Winter 2015 - boom or snow job?

its easy to get arrogant about handling snow when you think of Michigan Tech, where we have already had 200 inches and more to come. but then again we have the tools for handling it.
I feel for Boston.

And you also have the space. If things weren't so cramped, it may not be as bad. And I'm thinking you didn't get the 200" over the course of 17 days. If we got this amount of snow from December though all of February it would be easier to take but this onslaught has been incredible.

true. we build with snow removal in mind. our driveway, which is half a mile long was put in with open areas by the sides to push the snow into. we have lots ready to dump snow that is collected from the streets. and our winters are long, like November - April long. although I do remember a story that Bumbletown got 53 inches three weekends in a row. do you have buildings collapsing under the weight of snow and ice? even we get that occasionally, but most buildings are built with snow loads in mind. when we built our house, I told the builder, I don't ever want to shovel the roof off. did enough of that as a young adult. our biggest winter was 399 inches. (luckily I didn't live up there then) you could walk outside from second story windows.

Re: Winter 2015 - boom or snow job?

Yes, that's been an issue the last few weeks. They've been making a big push on the news to have people clear off their roofs. A school was closed this week because they noticed some weakening of the roof. It's school vacation week next week so they didn't reopen after Monday's storm to take the time to fix it. The other issue we didn't have with the last two big storms that we're having with this one is the winds and the high tides which will lead to coastal flooding. Houses were destroyed with the first blizzard. More will probably be damaged with this one.

Re: Winter 2015 - boom or snow job?

It was snowing here at 12:50 but it has stopped now...so I guess the blizzardcane missed us. Phew, that sounded bad.

Re: Winter 2015 - boom or snow job?

There was a good size accident on southbound US-31 today in Muskegon. And rubbernecking caused an equal accident on the northbound side.

It has, in fact, missed us. Snowfall totals have been cranked way, way down. My area was forecast for 24" of snow, we are now forecast for 9". Which, as I recall, was about what they originally predicted back on Tuesday and Wednesday. Even on Thursday our local weather forecaster, who has been doing weather on the NBC affiliate here 30 years, laughed off Al Roker's doom and gloom blizzard talk on Thursday. He's going to come back from vacation strutting like a peacock. He predicted 4" which is going to be about what most of the viewership in Maine will see.

Hey we got 2 inches here, 10% of their original forecast is pretty good. Its all click bait. Predict the worst so everyone keeps clicking on your page to see the latest prediction of death by snow

Re: Winter 2015 - boom or snow job?

Priceless, Walrus, where are you two located again? I didn't think I was too far from you... We have 16" so far and still coming down.

Re: Winter 2015 - boom or snow job?

TV reporters are getting punch drunk. Just heard one say "The wind is blowing sideways". We know what she meant. Right now, things aren't too bad, as long as we don't lose power. Cleanup will be a ***** though. It'll mean trying to move snow in very low wind chills into the wind, with no place to put it.

Re: Winter 2015 - boom or snow job?

I can't even tell how much we've received here because of the wind. Maybe it's just the timing of this latest storm but looking outside it looks like the worst one of the four. Really really windy and heavy snow and very low visibility.

I'm just south of Bangor, we got diddly squat. Huge dry slot over mid coastal Maine, snowed hard in York county Maine, Portland area got very little and then you have to get Downeast to get it again. I guess Machias, Eastport, New Brunswick are getting buried.

They are predicting storms that haven't even formed yet and when they form 100 miles further east they look like idiots. I'm shocked they aren't calling for a state of emergency for Weds. storm yet. Gotta keep those folks clicking your stations link to keep up with it

Boston has received more snow in three weeks than Chicago has ever gotten in an entire winter. And there are storms on the way for Tuesday and Thursday.

Big bust. Not sue what the official total is, and it is hard to tell with all the drifting, but it seems like we got maybe 10 inches in Bar Harbor.

Re: Winter 2015 - boom or snow job?

Doesn't appear that Boston is getting anything on Thursday:

WCVB

WBZ

Where did you see there was a Thursday storm? Or are you talking up in Maine?

Re: Winter 2015 - boom or snow job?

DC is slated for some white stuff Monday night - Tuesday AM. 5" will shut down your government for a day or so.

So relax, kick back you're recliner and watch the hysterical news shows.

Or maybe you get Jim Cantore scream "THUNDERSNOW!" on your front lawn? Ahhh the thrill of ratings!

The Weather Channel said there was something possible for Thursday if conditions are right. They are saying the storm Tuesday will form where this one did, which means it will form where this one was supposed to and we're all going to get buried on Tuesday night...
