas that can in a pinch be used as locker rooms. To save money in the project many of the amenities that would have made this place a killer stronghold for smaller tournaments and host for non-UW events were cut from the project.

The Giouxn logos will be gone after this year.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers '10-'11

And even if they did want to get rid of them, the logo is everywhere one looks in the Ralph, including places where it would not be easily removed.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers '10-'11

Arm is right. It is inlaid in the concourse floor...(beautifully, I might add).

Id be surprised if it stays, especially considering all of the drama, politicts and red tape that surrounds the whole issue. Its never a good thing when politicians get involved.

Agreed that they have hurdles to overcome, but to be honest all things being equal I'd rather have elected politicians involved as opposed to an unelected bureaucracy making the decisions with no checks and balances...That way if you don't like what they do you can vote to throw the bums out! I suspect that ultimately this will end up in federal court.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers '10-'11

Sorry I did not mean to hijack the Badgers' thread. No more from me here on the Fighting Sioux nickname issue.

I am not a lawyer but it just seems logical that a battle is brewing between those who govern North Dakota (assuming their Senate and Governor support the decisive vote in their House of Representatives) and the NCAA. The NCAA is of course is a national governing body, and with Native Americans' (Sioux tribes) wishes very much in the thick of things I would think this whole mess would transcend the jurisdiction of any one state. Again I am not a lawyer and I could be wrong...

Also from the floor of the North Dakota House of Representatives:

Donnell Preskey has more from the floor debate.

(Carlson) "Is this a fight? You bet it is..." North Dakota House members decide they want to fight for the Fighting Sioux name..

(Carlson) "The people, the ones we work for want the name, they want the Fighting Sioux name to stay... By 65-28 Representatives approved a bill that says UND must keep the Fighting Sioux logo and nickname..

(Schatz) "And when the Fighting Sioux take the ice, if that doesn't give you a thrill, then that's too bad. If you want to turn it into the flying chipmunks, that's your business. I don't and neither do thousands and thousands of ND's. (Carlson) "This bill is about the process of changing the name. I'm insulted when someone tells me we have no legislative authority to talk about this issue." (Schatz) "The Florida Seminoles, The Utah Utes, these are some names the NCAA allows. We will not be censored by a group of collegiate hypocrites who sit on their tenure and tell us what to think."

Re: Wisconsin Badgers '10-'11

Ok, I'm not saying this isn't a valid and interesting debate, but it's time to reclaim this thread back to Wisconsin Womens Hockey. Are there any status updates on Nash and the Ammerman sisters? There's probably no reason to rush anyone back against St. Cloud. Also, any word if they'll again split Rigsby & Ruegsegger?

Freshman forward Madison Packer (Birmingham, Mich.) was named the Western Collegiate Hockey Association Rookie of the Week for Feb. 23 after earning her first career hat trick as the Badgers topped Minnesota State, 9-1, last Saturday.

On the weekend, Packer finished the series with 12 shots and had a +2 rating. She now has seven multi-point games on the year, including three of the last four. Packer’s hat trick came one week after she recorded a career series-high four assists.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers '10-'11

CollegeHockeyStats shows the game as as sellout at something like 817 in attendance. I know I'd be downright ****ed off about the circumstances of playing a playoff game at this venue if I were a Badger fan and couldn't get in.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers '10-'11

Unfortunately, this has been reality for the first round of the WCHA playoffs for a long time. Kohl Center is busy will the state wrestling tournaments and the Coliseum probably doesn't want to host the games. The hard-core fans know to get their tickets during the week as sellouts are inevitable with the small size of the Eagles Nest.

Back in 2006, Wisconsin had to host their NCAA quarterfinal game against Mercyhurst way off campus in another smaller rink that didn't seat much more than 1,000. Fortunately, they have been able to play the their last two quarterfinal games at Kohl and should be able to do so again this year.

Well, the UW did send out letters to donars stating that if they wanted playoff tickets that they should order them early because they would be in short supply. Also, anyone who is a serious fan of Badgers hockey knows that the first round is usually at smaller venues, so you need to get your tickets early.
I think it kind of sucks too, but its a problem that will be solved once they complete the Kohl Center addition and build the ladies their own rink.

Talked to a couple of the workers last night and their impression is the new building may not be the salvation we are hoping for due to the aforementioned Wrestling. They may still play at the Nest due to the congestion and rescources needed for Hockey that will be taken up by the WIAA Wrestling event downtown.

I do have to say that the Nest, while crappy and barely able to support two teams, does have a nice atmosphere for playoff hockey.... (if theres anything good that comes from playing there)

Except that despite an early notification, with supply that limited due to venue many are still left out in the cold, I would guess.

To my dismay...it would have been more room than needed for the "crowd" at Ridder last night.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers '10-'11

I don't mean to put the cart before the horse, but how much do the ncaa first round tickets cost? Is the KC the site?
